LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A crash involving at least five vehicles affected the morning commute on southbound I-15 in Escondido this morning.  It happened around 5:30a near Via Rancho Parkway.  At least three lanes were shut down until after 7a.  It wasn’t until 8:30a that all lanes reopened.  No injuries initially reported.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/multi-vehicle-crash-blocks-i-15-lanes-in-escondido-area-011326

San Diego County Supervisors voted 4-0 this morning to keep Terra Lawson-Remer as chairperson of that board, with Monica Montgomery Steppe serving as vice-chair and Paloma Aguirre as chair pro tem.  Supervisor Jim Desmond was absent from the vote due to illness.  He had opposed their appointments last year.  Supervisor Joel Anderson had abstained that time, but voted in favor today, while calling on the board to revert to its previous policy of having one-year terms for the positions, as it did before the pandemic. https://www.kpbs.org/news/politics/2026/01/13/san-diego-county-supervisors-vote-to-keep-lawson-remer-as-chair

About 500 people gathered at the intersection of Ash and East Valley Parkway in Escondido over the weekend to protest actions by ICE and the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis January 7.  The demonstration was one in a series across San Diego County recently including at the federal building, Front Street and Broadway, El Cajon and Chula Vista calling for ICE to stop detaining and harassing people and leave their communities.  Organizers took advantage of the gatherings to also collect food donations for families affected by federal immigration enforcement and recruit for their support networks.  Many participants say they view the protests as a moral obligation.  ICE issued a statement this week saying it supports peaceful protests, but warns that they have led to an increase in assaults on its agents. https://www.newsbreak.com/abc-10-news-kgtv-563645/4436533751778-hundreds-protest-in-escondido-following-ice-shooting-in-minneapolis

Videos circulated on social media over the weekend of two people running on the roof of an Amtrak train headed north towards Del Mar on Friday around sunset.  It wasn’t a movie shoot for the next Mission Impossible.  San Diego Sheriff’s office yesterday announced the arrest of two people who admitted to pulling the stunt.  One was traced to the 200 block of S. Coast Highway.  The second was found in the 300 block of S. Cedros Avenue.  Both were arrested for trespassing on railroad property.  No one was injured in the incident.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/two-arrested-for-riding-on-top-of-a-coaster-train-as-it-was-headed-towards-del-mar

SPORTS

In the NFL – In last night’s final Wild Card game, Houston got its first playoff win on the road in franchise history.  They broke loose a tight game early in the fourth quarter when Sheldon Rankins returned a fumble by Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers 33 yards for a touchdown.  Rodgers may be considering retirement after 21 NFL seasons.  The Texans will meet the Patriots in Foxboro Sunday as they try to reach the AFC championship game for the first time ever.  The divisional playoff round starts Saturday at 1:30p with Buffalo at Denver on CBS. https://apnews.com/article/texans-steelers-score-823ad70385c7d680623bfe8ab3993985

Following Sunday’s exit from the playoffs, the Chargers have fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin.  The Chargers only scored three points in Sunday’s loss to New England. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47600581/sources-chargers-fire-oc-greg-roman-two-seasons

Minnesota receiver Jordan Addison was arrested and charged with misdemeanor trespassing yesterday.  It’s his third brush with the law since the Vikings drafted him in 2023.  He’s up for a contract extension this spring. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47600657/vikings-jordan-addison-charged-trespassing-arrest

In the College Football Playoffs – #1 Indiana faces Miami next Monday in the CFP National Championship game at Miami Gardens, FL at 4:30p on ESPN

In the NBA – Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers with 35 points as they beat the visiting Charlotte Hornets yesterday 117-109.  Yesterday’s other winners were Utah, Indiana, Philadelphia, Dallas, Sacramento.

In the NHL – Nine games last night.  Dallas beat the Kings in Los Angeles 3-1.  Other winners were Florida, Detroit, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Montreal, New Jersey, Edmonton, and Toronto.

The last-place Columbus Blue Jackets have fired head coach Dean Evason whose been in charge for the team’s last 127 games.  He’s being replaced by Rick Bowness, who retired from coaching Winnipeg in 2024 after leading them to the playoffs in both of his two seasons there. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/47592587/columbus-blue-jackets-fire-dean-evason-hire-rick-bowness

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls next game is tomorrow hosting Abbotsford.

