LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A motorcyclist died yesterday afternoon as the result of a collision with a Nissan Altima in San Marcos around 5:30p. It happened in the 2300 block of Montiel Road. The rider was pronounced dead by first responders shortly after. The driver of the car remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No identities were released and it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were a factor. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/motorcyclist-23-killed-in-collision-with-car-in-san-marcos
A trash truck caught fire while making pickups yesterday afternoon in Temecula. Firefighters were called to the scene around 2p at Brewster Court and San Marco Drive. There were no injuries. Cleanup of the burned, soggy garbage removed from the truck took several hours as fire investigators searched for the cause. A CR&R spokesperson said trash truck fires are not uncommon, due to customers discarding devices containing lithium-ion batteries. Electronic devices with such batteries as well as flammable liquids, chemicals, aerosol cans and florescent light bulbs should only go to hazardous waste collection events, such as the one going on this week for Pala residents and employees at Pala Transfer Station. https://patch.com/california/temecula/trash-truck-fire-ignites-temecula-neighborhood
Deputies from the Valley Center Sheriff’s Station yesterday arrested the man accused of threatening two juveniles and then vandalizing their car in November. 27-year old Jaymes Martinez was booked on two counts of threatening with a deadly weapon and one count of vandalism. The incident happened November 5 around 4:30p near the intersection of Valley Center Road and Irish Oaks Road. In yesterday’s media release, the Sheriff’s office thanked the public for numerous tips that ultimately led to the arrest of Martinez. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/sheriffs-deputies-arrest-man-accused-of-threatening-kids/
San Diego County Sheriff’s office announced that a man has been arrested for allegedly firing more than a dozen shots into the air near Vista High School Sunday evening. Witnesses reported a silver Lexus sedan near the intersection of Anza and Arcadia Avenues around 10p with multiple shots fired from a handgun by someone in the car. Deputies found 14 shell casings near the intersection as a Sheriff’s helicopter located the Lexus parked outside an apartment in the 900 block or Arcadia – one block away. Airborne personnel observed 42-year old Sergio Abrego get out of the vehicle, drop a handgun, then pick it up again. He was taken into custody without incident. Deputies found a machete and a loaded 9mm magazine and a ghost gun with extended magazine. Agrego was booked into Vista jail on multiple weapons charges. https://www.newsbreak.com/newsradio-600-kogo-562159/4441559740242-gunshots-fired-near-vista-school-arrest-made

The San Diego Food Bank’s North County operations now have a new permanent home in Vista. After years of leasing warehouse space, ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held Friday at a new 60k square foot facility at 2260 Oak Ridge Way, the former site of Advanced Web Offset news printing. In the ten years since the Food Bank took over the operations of North County Food Bank, annual distributions from the local branch have grown from a half-million pounds of food annually to 9.2m last year. The new location not only saves the non-profit organization money, it also has expanded refrigeration and freezer space, a larger Client Choice pantry, and an on-site Diaper Bank. https://www.northcoastcurrent.com/north-coast-link/2026/01/san-diego-food-bank-opens-permanent-vista-facility/

As expected for the past several weeks, Saks Global, the parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman has filed for bankruptcy protection. The company has been struggling since it acquired Neiman Marcus in 2024 and now finds itself with unsustainable debt. The company has also replaced CEO Richard Baker with former Neiman Marcus CEO Geoffroy van Raemdonck. Baker had only been in the position for two weeks. Saks had lined up $1.75b in new financing – mostly debtor-in-possession before filing Chapter 11. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/14/saks-global-files-for-bankruptcy-protection.html
Netflix is expected to change its proposed purchase of the HBO Max and film studio portion of Warner Bros. Discovery to an all-cash deal. Shareholders were expected to vote on the sale in Spring or early Summer. If Netflix switches to an all-cash deal, that could move the vote up to February or March. Meanwhile, Paramount Skydance is proceeding with its attempt at a hostile takeover of all of Warner Bros. Discovery including its TV networks at a valuation about 8% higher than the Netflix deal. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/14/netflix-warner-bros-discovery-deal-all-cash.html
China’s trade surplus surged another 20% in 2025 to a record $1.2 trillion, even figuring in Trump’s tariffs. Exports were up 5 ½% to $3.77 trillion, while imports to China were flat at $2.58 trillion. Tariffs did squelch exports to the U.S., which were down 20%. But the Chinese economy continued to grow with 26% more exports to Africa, 13% more to Southeast Asian countries, and about 7% or 8% to the European Union and Latin America. The head of the International Monetary Fund last month called for China to fix its trade imbalances by boosting domestic demand and investment, which has been stunted after a government crackdown on excessive borrowing, triggering defaults by many Chinese developers. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/14/nx-s1-5677029/chinas-trade-surplus-surges-1-2-trillion-trump-tariffs
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
A survey by NPR of prices on 114 items at Walmart shows that although inflation is holding at 2.7%, the cost of groceries is still rising faster than overall inflation. Half of NPR’s shopping list got more expensive last year, with the total rising 5%. Price increases on items from China and Vietnam appear to be tariff-related. Other increases can be attributed to weather events affecting the harvest of crops including cacao and coffee beans. Eggs and paper products led the list of items with declining prices. The price of eggs is down almost 30% from the spike in 2024. The price of Cheerios fell 19%. Name brands have been worried about consumers shifting to store-brand competitors or eliminating their products entirely – and with good reason. A 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola was up 7.6%. Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil was up 13% in part due to tariffs on the mineral. Head & Shoulders shampoo was up 17 ½%. Dole canned pineapple was up 25.3%. Hershey’s and Lindt chocolates were up around 26%. Pen+Gear pocket paper folders were up 46%. That last one is an example of a product made in China. Maxwell House coffee was up 46% due to both tariffs and weather. Walmart ground beef was up 30%. As a result, Walmart and many other grocers are now marketing a cheaper option – a blend of beef and ground pork. NPR did spot a case of “shrinkflation” with smaller bottles of Tide laundry detergent. But Proctor & Gamble says the change from 84 ounces to 80 is due to a new formula that allows customers to use less product. The bottle still says it’s good for 64 loads of laundry. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/14/nx-s1-5638908/walmart-prices-inflation-affordability-shrinkflation
