LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A pedestrian was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Oceanside yesterday.  It happened just after noon near where Mission Avenue crossed the tracks between North Cleveland and North Myers Streets about two blocks from the beach.  No information about the victim has been released.  There were some road closures in the area and the Coast commuter train after the crash was delayed about 40 minutes. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/12/15/pedestrian-struck-killed-by-train-in-oceanside/

The city of Escondido yesterday declared a local emergency over the city’s homeless encampments and will meet in special session today to discuss remedies.  Neighbors along Escondido Creek have complained.  Some call the growing encampment “the jungle”.  Recent water quality tests have shown elevated levels of bacteria in water from the creek – about two to three times acceptable levels for coliform bacteria with some other bacteria at 7 to 14 times higher than acceptable.  The council will consider ratifying a proposed $4m to deal with the problem including putting up fencing and paying for removal of debris and invasive plant species.  Three previous efforts to clean up the creek bed have been unsuccessful in spite of removing 120 cubic yards of trash and debris from the creek from Harmony Creek Road to Citricado Parkway.  Firefighters have responded to 64 calls in that area this year compared with 24 all of last year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/12/15/escondido-declares-state-of-emergency-over-impacts-from-homeless-encampments/

The Fallbrook Library will reopen tomorrow after being closed for almost two months to replace the existing roof.  It had been planted with live materials back when the facility was built.  That proved problematic for both maintenance and the integrity of the roof itself.   (Fallbrook Village News)

Nvidia shares had hit an all-time high of $152.89 last week, but now its stock is falling into correction territory because of news today that China’s State Administration for Market Regulation is investigating whether the chip maker has violated its antimonopoly laws.  That’s on top of Nvidia losing its appeal last Thursday to a six-year old securities fraud lawsuit brought by shareholders.  Large investors and funds have been leery of investing in Nvidia in the past couple of trading sessions. https://www.investors.com/research/nvidia-nvda-stock-december-2024/#:~:text=From%20January%20to%20November%2C%20sales,has%20violated%20its%20antimonopoly%20laws.

Legal experts are saying it’s rare to see a settlement of the magnitude of what ABC is paying to settle the defamation suit by President-elect Donald Trump over comments made by George Stephanopoulos on the program “This Week” back in March at this stage of a case – before summary judgement.  Stephanopoulos repeatedly said Trump had been “found liable for rape” in the E. Jean Carrol civil case.  In fact, the jury found that Trump sexually abused Carrol, making him liable for battery.  But it did not find that there was proof of rape.  Trump’s case against ABC alleged actual malice, the highest and most difficult bar a public figure must meet to prove they were defamed.  Some pundits say ABC paid because they knew they were wrong and it’s costing them.  Others say they did it to get on the incoming President’s good side.  Anonymous insiders at the network say they just needed the case to go away, hence the $15m payment to the Trump Presidential Library. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/16/media/george-stephanopoulos-trump-settlement-abc/index.html

Some people are once again stockpiling food and other consumables, not because of shortages caused by a pandemic, or a disruption in distribution.  This time it’s because they think prices are about to soar because of tariffs.  President-elect Trump has promised increased tariffs on all imported goods.  Trump has threatened a 10% to 20% tariff on all goods imported into the US, a 60% or more levy on goods from China, and a 25% across-the-board tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada – places where many US companies located factories over the past several decades to take advantage of lower labor rates.  The threat could just be a negotiating tactic, but they have the potential to significantly increase the prices consumers pay on nearly everything that isn’t made entirely within the U.S. – and there aren’t very many things that are. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/16/economy/stockpiling-fear-higher-tariffs/index.html