In Major League Baseball – After putting him on the market a year ago, the St. Louis Cardinals have traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to Arizona along with $31m in exchange for pitching prospect Jack Martinez.  The money helps cover the $42m remaining on Arenado’s contract for the next two years.  Arenado waived his no-trade clause to accomplish the deal. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47600142/diamondbacks-acquire-nolan-arenado-trade-cardinals

In soccer – Two of the world’s top soccer nations may not be able to attend the World Cup because of the Trump administration’s travel ban.  In December, Senegal and Ivory Coast were added to the list of countries with partial restrictions on entry to the United States, which is co-hosting this summer’s big event along with Mexico and Canada.  Fans and players from the West African countries who don’t already have visas will be barred from traveling here for the tournament.  Fans from Iran and Haiti had already been barred.  Trump cited “screening and vetting deficiencies” as the main reason for the travel restrictions. https://apnews.com/article/senegal-ivory-coast-fans-travel-ban-world-cup-55b17623936b444fd93af60edafa825c

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is Friday at Vancouver.

In golf – Brooks Koepka will return to the PGA Tour this year in spite of his defection to LIV golf four years ago.  During that time, he earned over $41m, which is more than me made in nine seasons on the PGA Tour, plus a signing bonus Koepka says was also nine figures.  The PGA’s threat of never letting any golfer return after defecting to LIV has proved to be a hollow one.  The strength of Koepka’s performance moving forward will determine both whether it’s better to have him with the Tour than not, and how big his fine will be for leaving four years ago.  It will cost him, but he’s OK with that.  And if having him with the Tour makes it stronger, it will make the PGA more money by allowing him back. https://apnews.com/article/brooks-koepka-brian-rolapp-pga-tour-liv-golf-8067536af9470dd55bee62dacbb40096

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks fell.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down two thirds of a percent.  The S&P 500 fell three tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by just under two tenths.  Gold gave back just a little of yesterday’s strong gains, trading down 20 cents at $4,615.50 an ounce on the Comex.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up sharply – $1.42, trading at $60.92 a barrel.

Today’s decline in stocks is being attributed to the latest Consumer Price Index report, which shows inflation remaining at a consistent 2.7%, the same as the prior month. www.cnn.com

President Trump today announced that he will immediately impose a 25% tariff on any country that does business with Iran in an attempt to add pressure on that country’s government.  Years of Western sanctions have beaten down the OPEC member nation’s economy, causing high inflation, unemployment and the collapse of its currency.  Those problems have led to recent protests by Iranians in which at least 646 people have died.  China, which buys 80% of Iran’s oil output, has threatened to retaliate if Trump’s threat is carried out.  Other countries that could find themselves in the line of fire in this trade battle include India, Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates.  It was not made clear by the White House how the new tariff would be applied and whether it would be in addition to the 45% China already faces for most goods.  The tariff against India is currently 40%.   https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/12/trump-tariffs-iran

With credit card interest rates near all-time highs, President Trump has floated the idea of putting a one-year cap on those rates at 10%, calling current card market rates abusive.  Bank stocks fell as a result.  As of November, the average rate was 22.3%, according to the Federal Reserve.  That means some cards are even higher.  A decade ago, credit card rates averaged just 13.9%.  Today’s higher rates are a result of higher delinquencies and balances showing past-due, as well as Fed’s elevated interest rates over the past several years.  A bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate last year would have temporarily capped credit card interest rates at 10%.  But that bill hasn’t gone anywhere.  Similar legislation has been proposed in the House.  The Bank Policy Institute, which represents several banking associations, says the President’s goals would be “devastating” for families and small business owners, and called the Senate bill “draconian”.  The BPI also said that two-thirds of cardholders who roll over their balances month to month cold lose access to credit lines or have them limited, and minimum payments could rise if such legislation were enacted. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/12/nx-s1-5675151/trump-credit-card-interest-rate-cap

Alphabet joined the $4 trillion club yesterday.  Only four companies have ever done that.  Google’s parent company is riding the wave thanks to its increasingly competitive AI business.  A recently reported deal with Apple will have Google’s Gemini powering iPhone’s long-promised AI upgrades, including an updated Siri.  Bloomberg had previously reported that Apple planned to pay Alphabet $1b annually for those services.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

An offshore wind developer prevailed in court yesterday over the White House’s efforts to shut it down.  Revolution Wind has received all of its federal permits and is nearly 90% complete off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut.  The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that the government did not explain why it could not take action short of a complete stoppage of construction to address its concerns about the project in terms of national security, therefore construction can continue while its case with the federal government proceeds.  President Trump has said his goal is to prevent any “windmills” from being built.  Revolution Wind was one of four projects affected by Trump’s cancellation on Friday of $7.6b in clean energy grants for projects in states that voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.  Three energy developers have challenged the administration’s freeze of offshore wind projects in federal court this week. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/12/g-s1-105808/offshore-orsted-revolution-wind-trump-court-clean-energy
