Administrative Law Judge Debra Nye-Perkins has ordered Anza-based Olivet University to shut down. The Christian college has been under federal investigation for alleged labor trafficking and money laundering. Olivet’s license was revoked and school officials have been ordered to stop enrolling new students and propose a plan to wrap up current students’ studies within 30 days, allowing them to complete their courses potentially at another institution. Olivet has been ordered to pay $64k towards the cost of a state investigation which found 14 violations at the Anza and Mill Valley campuses in 2022 and 2023. Recent testimony said many of those violations were still occurring. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/12/17/judge-orders-anza-based-christian-college-to-cease-operating-revokes-license/

The Department of Transportation yesterday approved direct flights from San Diego International Airport to Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, also known as DCA. Alaska Airlines will run direct flights to DCA, which is much more convenient to the Capital than Dulles International.
The Environmental Protection Agency today granted two requests from California to enforce strict standards for vehicle emissions, including a rule aimed at banning sales of new gasoline-powered cars in the state by 2035. The incoming Trump administration is likely to try to reverse the action. The California rule is stricter than a federal rule adopted this year that tightens emissions standards but does not require sales of electric vehicles. The EPA said its review found that opponents of the two waivers did not meet their legal burden to show how either the EV rule or a separate measure on heavy-duty vehicles was inconsistent with the federal Clean Air Act. https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2024/12/18/epa-grants-california-authority-to-ban-sales-of-new-gas-cars-by-2035-action-faces-reversal-by-trump

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained 4 tenths of a percent mainly thanks to a rally in shares for recently-embattled Nvidia. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up two tenths. LATE UPDATE: Today’s quarter percent interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve caused all three indexes to go significantly negative by 1 1/3% to over 2%. Gold fell $9.30 an ounce on the Comex, trading at $2,652.70. West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil gained 76 cents to $70.84 a barrel.
The Federal Reserve announced another rate cut today – its third cut this year. But said it’ll probably be the last one for a while now that the job market is holding steady and economic growth appears on track. The only thing not going according to the Fed’s plan is inflation. Its decline stalled out somewhat short of the Fed’s target of 2%. The central bank’s rate cuts began in September with a bold half-point cut. Some market watchers are concerned that President-elect Trump’s threatened tariffs on foreign-made goods will jack up inflation, whose effect on the economy overall would halt rate cuts by the Fed and possibly cause it to once again increase rates. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/18/economy/fed-rate-decision-december/index.html
Honda and Nissan are discussing a possible merger. Both are having relatively hard times and may look to leverage each other’s strengths through collaboration. In March, the two companies announced they would partner on electric vehicles and just four months ago, on battery technology. Both companies have struggled in the once-promising market in China – the world’s largest car market. Chinese consumers initially flocked to foreign brands, but more recently have shifted to domestic brands which are seen as a better value – particularly in the electric vehicle sector. Some of Nissan’s problems are related to its former CEO, Carlos Ghosn fleeing Japan for his native Lebanon in 2018. He’d been arrested on suspicion of financial misconduct and subsequently fired by Nissan. As a result, Renault sharply reduced its ownership stake in Nissan. Honda, which is about five times the size of Nissan says it plans to sell only zero-emission vehicles in major markets by 2040. But lagging demand, relatively cheap gas prices, and lack of charging infrastructure are casting doubt on that timetable. A combined Honda and Nissan would not only better compete with Tesla and Chinese car companies, it would also challenge Toyota as the top manufacturer in Japan. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/17/business/honda-nissan-merger-talks/index.html

Robert DeNiro’s portrayal of Travis Bickel in “Taxi Driver” notwithstanding, cabbies are in a better mental state than most people. According to a new study reported by Stat News, just 1% of operators of the yellow vehicles die from Alzheimer’s, compared with about 4% of the general population. Experts attribute this to drivers’ navigation skills, which exercise the hippocampus – the part of the brain that’s one of the first to break down from the disease. But it’s unclear if this phenomenon will last, as cab drivers increasingly rely on GPS instead of their own ability to find the fastest way across town during rush hour. According to the study, people in jobs that use predetermined routes—like pilots and bus drivers—do not have lower rates of Alzheimer’s. Bottom line, ditch the GPS and rely on that Thomas Brothers map in your head. www.morningbrew.com
