The Federal Reserve’s final interest rate decision of 2025 will be announced at noon Wednesday.

As expected, Paramount has launched a hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery after Netflix prevailed in the bidding war for Warner Bros. film studios and HBO Max streaming from WBD.  Paramount contends that keeping the company whole is in the best interests of its shareholders, who are being directly presented with a cash offer of $30 per share.  That sets WBD’s value at $108.4b.  The offer is backed up by equity financing from Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison and his family, private equity firm RedBird Capital, several major banks, and several Middle Eastern financing partners.  And finally, a portion of the money will come from Affinity Partners, the firm headed by President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.  The President has said he views the Netflix deal with “heavy skepticism”, indicating it may have trouble getting approved.  Netlfix already claims 46% of mobile app monthly active users in streaming worldwide, according to data from Sensor Tower, who says that share would increase to 56% when combined with HBO Max.  The film industry fears additional job losses and theater closures due to the acquisition.  There are bound to be anti-trust considerations in the regulatory approval process. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/08/paramount-skydance-hostile-bid-wbd-netflix.html

The President also says he’ll sign an executive order blocking states from setting their own AI regulations.  www.cnn.com

In spite of tariffs imposed by its main trading partner, the U.S., China’s trade surplus has surpassed $1 trillion – the biggest excess of exports to imports ever by any country. www.NYTimes.com

McDonald’s will begin assessing franchisees on their pricing as the chain tries to win back cash-strapped diners.  New pricing standards will go into effect the first of the year.  About 95% of McDonald’s restaurants worldwide are owned and run by franchisees.  But that entails operating under standards set by corporate … and McDonald’s are some of the strictest in the business.  The head office says this isn’t a one-size-fits-all mandate.  Rather, it’s a way to ensure appropriate pricing for the local market to further the success of restaurants at both the local and corporate level.  To that end, owner/operators will still set their own prices, but with the assistance of third-party pricing consultants and other tools provided by corporate. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/08/mcdonalds-value-franchising-standards.html

About eleven months after the devastating Pacific Palisades fire, the first rebuilt home is ready to be occupied – except that it won’t be.  A developer, Thomas James Homes bought the property for $3.4m two months before the fire.  They’d planned to demolish it.  The fire did that.  Now the new house will serve as an open-house model for the 100 additional homes the company hopes to build in Pacific Palisades in 2026.  www.morningbrew.com

On this day in music history – December 8,

  • 1961, The Beach Boys first single, “Surfin’” was released on Candix Records, a small LA-based label.  Popularity of the song in Southern California led Capitol Records to sign the group.  All Beach Boys songs from then on were released by Capitol.
  • In 1963, Frank Sinatra Jr. was kidnapped at gunpoint from a hotel in Lake Tahoe.  He was released two days later after his father paid the $240k ransom demand.  The kidnappers were later captured and sentenced to long prison terms.  In order to communicate with the abductors on pay phones, Frank Sr. carried around a roll of dimes which then became a lifetime habit.  He is said to have been buried with a roll of dimes.
  • In 1966, Paul McCartney did overdubs for his song, “When I’m Sixty-Four” after which The Beatles got to work on a new John Lennon song, “Strawberry Fields Forever”.
  • In 1968, Graham Nash left The Hollies to begin working with David Crosby and Stephen Stills as Crosby, Stills & Nash.
  • In 1969 at a trial in Canada on drug possession charges, Jimi Hendrix told the jury he had only smoked pot four times, snorted cocaine twice and taken LSD five times in his life.  He said he had “outgrown drugs”.  They found Hendrix not guilty.  He was intoxicated with barbiturates at the time of his death nine months later.
  • In 1976, The Eagles released their “Hotel California” album – the first with Joe Walsh in the group, replacing founding member Bernie Leadon.  It topped the charts for eight weeks and won a Grammy at the 20th annual awards.
  • In 1979, Styx were at #1 with “Babe”, their only chart-topping single.
  • In 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment building in New York City by 25-year old Mark Chapman, who’d been waiting outside the Dakota apartments since mid-morning.  He’d asked for and received an autograph from Lennon earlier in the day.  Shot five times, Lennon was pronounced dead due to massive blood loss at 11:30p at a New York hospital.  Chapman said he wanted to “steal” Lennon’s fame.  He also revealed that he planned the killing for three months and considered murdering other celebrities including David Bowie and Johnny Carson whom he thought were “phonies”.  Sentenced to 20 years to life for the killing, Chapman is still in prison.  He was again denied parole in September 2025. His next hearing is in 2027.  Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono has argued steadfastly against Chapman’s release, saying she fears for her safety and that of Lennon’s two sons, Julian and Sean.  She’s also concerned about retribution towards Chapman by angry Beatles fans if he were ever to be released.  At a previous parole hearing, the board once said they wouldn’t release Chapman out of concern that someone would kill him for notoriety – the same reason he justified killing Lennon.
  • In 1982, country singing star Marty Robbins died at age 57 of complications from heart surgery.  He had the first #1 song of the 1960s with “El Paso”.
  • In 1984, Vince Neil from Motley Crue was involved in a car accident in Redondo Beach in which a member of Hanoi Rocks was killed and two others injured.  He spent 15 days in jail, five years’ probation and paid $2.6m restitution.
  • In 2013, Metallica played a show in Antarctica, making them the first band ever to play on all seven continents.
  • In 2016, Mick Jagger became a father for the eighth time at age 73 when his 29-year old girlfriend, Melanie Hamrick gave birth to a boy.

Born on this day …

  • In 1925, Sammy Davis Jr.
  • In 1939, Jerry Butler, formerly with The Impressions.  He also had a #4 solo hit in 1969 with “Only the Strong Survive”.
  • In 1942, Toots Hibbert from Toots and the Maytals
  • Also in 1942, Bobby Elliott, drummer for The Hollies
  • In 1943, Jim Morrison, singer and lyricist for The Doors
