LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An accident on northbound Old Highway 395 near North Mission during this morning’s commute resulted in one person transported to Palomar Medical Center and the temporary closure of Old 395.  It happened around 8:15a.  First responders found at least one vehicle down an embankment.  The vehicles involved were a gray Honda Civic and a gray Scion. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/04/09/news/1-injured-in-crash-near-old-hwy-395/81653.html

Suspected fuel thieves in Fallbrook yesterday allegedly drilled into the tank of a U-Haul parked on West College Street, sending gasoline spilling across the street and towards the creek beside Pico Promenade Trail. Two people were rescued from the waters of the Oceanside Harbor entrance this weekend after their sailboat capsized.  Oceanside Fire Department and lifeguard personnel responded shortly before 9p Saturday to reports of an overturned sailboat up against the jetty.  One person was taken to a hospital in stable condition.  https://www.newsbreak.com/newsradio-600-kogo-562159/4589140149633-two-rescued-from-oceanside-boating-accident  

Weather Forecasters are sounding the alarm that the return of El Niño this year could be one of the worst in California’s history if it develops as many meteorologists have recently predicted.  The return of this year’s climate phenomenon is being dubbed Super El Niño, and in some cases, Godzilla El Niño, which could trigger weather-related disasters and extreme heatwaves in California during the 2026-2027 weather season.  Strong El Niño years have historically seen torrential winter storms, flooding and coastal erosion in California. The tail end of yesterday’s storm is passing through Pala this afternoon.  It’ll be sunny with highs in the 70s the rest of the week.  Mid 80-s this weekend. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

 

SPORTS

In the NBA – It their final game of the season, the Lakers beat the Jazz 131-107 with LeBron James scoring 18 in just the first half of the game.  The Clippers also finished with a win, 115-110 over the visiting Warriors.  Yesterday’s other winners were Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Miami, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Toronto, Dallas, Houston, Minnesota, Phoenix, Denver, and Portland.  Final standings for the regular season – in the Eastern Conference, it was Detroit in first place, followed by Boston, New York, Cleveland, Toronto, and Atlanta.  In 7th through 10th place, the play-in teams are Philadelphia, Orlando, Charlotte, and Miami.  In the Western Conference, with the best record in the league, it was Oklahoma City, followed by San Antonio, Denver, the Lakers, Houston, and Minnesota.  The play-in teams are Phoenix, followed by Portland, the Clippers and Golden State.  The play-ins begin tomorrow with Miami at Charlotte at 4:30p and Portland at Phoenix at 7p, both on Prime Video.

Word is the Milwaukee Bucks will not be having Doc Rivers back as coach next season after missing the postseason this year.  www.apnews.com 

In the NHL – Yesterday’s winners were Washington, Montreal, Boston, New Jersey, Calgary, and Vancouver over the Ducks in Anaheim 4-3 in overtime.  The Kings are at Seattle tonight.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls split a pair of games at Bakersfield Friday and Saturday.  Their next game is at home against Tucson Wednesday.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres had a second straight walk-off win over the Rockies on a 3-run homer by Gavin Sheets in the bottom of the 9th Friday.  Final score 5-2.  They won again Saturday and completed the sweep in Denver yesterday with a 7-2 win.  The Dodgers took two out of three from the visiting Rangers, losing yesterday 5-2.  The Angels won two out of three in Cincinnati including yesterday’s 9-6 win.  The Padres and Angels have today off.  The Dodgers host the Mets. The Padres five-game win streak puts them 1 ½ games behind the first-place Dodgers. Arizona is 2 ½ off the pace in the NL West.  The Dodger have the most wins in MLB so far this season with 11.  The Padres and Braves each have 10. https://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm completed their first homestand of the season beating the Quakes 14-6.  The two teams split the 6-game series three games apiece.  The Storm will be at Stockton for the first of six games beginning tomorrow.

In the NFL – The Department of Justice is launching an investigation into anticompetitive tactics by the NFL that are allegedly making watching games on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms unnecessarily expensive for consumers.   The government probe comes as the NFL is looking to renegotiate media rights deals with networks earlier than previously planned.  With its shorter game schedule, the NFL has the largest concentration of games on broadcast television of any major sport.  CBS currently pays the league $2.1b a year.  CNBC is reporting that the NFL is seeking more than $3b for its next deal. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/09/doj-investigating-nfl-media-rights-antitrust.html

In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC opened its season with a 2-1 loss to the visiting Minnesota United.  The Galaxy beat Austin FC 2-1.  LAFC lost to Portland 2-1.  San Diego and the Galaxy are on the road this Saturday.  LAFC hosts San Jose Sunday.

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals beat The Swarm in Duluth, Georgia yesterday 9-7.  Their next game is Friday hosting Las Vegas.   

In golf – At the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Rory McIlroy was the repeat champion with a 12-under par 276, one stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler.  https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – Ty Gibbs won the NASCAR Cup race yesterday at Bristol Motor Speedway.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained less than a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 rose almost a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was up 7 tenths.  Gold fell $20.20 on the Comex to $4,767.20 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $2.67 to 99.24 a barrel as President Trump’s blockade of Iran’s ports takes effect. 

A federal judge dismissed President Trump’s $10b defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch over a story about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.  The judge said Trump failed to prove malicious intent, but left the door open for him to file an amended complaint.  On Truth Social, Trump proclaimed that a “win”.  https://apnews.com/article/trump-murdoch-wall-street-journal-lawsuit-40e7aba7731db9e8800488038cb92a66

More than 1k major Hollywood players published an open letter proclaiming their absolute opposition to the $111b merger of Paramount with Warner Bros. Ineos Automotive, a startup vehicle manufacturer founded by British chemical mogul James Ratcliffe has its sights set on expansion of its American sales.  With 35k off-road SUVs and pickups produced since its beginning in 2022, ambitious growth plans call for up to 35% year-over-year growth as it announces record sales for its gas and diesel-powered Grenadier 4x4s today.  The flagship model begins at $71k.  The top-of-the-line Grenadier Detour goes for $157k.  Ineos is currently selling vehicles in 50 countries.  But it hopes to make the U.S. its main market with up to 250k per year by 2030.  Manufacturing is currently at a former Mercedes-Benz plant in France.  They’re looking into adding a factory in the U.S. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/13/ineos-automotive-grenadier-suv-james-ratcliffe.html

Eastman Kodak, once one of the most-ubiquitous companies in the world was on the brink of bankruptcy a dozen years ago.  Plans were afoot to close its acetate factory – the main ingredient in movie film.  Thanks to a conversation with director Chris Columbus in 2019 on the first day on the job for CEO Jim Continenza, that plan was cancelled.  Along with astute refinancing several times, things are successfully turning around for the 138-year old company.  Multiple Oscar-winning movies last year were shot on Kodak film.  Its stock has doubled in the past year. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/11/kodak-film-business-ceo-jim-continenza.html

Over the weekend at the movie box office, the top three most popular films remained the same as last week – “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, followed by “Project Hail Mary” and “The Drama”.  Mario sold another $69m worth of tickets, making its first ten-day domestic total $308m.  “You, Me & Tuscany” debuted in fourth place, selling $8m in tickets.  The live event, “BTS World Tour …” placed 6th with $2.4m in sales.  In 8th place, the limited release of “Exit 8”, which had the third-best per-screen average of the weekend.  “Faces of Death” bombed in its debut with $1.3m – good for 9th place.  The total for this weekend’s top ten films was a third below the three-day Easter weekend, but still way above the average for the year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W15/

  • 1962, The Beatles made their third and final trip to Hamburg as a struggling bar band with a 48-night residency at The Star Club, during which they had only one day off.
