BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks bounced back today.  The Dow gained 2.1% and is trading at an all-time high.  The S&P 500 rose 1.7%.  And the Nasdaq was up 2%.  Gold gained a similar percentage, up $97 on the Comex and trading at $4,986.50 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 98 cents at $64.27 a barrel.

The Trump administration has launched its TrumpRX website for discounted prescription drugs.  It is not a platform for buying meds, but rather a facilitator to point Americans to drugmakers’ direct-to-consumer websites.  It also provides coupons to use at pharmacies.  Over 40 drugs including weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy are represented.  All are priced no higher than what each manufacturer charges for that drug overseas.  TrumpRX is intended to show the administration is tackling the high cost of medications.  www.apnews.com

Could this be the beginning of crypto-winter?  With bitcoin plunging as much as 10% yesterday, falling below $70k for the first time since the 2024 election rally, some people are finally beginning to wonder if crypto currency is all it’s cracked up to be.  As bitcoin’s value fell yesterday (it rebounded slightly today), some investors were forced to sell their holdings as it declined, causing its value decline to accelerate.  Virtual coins are still viewed as risky, and risky isn’t good in the current turbulent stock market with tech stocks taking the biggest beating.  President Trump’s nomination of Kevin Warsh to head the Federal Reserve isn’t helping either since he’s perceived as likely to pursue policies that may hurt the value of crypto.  Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently suggested the federal government won’t bail out crypto.  And stalled regulatory efforts make it seem like the Trump administration is losing interest in what is no longer shiny and new – AI having taken over that spotlight.  With reality setting in, some people are wondering what bitcoin is actually useful for.  Crypto payments are usually made with stablecoins, not volatile tokens like bitcoin.  And it’s proving to not be a safe-haven asset, with investors still preferring precious metals.  All of that means there are fewer investors interested in buying the dip this time.  It’s been down before, as it was with the 2021 FTX fraud scandal.  But this time, bitcoin’s downturn could be long term.  www.morningbrew.com

Shares of Stellantis plunged 27% in European trading today after it announced it will take a $26b hit from a “business reset” and hinted it will follow other vehicle manufacturers in pulling back from electrification.  The maker of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and almost a dozen other international brands said it expects a mid-single digit increase in net revenue this year.  Stellantis will also invest $13b in U.S. operations over the next four years as it launches ten new products and cancels some unprofitable ones.  The infusion is expected to add 5k U.S. jobs.  Though the market reacted badly to today’s news, analysts say the clear direction and cleaning house bodes well for the company’s future.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/06/stellantis-reset-business-electric-vehicles.html

Beginning March 9, President Trump will finally get what he’s wanted for five and a half years – the ability to fire vast numbers of civil servants for any reason if they get in the way of his agendas.  A rule issued by the Office of Personnel Management on Friday ends job protections for many federal employees, making them at-will employees at Trump’s discretion.  Protections for civil servant jobs was intended to keep career federal employees safe from political whims.  Up to 50k positions could be reclassified into a new category called Schedule Policy/Career with those employees able to be fired at will.  The OPM received more than 40k comments during the public comment period about the new rule.  94% were opposed.  Critics say the new rule politicizes the civil service.  The administration says it weeds out poor performance and increases accountability. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/06/nx-s1-5704171/trump-fire-federal-employees-schedule-f

As you stock up for your Super Bowl party, don’t forget the avocadoes.  The cost of guacamole is the cheapest its been in decades thanks to low avocado prices.  If you don’t have your own tree, large avocadoes are on sale at most supermarkets for between 50 and 99 cents this week.  Overall, your supply costs are expected to be about 1.6% higher this Sunday than last year, according to a report by Wells Fargo.  Chicken wings are about 2.7% cheaper than last year.  Avocadoes cost 2.4% less.  Shrimp prices are up 8.1%.  Broccoli and cauliflower are up 4%.  But red bell peppers and carrots are down 3.1%.  Salsa is up 1.7%.  Beer and wine are between 0.5% and 1.3% higher.  https://www.kcra.com/article/super-bowl-party-food-costs-about-140-heres-how-to-save/70249413

Commercials are always an important part of Super Bowl broadcasts.  At $8m to $10m per 30 seconds, this year is no exception with companies creating new and one-off ads to put their best foot forward.  Come Near, the group that managed the “He Gets Us” religious campaign in the three previous Super Bowls is back with an ad titled “More”.  Most advertisers are playing it safe and avoiding controversy this year … no social or political messages.  Of those announced in advance, watch for 94-year old William Shatner in a goofy ad for Raisin Bran, a touching finding-lost-dogs ad for Ring cameras, Xfinity’s AI remake of Jurassic Park, Adrien Brody’s self-deprecating ad for TurboTax, Pepsi co-opting the Coca-Cola polar bears for a taste test, a celebrity-studded wedding reception kegger for Bud Light, and a humorous take on checking for prostate cancer.  Oh, and there’s a football game too. https://www.npr.org/2026/02/06/nx-s1-5697056/super-bowl-ads-2026-uber-eats-pepsi-doordash
