Redhawk Parkway south of Via Rio Temecula was briefly closed after a truck hit a fire hydrant yesterday morning.  The single-vehicle accident caused water to shoot across the roadway.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/truck-strikes-hydrant-temecula-amr-responds-scene

75-year old Lawrence Swain of Temecula has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash in US 95 near Needles two weeks ago.  He was driving alone near mile marker 25, just north of Vidal Junction when his vehicle rolled over for reasons still under investigation. https://patch.com/california/temecula/coroner-ids-temecula-man-fatal-rollover-crash-near-arizona-border

The Supreme Court yesterday sided with religious parents and teachers, voting 6-3 to block California state schools’ policies that restricted schools from notifying parents about a student’s gender identity change.  It’s a temporary “ban on outings”, favoring what religious parents say are their First Amendment rights to know if their children change pronouns or gender expression and overrides the state’s 2024 law designed to protect transgender students from harm or rejection at home.  It’s a significant victory for opponents of LGBTQ+ student privacy policies.  And it’s only temporary as the ultimate legal battle over the issue continues in lower courts.  https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/mar/02/us-supreme-court-california-trans-students-privacy-law#:~:text=California-,US%20supreme%20court%20blocks%20California%20privacy%20protections%20for%20trans%20students,Read%20more

The California Department of Food and Agriculture has declared a new citrus quarantine in San Diego County.  Two citrus trees in a residential part of Ramona tested positive for HLB, commonly referred to as citrus greening.  The bacterial disease causes bitter, misshapen fruit unsuitable for sale or eating, and eventually kills the tree.  San Diego County’s citrus crop is a $140m a year business.  More than 100 commercial growers and two commercial nurseries may be affected by this new quarantine.  This is in addition to existing HLB quarantines in Oceanside, Fallbrook, Valley Center and Rancho Bernardo. https://www.countynewscenter.com/state-declares-citrus-quarantine-in-ramona/

Caltrans will be closing all lanes of the 78 freeway east of I-15 tomorrow night and again Thursday night from 10p to 5a to resurface the roadway.  Eastbound lanes will be affected tomorrow night.  Westbound on Thursday night.  Major alternate roads that avoid the construction include El Norte Parkway, Broadway and West Valley Parkway.  https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4520299101488-overnight-sr-78-lane-closures-in-escondido-this-week

Experts say all markets are currently being driven by concerns that the war in Iran won’t be resolved as quickly as President Trump claims, but will instead widen and do more sustained damage to the economy.  https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-iran-energy-oil-trump-75edbda5b8fa3038b47f143cc16855f0

The Auto Club reports that the nationwide average retail price for a gallon of regular gas jumped 11 cents overnight to about $3.11.  They were already on the rise as refineries were in the process of switching over to summer blends of fuel.  https://apnews.com/article/iran-oil-gas-gallon-aaa-e2daee318b8e3e6a1124713909a410e4

Iranian drone strikes damaged three Amazon Web Services cloud computing facilities in the Middle East today.  Two of the data centers were in the United Arab Emirates.  The other was in Bahrain.  Unlike software disruptions, these physical attacks have caused only limited local disruption of services.  But they point out the computing industry’s vulnerability to military conflict.  Amazon Web Services hosts some of the world’s most-used online services, including computing infrastructure to governments, universities and business. https://apnews.com/article/amazon-aws-data-center-uae-iran-bahrain-71066b0a822c4cfd88b61e3fe79af917

A federal court yesterday rejected the Trump administration’s attempt to slow the process of refunding billions of dollars in tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court as illegal.  The federal Justice Department asked the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to hold off any decisions on tariff refunds for 90 days.  Judges refused the request and are expected to demand the details of the federal government’s plan for tariff refunds.  https://apnews.com/article/tariffs-trump-refunds-supreme-court-cc2ace8576e59d10034e7e525737539d

