Diplomats are working behind the scenes to arrange new talks between the U.S. and Iran one day after Washington enacted a blockade of Iranian ports.  In response, Tehran threatened strikes on new targets.  Meanwhile, the ceasefire appears to be holding, but it’s fragile with the rest of the world suffering the economic fallout.  The war in Iran is now in its 7th week.  More than 3k are dead in Iran, 2k in Lebannon, 23 in Israel, at least a dozen in Gulf Arab states, and 13 U.S. military have been killed. https://apnews.com/article/us-iran-war-lebanon-israel-talks-hormuz-14-april-2026-24655d40b2d968c39949e5ec2e01535b

The Labor Department released its March producer price index today.  That’s the measure of inflation before it hits consumers.  It was up a half a point from February and 4% from March of 2025.  That last number was the biggest increase in more than three years.  Energy prices soared 8 ½% from February.  Food prices fell 0.3% in March after surging 2.4% in the previous month.  The White House still wants the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, even though today’s inflation data is one more reason for rates to be increased. https://apnews.com/article/inflation-oil-gasoline-inflation-trump-6990c9ca0e19553b40c13af11b9c575b

The biggest burger chain in the world will begin selling energy drinks later this year.  McDonald’s new Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer, Mango Pineapple Refresher, and Dirty Dr. Pepper will be priced lower than competing drinks at Starbucks, Sonic, Taco Bell and other chains already in the energy drink market.  The high-profit drink sector is one way for McDonald’s to make up for customers downsizing their meal orders.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

California Rep. Eric Swalwell from the 15th District not only ended his campaign for Governor on Sunday, yesterday he submitted his resignation to Congress over claims of sexual misconduct, which he denies.  But he also says his resignation reflects his taking “responsibility and ownership for mistakes I did make.”  Earlier in the day, the House Ethics Committee announced it was investigating the 45-year old Democrat for multiple incidents of sexual misconduct, including towards an employee under his supervision.  In an unrelated matter, Republican Rep. Tony Gonzalez from Texas announced his retirement after the House Ethics Committee launched a probe into his alleged romantic affair with a staffer who later died by suicide. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/live-blog/trump-swalwell-california-governor-congress-dhs-shutdown-live-updates-rcna328504

On this day in music history – April 14,

  • In 1963, the Rolling Stones played the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, named for Bo Diddley’s 1960 song “Doing the CrawDaddy”.  The Stones performed Bo Diddly’s song in their set. All four of the Beatles were in the audience.  This famous club would inspire the name of the American music magazine, Crawdaddy!
  • In 1966, The Spencer Davis Group hit #1 in England with “Somebody Help Me”.  It failed to make the U.S. Top 40.
  • In 1967, David Bowie’s novelty record, “The Laughing Gnome” was released.  It was a little like David Seville’s chipmunks and Sheb Wooley’s “Purple People Eater”.  It made the British Top ten when re-released in 1973
  • On the same day, Polydor Records released The Bee Gees first single, “New York Mining Disaster 1941” touting them as the most significant talent since The Beatles.  It made the Top 20.
  • In 1969, Paul McCartney and John Lennon recorded “The Ballad of John and Yoko”.  George and Ringo did not take part.  Paul & John played all the instruments.  Many radio stations banned the song for being blasphemous because of the lyrics, “Christ, you know it ain’t easy.”
  • In 1971, The Illinois Crime Commission issued a list of what it believed to be drug-oriented records including Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”, The Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”, and “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Procol Harum.
  • In 1972, David Bowie’s “Starman” was released as a single.  It became his first hit since “Space Oddity” three years earlier.  It was a late addition to the album, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars”.
  • In 1973, Led Zeppelin had the number one album in both the U.S. and their native Britain with “Houses of the Holy”.  The cover featured a naked 6-year old girl climbing up Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland.
  • In 1975, after rumors that just about every leading guitarist in rock music would replace Mick Taylor in The Rolling Stones, a press release announced Ronnie Wood would be the one joining the band for their upcoming U.S. Tour.
  • In 1980, Gary Numan released “The Touring Principle”, the first commercially available long-form rock video in England.
  • In 1983, former bass player for The Pretenders, Pete Farndon died of a drug overdose.  He’d been in the middle of forming a new band with former Clash drummer Topper Headon.
  • In 1995, actor, writer and folk singer Burl Ives died of cancer at age 85.  He had hits including “The Blue Tail Fly” and won an Oscar for his supporting role in The Big Country.
  • In 2009, former Beatle George Harrison was given a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Sir Paul McCartney, Harrison’s widow Olivia and son Dhani all attended the unveiling outside the Capitol Records building.
  • In 2015, soul singer Percy Sledge died of liver cancer at the age of 73.  He had the 1966 #1 hit “When a Man Loves a Woman”.

Born on this day …

  • In 1932, country music star Loretta Lynn, the first woman ever named Country Music Artist Entertainer of the Year.
  • In 1942, British singer Tony Burrows, who holds the distinction of singing on four records that were all in the British top ten at the same time, each one under a different group name.  Edison Lighthouse’s “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”, White Plains’ “My Baby Loves Lovin’”, The Brotherhood of Man’s “United We Stand”, and “Gimme Dat Ding” by The Pipkins.  All four were also hits in the U.S. – just not simultaneously in the Top Ten as in Britain.
  • In 1945, Deep Purple guitarist and songwriter Ritchie Blackmore
  • In 1948 Larry Ferguson from Hot Chocolate
