BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down after an opening bell surge led by Walmart, IBM and Nvidia.  The Dow fell 4 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was off by 6 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was down almost 9 tenths.  Gold plunged another $37.40 on the Comex, trading at $4,045.40 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 28 cents at $59.16 a barrel.

Nvidia reported another quarter of soaring profits.  The chipmaker’s quarterly report caused its stock to gain as much as 5% in early trading.  But that fizzled as it and other stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined over AI stock valuation worries and the increasing likelihood that the Fed won’t lower interest rates next month. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/19/stock-market-today-live-updates.html

Today’s jobs report from the Labor Department shows the economy added an unexpectedly high 119k jobs in September with the unemployment rate remaining at 4.3%.  But the August gain of 22k jobs was revised to a loss of 4k, and July’s gains were lowered by 7k.  Despite September’s strong numbers, this year is still on pace for the weakest annual employment growth since the pandemic and second-weakest since the Great Recession.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/20/economy/us-jobs-report-september-final

U.S. imports fell by about 5% in August, mainly due to tariffs.  That helped cut the U.S. trade deficit by nearly 24% in August.  But the overall trade deficit is still up 25% year-to-date to $713.6b.  Voter dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living caused the President to drop added tariffs on many food staples last week. The August trade data and September unemployment numbers are only now becoming available because of the 43-day government shutdown. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/u-s-trade-deficit-dropped-nearly-24-in-august-as-trumps-tariffs-reduce-imports

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers is stepping down from the board of OpenAI and going on leave from teaching at Harvard after documents released by Congress showed him corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein. https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/larry-summers-resigns-openai-board-jeffrey-epstein-emails-rcna244766

Home sales in Southern California are at a 3-year high as interest rates fall.  Nationwide, existing home sales were up 1.7% in October compared with a year ago.  The median price was up 2.1%.  There had been some talk of a developing buyers’ market with a growing average age of listings since the interest rate average is now about 3 tenths of a percent lower than when those numbers were collected.  But inventory is beginning to drop.  And that’s why prices are still going up. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/20/october-existing-home-sales-supply.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

On your mark, get set, shop!  Amazon’s Black Friday sale starts today.

Billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer yesterday announced his candidacy to replace Gavin Newsom as governor of California.  Newsom has already served the maximum number of terms allowed for the office.  Steyer enters a crowded field of Democratic contenders.  He’d previously attempted to run for President and joined an effort to impeach Donald Trump during his first administration.  Steyer will run for governor with a focus on addressing California’s affordability problem.  His platform includes lowering electric bills, building a million new homes in four years, making pre-school and community college free, and banning corporate political action committee money from state elections.  Other Democratic candidates include: former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, former Rep. Katie Porter, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, California Democratic Party Vice Chair Betty Yee, and former California Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon.  The two main Republican candidates are former Fox News commentator Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. https://www.kcra.com/article/tom-steyer-2026-california-governor-campaign-race/69483967

FEMA’s acting chief, David Richardson resigned Monday after 6 months on the job.  He said he’d agreed to be acting administrator during hurricane season, which ended November 1.  Now he wants to return to private industry.  During Richardson’s tenure, he’d been heavily criticized for slow response to catastrophic floods in Texas Hill Country that killed more than 130 people of July 4.  He’ll be replaced by current FEMA chief of staff, Karen Evans beginning December 1.  https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/acting-fema-head-resigns-rcna244433
