The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Though wind and Red Flag fire warnings remain in effect, the extreme winds predicted a few days ago for now have failed to fully develop, giving firefighters an opportunity to catch up.  Even though some evacuation orders for the major LA fires have been lifted, they’re still in place for 82,400 people.  But warnings have been expanded due to today’s anticipated winds.  The Palisades fire is now at 23,700 acres with 19% containment.  It has destroyed an estimated 10k structures.  The next-largest, the Eaton Fire has burned over 14,000 acres and is now 45% contained.  7k structures have been lost there.  With some people still missing, at least two dozen have been confirmed dead.  KTLA 5’s latest post has many links for fire victims that can also be helpful for those looking into the welfare of friends and relatives in the greater Los Angeles area.  Once everything is added up, the scale of destruction from just these two fires could make them the most expensive natural disaster is U.S. history, according to experts currently analyzing the damage.  It will definitely affect the future of home insurance in California.   https://ktla.com/news/california/wildfires/live-updates-palisades-eaton-fires-resources/

Here are links for Los Angeles County maps assessing the individual structure damage in both the Palisades and Eaton Fires

A reported ten-acre fire broke out in Ramona yesterday morning around 6:54a.  Crews had is mostly controlled within about 20 minutes.  Cal Fire later updated the acreage burned to 3 ½ acres.  There were no injuries or structural damage. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/brush-fire-erupts-in-ramona-area-during-windy-conditions-011425

A 2 ½ acre brush fire in the Santa Ana River bottom in Riverside has been determined to have been arson. No arrests have been made yet.  Parts of Mt. Rubidoux were evacuated and the Mission Inn was closed.  No homes were threatened and no residents were evacuated.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/01/14/riverside-brush-fire-found-to-be-arson-2-6-acre-blaze-blocked-travel-to-jurupa-valley-and-cleared-out-mt-rubidoux/

SDG&E currently has power shutoffs in effect for about 6k customers, mostly in East County.  There is a possibility of additional wind events in the region on Monday and again a week from tomorrow. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/14/sdge-shuts-off-power-to-nearly-900-customers-as-santa-ana-winds-pick-up/

Residents of the Oceana neighborhood are asking the Oceanside City Council to overturn the Planning Commission’s approval of a six-story apartment building just off El Camino Real at the main entrance to the senior community. The mixed-use development would place 73 apartments, four live-work units, and ground-floor commercial space on a lot now occupied by an aging two-story office building at the corner of Vista Bella and Vista Rey streets, between the Coastline Baptist Church and a gas station. In a news release yesterday about the filing of the appeal, residents said they would lose their ocean views and the value of retiree-owned homes would drop by tens of thousands of dollars with no compensation. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/01/14/senior-community-working-to-overturn-approval-of-6-story-oceanside-development/

The current Santa Ana wind event is just about over – only peaking at about 20 miles an hour today in Pala.  But this will be the last warm day for a while.  Expect high temperatures in the mid-60s and overnight lows near freezing for about the next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a.  There will be no mass broadcast on 1/19.

SPORTS

In the NFL – The city of Cleveland has filed a lawsuit to stop the Browns from leaving their lakefront stadium and building a new domed stadium in suburban Brook Park.  The suit, filed yesterday, seeks to invoke the “Modell Law” to stop the Browns from moving. The state law says any professional sports owner who uses a tax-supported facility for home games and gets funding from the state or a political subdivision can’t leave unless it gets permission to play elsewhere or gives six months’ notice.  In October, the Browns announced they informed the city of their intentions to build a $2.4 billion state-of-the-art stadium and entertainment complex in Brook Park — which is in the same county but 15 miles south of Cleveland — when their stadium lease with the city expires at the end of the 2028 NFL season. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/43425506/browns-sued-cleveland-proposed-stadium-move-suburbs

In college football – Next Monday’s College Football Championship game will be Ohio State at Notre Dame.  It’ll be the first CFP championship game in which neither team ranked higher than #7. https://www.espn.com/college-football/schedule/_/week/999/year/2024/seasontype/3

In the NBA – Yesterday’s winners were Cleveland, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Denver and Brooklyn.

The NBA has now rescheduled a total of nine games as a result of fires in LA and ice in the East. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/43426756/nba-reschedules-nine-games-result-wildfires-ice-storm

In college hoops – #1 Auburn dominated #15 Mississippi State 88-66.  #3 Duke won its game against an unranked opponent.  #4 Alabama fell to #21 Ole Miss 74-64.  #7 Marquette needed overtime to top unranked DePaul 85-83.  #8 Kentucky topped #11 Texas A&M 81-69.  San Diego state beat visiting Colorado State 75-60.

In the NHL – Yesterday’s winners were Boston, Dallas, San Jose, Seattle, Washington, Columbus, Florida, Ottawa, St. Louis, Nashville, Winnipeg, Colorado, and Montreal.

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game is this Saturday at Henderson.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up sharply.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.6%.  The S&P 500 was up 1 ¾%.  The Nasdaq soared 2.3%.  Gold was up on the Comex as well – $35.50 higher at $2,717.80 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $2.34 at $79.84 a barrel.

