LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
If you traveled the 5 freeway through Camp Pendleton Saturday afternoon, you probably wish you hadn’t. A high-speed pursuit that began in Buena Park ended with barriers blocking all lanes of the freeway in both directions. Shots erupted and a K-9 was deployed when the suspect bailed from his vehicle. The suspect was arrested and no officers were injured. But many people were stuck on the freeway for up to five hours. Some ran out of gas. Even those who were able to detour added hours to their trips with traffic much heavier and slower than usual on the 15 freeway. Social media lit up all day with tales of the unplanned freeway adventure. Crews finally cleared the scene and the freeway fully reopened late Saturday evening. https://www.newsbreak.com/everyday-states-316335350/4362789700577-i-5-nightmare-wild-chase-turns-deadly-near-camp-pendleton-stranding-drivers-for-hours

Authorities are searching for an inmate who walked away from La Cima Conservation Camp in Julian sometime last night. 28-year old Joseph Lee Randall was first missed during a routine head count at 3:15a. He’s 5 foot 7 and weighs about 209 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a state issue orange T-shirt, gray sweatpants and either black boots or white tennis shoes. Anyone with knowledge of Randall should call 9-1-1 or local law enforcement. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/inmate-walks-away-conservation-camp-san-diego-county
Emergency Room visits are expected to rise right after the Thanksgiving holiday due to a trio of respiratory illnesses. One is a mutation of the common flu that doesn’t appear to respond to this year’s flu shot. Covid-19 and RSV typically become more common during the holidays. Even though it won’t help with the H3N2 subclade K strain, officials are urging people to get updated flu, RSV and Covid shots. https://patch.com/california/temecula/trio-illnesses-new-flu-mutation-concerns-experts-what-know-ca

In Major League Baseball – Managers have been fired for a lot less. But even after a historically bad 119 losses in the 2025 season the Colorado Rockies are sticking with last season’s interim manager Warren Schaeffer. He’d been promoted from third-base coach on May 11 after the team started the season 7 and 33. Things didn’t get much better. But with a decade of service to the Rockies, Schaeffer will become the team’s eighth full-time manager in 2026. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47086322/rockies-retain-manager-warren-schaeffer-119-loss-season

Kohl’s has picked a new CEO – its third one in as many years as the chain’s sales decline. Michael Bender replaces Ashley Buchanan who was fired just a few months into his tenure. Bender has been on the board of Kohl’s since 2019 and has been acting CEO since May. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/24/kohls-picks-new-ceo-after-a-turbulent-year-and-sales-declines.html
The average tuition for both public and private four-year colleges has about doubled over the last 30 years – and that’s after adjustments for inflation. In 1970, tuition at Harvard was $2,400 a year. That’s $21k when adjusted for inflation. The actual tuition for next year will be $59k. Add in food and housing and it’s more like $86k per year. The only real bargain left is in-state tuition at public universities. It has also doubled, but has leveled off and even declined a bit since the pandemic thanks to increases in government funding. In-state students are also subsidized by those attending from out of state. Experts say rising costs, competition and certain amount of administrative bloat are some of the reasons for galloping tuition increases. But the tuition market is very opaque. Some families pay one thing, others pay a different price even though both are supposedly paying full price, making it hard to price shop for a college. Seems that the more you pay, the more prestigious your school is assumed to be. There have been efforts in Congress to standardize financial aid letter, to better allow comparisons between schools. The Trump administration has suggested freezing tuition. Purdue for one froze undergraduate tuition at $9k a year for in-state and $28k for out of state twelve years ago. That freeze is still in effect. The school’s treasurer says tuition revenue is up even without raising prices. In California, the biggest bargain is still going to a 2-year community college, then transferring to a Cal State or UC school to finish your four-year degree. https://www.npr.org/2025/11/20/nx-s1-5600854/college-costs-have-risen-dramatically-in-the-last-20-years-heres-why

Reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff has died of pneumonia brought on following a seizure. The Jamaican musician and actor was known for hits including “Many Rivers to Cross”, “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and the title track from the 1972 crime film, “The Harder They Come”. His first hit in his home country was “Hurricane Hattie” which referred to a 1961 storm that wreaked havoc throughout the Caribbean. He was a Jamaican representative singing at the 1964 New York World’s Fair when a producer signed him to the Island label and persuaded him to move to England. Cliff always said he “grew up economically poor, spiritually rich.” In 2010 he became the second reggae artist, after Bob Marley, to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Two years later, nearing the age of 70 his “Rebirth” album won the Grammy for best reggae album. Jimmy Cliff was 81. https://www.npr.org/2025/11/24/nx-s1-4526570/jimmy-cliff-obituary-reggae