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Apple has launched a cheaper version of its iPhone 17.  The 17e is a slightly no-frills version that matches the older 16e on price, but with features the 16e didn’t have including wireless charging, twice as much storage, and a screen that is more resistant to scratches and better at reducing glare.  The iPhone 17e is priced at $599.  Both it and a new iPad Air will arrive in stores March 11.  www.morningbrew.com

Even as sales are slowing for electric vehicles, there’s some unexpectedly good news about them.  Fifteen years ago, when EVs were first hitting the roads, a lot of people worried about expensive battery replacements, preceded by battery packs losing efficiency, and thus, range.  EV batteries were intended to last longer than 12v starter batteries that everyone’s been used to replacing every six or so years.  The good news is that as the fleet of EVs on the road ages, data from those first tens of thousands of vehicles shows those expensive battery packs are lasting longer than expected.  The lithium-ion batteries age in two ways – by the calendar and by the number of charging cycles.  Like a pair of shoes, it was expected that you break in EV batteries, then they last until worn out.  And when they do wear out, it happens pretty fast.  But EV batteries have proven that the initial drop-off from brand new isn’t that much, and the end of life is taking longer than expected.  According to Cox Automotive, two to four-year old EVs coming off lease still have battery health scores up to 95% of their expected driving range.  Of 80k EVs tested, the average battery health is 92%.  Some of the oldest EVs don’t have modern technology to track such things, but based on owners voluntarily reporting to surveys by Recurrent, only 8 ½% of ten-year old EVs have ever had a battery pack replacement.  Of cars with 150k or more miles that have never had a battery replacement, they’re all getting at least 83% of their original mileage range per charge.     https://www.npr.org/2026/03/02/nx-s1-5706658/electric-vehicle-battery-lifespan

On this day in music history – March 3,

  • In 1966, Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay formed Buffalo Springfield.  They were among the first wave of new American groups following the 1964 British invasion led by The Beatles.  Their million-seller, “For What It’s Worth” became a political anthem for the late ‘60s.
  • In 1973, Slade’s “Cum On Feel the Noize” entered the British singles chart at #1 – the first act to do so since The Beatles.
  • Also in 1973 at that year’s Grammys, Harry Nilsson won Best Pop Vocal Performance for “Without You” – the first so-called power ballad.  Roberta Flack won Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”, a cover of a 1957 song she’d recorded in 1969.  It was on her first album but languished until Clint Eastwood used it for a love scene in his 1971 directorial debut, “Play Misty for Me”.
  • In 1984, one-hit-wonder Nena’s English-language version of “99 Red Balloons” began the first of three weeks at #1 in England.  It peaked at #2 in America.  The original German version got airplay on many alternative rock stations.
  • In 1990, Paul McCartney played the first of six sold-out nights at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.  The final night was carried live via closed circuit to major venues at ten other Japanese cities.
  • In 1995, Foo Fighters made their live debut at a benefit concert in Portland, Oregon.
  • In 1999, Oasis agreed to pay former drummer Tony McCarroll a lump sum of almost $1m for unpaid royalties.  He’d been fired from the band four years earlier.
  • In 2003, Ray Jackson sued Rod Stewart over the rights to his hit from 30 years earlier, “Maggie May”.  Jackson created the mandolin part at a 1971 recording session with Stewart for which he was paid 15 pounds Sterling.  He was not given songwriting credit.
  • In 2004, Elton John announced his plans to marry long-time partner David Furnish if new British laws then under consideration in Parliament allowed it.
  • In 2008, Beatles recording engineer Norman Smith passed at the age of 85.  He’d worked on every Beatles song recorded through 1965, went on to engineer Pink Floyd’s early albums and even had a hit single himself as Hurricane Smith in 1972 with “Oh Babe, What Would You Say?”, written by his wife, Eileen.
  • In 2012, guitarist Ronnie Montrose died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at age 64.  He’d been suffering from prostate cancer.

Born on this day …

  • In 1941, Mike Pender from The Searchers – the second group out of Liverpool to have a hit single in the U.S in the 1960s.
  • In 1944, Jance Garfat, bass player for Dr. Hook.