Today’s stock rally is being driven by strong earnings reports from major banks including JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs and by a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released this morning.  After remaining stubbornly high for months, the Consumer Price Index finally slowed a little.  That, combined with better-than-expected wholesale inflation data yesterday was just the kind of optimism the stock market needed. Although the CPI did increase 0.4% over November’s numbers, ticking the annual inflation rate up to 2.9%, most of that was driven by food and gas prices, which economists discount as being too volatile to mark a trend.  Core CPI fell a tenth from the 3.3% it had been since September to 3.2% in December.  It was not expected to.  But what makes investors euphoric is not the same as what eases the challenges of those less well-off.  Prices of everyday consumer items have risen 21% since 2021.  In a typical four-year period that would have only been about 10%.  Although wages have risen faster than inflation for 20 months, the Labor Department figures show they’re still below where they were four years ago.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/15/economy/us-cpi-consumer-price-index-december/index.html

For the second time in a year, crafting and fabrics retail chain Joann has filed for bankruptcy.  The 82-year old company filed Chapter 11 last March and emerged without closing any stores.  This time it’ll sell most all of its assets.  Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which recently bought most of Big Lots is the leading bidder.  Joann is open to better offers. https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/15/business/joann-bankruptcy/index.html

The Temecula Outback Steakhouse location is closing in the next few days.  The location on Winchester Road will remain open until they run out of food.  The manager says that’ll be as early as Friday or as late as Sunday.  The restaurant is one of 688 scheduled for closure in the Bloomin’ Brands chain. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temeculas-outback-steakhouse-closes-week-what-know

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Coors Light is changing its name – but only temporarily.  It’ll be the first rebranding since the brand debuted in 1978.  As soon as next week, cans will be on shelves bearing the name, “Mondays Light”.   It’s a promotion tied to the NFL.  They’ve been subtly leading up to it with ads that misspelled the word “refreshment”, calling it “A case of the Mondays”.  Super Bowl will be played on Sunday, February 9, meaning the following Monday is the dreaded first day with no football.  Mondays Light is intended to give fans a reason to either celebrate or console themselves after football season.  Coors is hoping to take advantage of Bud Light’s recent drop in market share and the declining popularity of craft beers.  The new, rebranded cans will only be available in 24-packs, tying into the “case of Mondays” slogan, and probably not past February. https://www.vice.com/en/article/coors-light-is-rebranding-with-a-new-name/

Your car may know more about you than you think.  Modern vehicles capture data about where you’ve been, how fast you drive, how easy you are on the brakes and more.  Data is power and vehicles have been collecting it for years.  Some of it gets sold to third parties like insurance companies which have used it to hike rates on some customers.  It also gets used by law enforcement.  Tesla turned over information on the Cybertruck that was exploded outside Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day, earning praise from the Las Vegas Sheriff.  Others are concerned about invasion of privacy.  Customer backlash to General Motors’ “Smart Driver” program which sold driving habit information to insurance companies caused the cancellation of that program.  Even so, the Texas Attorney General has sued GM over the practice.  But if you look deep enough in your owner’s manual or purchase agreement, you’ll find that more than 90% of new vehicles can send information from the vehicle to its manufacturer.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/15/business/car-manufacturers-data-collection/index.html

On this day in music history – January 15,

  • 1961, The Supremes signed with Motown records and the rest is history.  They became the label’s most commercially successful group with 12 chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • In 1965, The Who released their first single, “I Can’t Explain”.  On it, session musician, Jimmy Page plays guitar and The Ivy League sing backup.
  • In 1967, Ed Sullivan demanded that The Rolling Stones change the title lyrics of their current hit “Let’s Spend the Night Together” before performing it on his show.  His exact words were, “The song goes or you go”.  Mick Jagger sang “time” instead of “night”, rolling his eyes each time it came up in the song and managed to sneak in “night” once.  If you listen closely, the prerecorded backing track still sounds like “night.”  It was the second time they got banned from the Sullivan show.  But like the first, they ended up coming back anyway.
  • In 1972, “American Pie” began the first of four weeks at #1.  It chronicles the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, calling it “the day the music died”.  It was a radio programmer’s nightmare at 8 ½ minutes, but disc jockeys loved it for bathroom breaks.   A few years ago, the original recording was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its “cultural, historic, or artistic significance”.
  • Also In 1972, Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” debuted on the singles chart, topping out at #15.
  • In 1977, the Eagles had the #1 album with “Hotel California”.
  • In 1983, Men at Work had the #1 single with “Down Under”.  Anyone for a vegemite sandwich?
  • In 1992, former bass player with Elton John’s band, Dee Murray died after suffering a stroke at age 45.  Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson had also been members of the Spencer Davis Group in the 1960s.
  • In 1994, Harry Nilsson died in his sleep of heart failure.  Back in 1968, both John Lennon and Paul McCartney told reporters Nilsson was their favorite American artist.
  • In 2018, Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan died unexpectedly while in London for a recording session.

Born on this day …

  • in 1941, Don Van Vliet – better known as Captain Beefheart.
  • In 1942, Edward Bivens from The Manhattans.
  • In 1946, Bobby Bloom who’s best known for the 1970 hit “Montego Bay”.
  • In 1948, Ronnie Van Zant from Lynryd Skynyrd.
  • In 1951, Motels lead singer, Martha Davis.
  • In 1952, Melvyn Gale, cellist with Electric Light Orchestra.
