But he has yet to practice since surgery to add screws and a plate to his left hand, which he injured in the first quarter of last Sunday’s game against the Raiders. In college football – There’s a lot of squabbling and finger-pointing surrounding coach Lane Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss for LSU. The deal was done on Saturday and announced Sunday. The school has dismissed that idea and disputed claims made by Kiffin to the media. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/47190811/ole-miss-ad-disputes-kiffin-version-events-exit-lsu

In they early hours of Wednesday morning, both Paul and Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank confirmed to ESPN that Paul is no longer with the team. He was expected to retire at the end of the season – his 21st in the NBA. Now he’s been retired. Even though the Clippers had lost 14 of the previous 16 games, Frank insists Paul is not being blamed for underperformance. The team now needs to either waive him and pay off the $3.6m salary due under his one-year contract, agree to a buyout, or look to trade him, which is something they can’t complete until December 15. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/47187141/clippers-send-cp3-home-road-trip-say-no-longer-team

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed and trading in a narrow range. The Dow was down a small fraction. The S&P 500 was up a small fraction. And the Nasdaq was up a tenth of a percent. Gold gained $12.10 on the Comex at $4,244.60 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 90 cents to $59.85 a barrel.
Payroll company, ADP released a jobs report yesterday showing the US private sector lost 32k jobs in November. It was the largest dip in the company’s report in almost three years. Companies with fewer than 50 employees shed 120k jobs. Large companies actually expanded by 90k. But even that growth was a slowdown from previous months. The government’s November jobs report isn’t due until December 16 – too late to be considered by the Federal Reserve at its final meeting of 2025 next week. If the Fed takes ADP’s numbers into account, it might be more likely to cut interest rates.
Costco has become one of the largest companies to sue the Trump administration over tariffs, hoping to secure refunds if the Supreme Court declares import duties imposed this year to be illegal. Lower courts have previously ruled that Trump improperly used emergency economic powers to enact the new levies. In May, Costco had said that about one third of its merchandise comes from overseas. The latest numbers from Costco have put the company’s stock on target for a net loss this year. https://www.npr.org/2025/12/02/nx-s1-5629011/costco-sues-trump-tariffs-refunds
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
The city of San Francisco on Tuesday initiated a lawsuit against some of the nation’s top food manufacturers alleging that ultra-processed food is responsible for a public health crisis. Ten companies were named including those responsible for Coca-Cola, Oreo cookies, Kit Kat, Cheerios and Lunchables. The suit argues these and other ultra-processed foods are linked to fatty liver disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancer. City Attorney David Chiu noted that the foods in question are “formulations of often chemically manipulated cheap ingredients with little any whole food added.” And that “These companies need to take responsibility for the harm they have caused.” The companies named in the lawsuit are Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle, Kraft Heinz, Post, Mondelez, General Mills, Kellogg, Mars, and ConAgra. https://apnews.com/article/san-francisco-lawsuit-processed-foods-ea0fd3fc1b76d1e37cda9c132dbcf477
The doctor who gave actor Matthew Perry Ketamine was sentenced yesterday to 30 months in federal prison. Salvador Plasencia pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution of Ketamine. He could have gotten as much as 10 years on each count. The judge noted that Plascencia did not give the fatal dose, but agreed that his actions contributed to the actor’s death. He is one of two doctors who’ve lost their medical licenses and been convicted of providing Perry with ketamine. https://abcnews.go.com/US/1st-person-set-sentenced-connection-matthew-perrys-fatal/story?id=128051617
The influential Consumer Reports 2026 auto brand rankings have been released. Subaru tops the list, followed by BMW, Porsche, Honda and Toyota. Tesla jumped from a mid-pack #18 last year to #10 this year. Lincoln was the only American brand scoring higher at #7. The only Tesla model that continues to score below average is the Cybertruck. Competing all-electric manufacturers Rivian and Fisher models are near the bottom of the reliability list. Manufacturers scoring at the bottom of CR’s list were Jeep, Land Rover, GMC, Dodge and Alfa Romeo. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/04/consumer-reports-auto-brand-rankings-tesla.html
President Trump has announced plans to roll back fuel efficiency standards set during the Biden administration. Under newly-proposed Department of Transportation rules, most cars would need to get at least 34 ½ miles per gallon by the 2031 model year. That’s down from the 50 miles per gallon standard set under Biden. The DOT says the change will save consumers $109b over the next five years – even though they’ll use more fuel. Critics say it allows auto makers to continue environmentally-unfriendly vehicles that’ll eventually cost us more that the gas pump. www.morningbrew.com
