31k Kaiser Permanente nurses and other health care workers in California and Hawaii plan to strike later this month as a result of stalled contract negotiations. Unlike the five-day work stoppage by members of the United Nurses Associations of California and Union of Health Care Professionals in October, the union has not indicated how long this one, scheduled to begin January 26 may last. The strike will affect nearly 20 hospitals and 200 clinics, mostly in California. The most recent contract with Kaiser expired at the end of September. At issue are wages, staffing levels and other matters. The union is holding out for a 25% wage hike over four years. Kaiser hasn’t budged from its offer of 21 ½%. https://patch.com/california/los-angeles/31k-strike-again-ca-hospitals-what-know
In spite of concerns over parking and spoiled views, the Oceanside City Council on Wednesday approved a project to build 370 new apartments just steps from Oceanside Pier and the beach in the form of one seven-story and one eight-story building on either side of Pier Way. The project includes 560 parking spaces and commercial space. About 10% of the apartments are reserved for low-income residents, defined as having an annual salary of $92,700 for one person – $132,400 for a family of four. The developer, Ryan Companies has built two other projects in the area. Mayor Esther Sanchez and Deputy Mayor Eric Joyce voted no on the project, hoping to continue negotiating aspects of the plan with Ryan. Over 1k downtown living units have been approved by the city council in the past year. https://inewsource.org/2026/01/16/downtown-oceanside-new-housing-apartment-building/
The four-person crew from NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission to the International Space Station splashed down safely in the ocean off the San Diego County coast last night at 12:41a. The group left the space station a month early due to a medical concern for one of the crew members. They’ll return to Johnson Space Center in Houston following a planned overnight hospital stay. https://thecoastnews.com/crew-11-safely-splashes-down-off-san-diego-county-coast/
A live performance venue in Old Town Temecula is now operating under its fourth name in a decade, all under the same ownership. Andy Doty has owned the space at 28636 Old Town Front Street, first under the name The Front Street Union, then The Lucky Stone Irish Pub, then Old Town Blues Club. He recently changed it to The Vibe, saying a blues song should be written about how “the blues don’t pay the bills.” The club began with 800 square feet of space. It’s now 1,800 square feet indoors and 1,600 feet of patio space outside with much improved utilities. He says there’s lots of musical talent in the area, having fled the high cost of living in LA, and working in local casinos. As a result, The Vibe is booking a lot more tribute bands. Doty says the biggest problem with Old Town Temecula is lack of parking. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2026/01/15/this-old-town-temecula-music-venue-changed-its-name-but-the-vibe-is-still-the-same/

The Dodgers have already scooped up the New York Mets’ closing pitcher, Edwin Diaz. Tucker’s only downside is that he’s only played 214 regular season games over the past two years due to injuries. He batted .266 with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs last season for Chicago. https://apnews.com/article/dodgers-kyle-tucker-3ae04131b75f5fc8a212b277d430cd56

The third annual San Diego Rodeo kicks off today at Petco Park amid a lawsuit over animal cruelty. At least two horses have been seriously injured or died in the two previous events. Just weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics, sports scientists wonder if figure skating has reached the limits of human performance. It’s been 3 ½ years since Ilia Malinin first landed a jump many had thought impossible – a quad axel – four full rotations beginning with a forward-facing entry. There are six main jumps in figure skating that have been standard since the early 1900s. The only thing that’s changed is the number of revolutions in them. Kurt Browning landed the first quad, a toe loop in 1988. Ten years later Timothy Goebel landed the first quad salchow. Now, Malinin’s quad axel. But experts say that is probably the limit. Five revolution jumps are not humanly possible. If one ever happens, it’ll be AI generated. Since the only thing left is showy innovation in moves other than the basic six main jumps and the rules of the International Skating Union don’t reward much in the way of points for anything besides the six, failure of such artistic innovation leaves skaters with more to lose than to gain by trying. Skaters and their coaches see the sport becoming stale as a result. The International Skating Union recently sanctioned back flips, which had been banned for their inherent danger. But they still don’t carry much weight in scoring. Skaters want more freedom to expand the artistic aspect of the sport to keep it alive. https://apnews.com/article/milan-cortina-olympics-figure-skating-03161624d221db4382ab6bf2618cfa21

Details became clearer yesterday afternoon about President Trump’s so-called Great Healthcare Plan to supplant Obamacare as Congress debates extending the credits from that previous act. The plan would codify deals Trump struck with major drug manufacturers to slash the cost of some prescription drugs by pegging them to prices charges for the same drugs overseas. More than a dozen drug makers agreed to lower prices for certain Medicaid prescriptions in exchange for a three-year exemption from tariffs. Some of the deals call for medicines to be sold at a discount on TrumpRX, the President’s direct-to-consumer platform. Trump said those prices will take effect later this month when the platform launches. The new plan would also “fund a cost-sharing reduction program” which the administration says will reduce most Obamacare plan premiums by more than 10%. Other components include requiring insurers to post coverage comparisons prominently and “in plain English” on their websites along with disclosure of overhead costs and claim denial rates. It would also require providers who accept Medicare of Medicaid “to publicly and prominently post pricing and fees to avoid surprise medical bills.” The White House plan makes no mention of extending ACA subsidies. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/15/trump-congress-aca-subsidies-health-care.html
With all parts of California officially out of drought and Sierra Nevada snowpack at 78% of normal for this time of year, both winter sports and statewide water supplies are looking fairly assured. Not so in Colorado. Vail Resorts is lowering its expected 2026 earnings after visits at its North American locations plunged 20% in the first two months of ski season, ended January 4. Vail Mountain this week reported its worst snowpack since it began keeping records in 1978 – just 4.4 inches. Snowfall at Rocky Mountain locations was 60% below historical averages. The company’s Western resorts were almost as bad at 50% below average. www.morningbrew.com

What is arguably California’s most scenic highway has reopened. California State Highway 1 along the Central coast is now completely open after consecutive landslides forced its closure for the past three years. Full reopening of the 90-mile section of Highway 1 through Big Sur happened yesterday around midday – three months ahead of schedule and exactly three years and a day after the first landslide that closed it. Caltrans used remote controlled bulldozers and excavators to safely remove hundreds of tons of debris from the steepest terrain. 4,600 steel bars were drilled into the slopes to patch together layers of hillside and reduce the risk of future slides. The isolated area which is home to fewer than 2k residents, is known for high cliffs, craggy beaches and panoramic views, and relies heavily on tourism. https://apnews.com/article/california-highway-1-big-sur-04cdcfba20529e9c5f888137a0ea9b4a
For those who choose to create their own music playlists rather than listen to Rez Radio, Spotify is raising its premium subscription rate a dollar to $13 a month beginning in February. Other subscription tiers will also increase by $1 to $2. History has shown that Spotify subscribers tend to go along with rate increases. www.morningbrew.com

- In 1990, Ike Turner was convicted of driving under the influence of cocaine and sentenced to four years in prison.
- In 1992, Eric Clapton recorded his “unplugged” session for MTV. The resulting album containing the songs “Tears in Heaven” and a slow, acoustic version of “Layla” earned six Grammy Awards including Record of the Year.
