Three immigrants detained multiple times by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in San Diego County have filed a proposed class action lawsuit accusing the Department of Homeland Security of violation of due process rights. The plaintiffs say they were released by Homeland Security after it was determined they were not flight risks or a danger to the community, but then detained again when appearing for “check-in” appointments at downtown San Diego ICE offices. An attorney for the case says “We will not stand by as the administration continues to lay arrest traps for immigrants doing exactly what the government has asked of them …”. https://thecoastnews.com/lawsuit-alleges-ice-detaining-immigrants-without-due-process-in-san-diego-county/

After a record-setting Black Friday, today is Cyber Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year. Initial sales figures will make headlines tomorrow along with earnings reports this week from major retailers including American Eagle, Dollar Tree, Five Below, Macy’s, Kroger, Ulta and Dollar General. www.morningbrew.com
Consumer Reports and other consumer advocates are warning consumers to watch out for marketing tactics that promise savings but could end up costing you. One is the sense of urgency. Retailers don’t want you to think too hard about the purchase. So, they use terms like “flash deal” or put a short time limit on the deal. It plays on your fear of missing out. Another is naming the original price. It makes you fixate on what the item is supposedly worth, making the sale price even more attractive. But in many cases, that never was the original price, or at least it hasn’t been for a long time. That tactic is related to inflating the base price, then offering a steep discount – sometimes half or more. Do a price comparison to see what this retailer and others have actually charged over time. You may find the current sale is the same or little-changed from normal pricing. Finally, retailers try to build a fantasy in your mind, like a picture-perfect holiday dinner with guests all connecting and nobody fighting. Hey, if their product actually did all that, it would be worth whatever they want to charge. https://www.npr.org/2025/11/26/nx-s1-5604808/4-marketing-tricks-to-not-fall-for-this-holiday-season
Just weeks after President Trump signed deals with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to make their GLP-1 weight loss drugs more affordable, Eli Lilly has cut the price of its blockbuster drug Zepbound on its direct-to-consumer website by about 18%, or $50 per single dose vial. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/01/eli-lilly-prices-zepbound-weight-loss-drug-vials.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Over the weekend at the movies, “Zootopia 2” dominated ticket sales. With $96.8m, it fell a little short of last week’s performance by “Wicked: For Good” which dropped to second place with $62.8m this weekend. But the total for this weekend’s top ten films slightly exceeded the Friday through Sunday total for last weekend – making it one of the best this year. And the full holiday weekend was exceeded only by the Memorial Day weekend. “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” was 3rd with $7m, followed by “Predator: Badlands”, “The Running Man” and the debut of “Eternity” with $3.1m on just 1,300 screens. “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” opened on just 600 screens with a low $600k. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W48/
With the nation’s air transportation still recovering from the government shutdown, Mother Nature took a hand in Thanksgiving holiday travel. FlightAware reported over 12k delays and almost 1k flight cancellations in or out of the U.S. yesterday due to a major winter storm over the Midwest, the western Great Lakes, and parts of the East Coast. Airlines for America had predicted a record-breaking 31m passengers would be flying for the Thanksgiving holiday. www.morningbrew.com
Are you living in poverty, or aren’t you? The Department of Health and Human Services defines the US poverty line as $32,150 for a family of four. The line was established as a metric in 1965 under President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty”. It originally measured the cost of feeding a household for a year and multiplied it by three. About 10% of American households currently fit the HHS definition of impoverished. But a recent Harris poll found that one third of six-figure earners feel financially stretched. That’s why chief strategist and portfolio manager for Simplify Asset Management, Michael Green published a report last week that has since gone viral, saying that the real poverty line is $136,500 annual household income. Believe it or not, food is relatively cheaper than it was 60 years ago, but other essential costs like healthcare and housing have increased dramatically, leading to Green’s claim of household poverty even at well over $100k income. He says less than that limits full participation in the economy. The median household income for US families with at least two children was $109,300 last year. www.morningbrew.com
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the U.S. for 2025. Between June and the official end of the season yesterday, the Atlantic basin produced 13 named storms and five hurricanes. But for the first time in ten years, none of them made landfall in the U.S. Other countries weren’t so lucky. Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica as a Category 5 in October and after weakening a little, rolled over Cuba. Melissa was one of the top three strongest hurricanes ever to make landfall in the Atlantic basin. www.morningbrew.com
