Prosecutors in the federal case over rigged poker games that produced charges against NBA Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones say they expect to announce plea deals with 12 of the 31 defendants and will probably reach deals with nine more before the case goes to trial.  All the defendants were due in court today for a status hearing. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48093618/prosecutors-extend-formal-plea-agreements-poker-case

In the minors – The San Diego Clippers next game is March 11 hosting Rip City at Frontline Arena in Oceanside.

In college basketball – Unranked UCLA surprised #9 Nebraska 72-52.  Unranked TCU topped #10 Texas Tech 73-65.  Arizona State beat #14 Kansas 70-60.

In women’s NCAA – San Diego State beat Air Force 74-57.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls next game is tonight at San Jose.

In Major League Baseball Pre-Season – The Padres edged the White Sox 4-3.  The Dodgers beat Cleveland 5-4.  And the Angels prevailed 7-6 over Seattle.   All the SoCal teams have today off.  The regular season begins three weeks from today.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar has been suspended without pay by MLB for the 2026 season following his second positive test for a performance-enhancing drug.  Tests revealed testosterone that was not produced naturally in the player’s body.  An All-Star in 2024 when he was with the Padres but traded away in the off-season, Profar had been suspended for 80 games at the start of last season following a positive drug test.  At the time, he said he would never willingly take a banned substance, but took full responsibility and accepted that suspension.  Profar returned to the team on July 2 and finished the season with a .245 batting average, 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 80 games.  This latest suspension means he will also be ineligible for postseason and this year’s World Baseball Classic.  Profar is the seventh Major League player to ever be given a 162-game suspension.  A third failed test would mean a lifetime ban from baseball.  Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia is the only player ever to get that since drug testing with penalties began in 2004. https://apnews.com/article/profar-drug-suspension-braves-b60b2da421060606e45623b379db1aec?

In soccer – The San Diego Sockers face the Empire Strikers tomorrow at Toyota Arena in Ontario.

If you want to watch final qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup at a bargain price, go to Mexico.  Tickets went on sale for games March 26 and 31 in Guadalajara and Monterrey for between about $11 and $17.  Compare that with tickets for the World Cup semi-final and championship games in Arlington, Atlanta, Miami Gardens and East Rutherford priced between $900 and $8,680.  And those are just stadium seats, not luxury suites. https://apnews.com/article/world-cup-playoff-tickets-fifa-89689a8fc89c2e60e277e43b7652eabb

In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals next game isn’t until March 14 at Saskatchewan.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gained back most of yesterday’s losses.  The Dow was up 6 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was up almost 1%.  And the Nasdaq gained 1.6%.  Gold was up $15.40 at $5,139.30 an ounce on the Comex.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained another 10 cents, trading at $74.68 a barrel.

Target CEO Michael Fiddelke told investors yesterday that the retailer plans to refocus on the needs of “busy families” and stop trying to be everything to everyone.  He said Target will invest an additional $1b in its supply chain, technology and stores including local staffing.  This, after it cut 1,800 corporate jobs in October.  The announcement about more baby care and groceries and less home décor and apparel came after Fiddelke reported Target’s fourth straight quarter of declining store and online traffic along with even lower than expected revenue.  The bright side was earnings that actually beat estimates and a 30% growth in Target’s same-day delivery service which competes directly with Amazon and Walmart.  Target is projecting 2% net growth for this fiscal year. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/04/target-earnings-investor-day-ceo-michael-fiddelke-merchandise-plans.html

On this day in music history – March 4,

  • 1963, the Beach Boys released “Surfin’ U.S.A.” with lyrics by Brian Wilson set to the tune of Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen”.  Billboard magazine ranked it the #1 song for the year of 1963.
  • 1966, The London Evening Standard first published John Lennon’s quote that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ.  Brits let it slide.  But when republished in America a few months later, angry Christian activists organized protests, record burnings, and forced radio stations to ban Beatle records.
  • In 1967, The Rolling Stones were at the top of the charts with their fourth #1 hit, “Ruby Tuesday”.  It was originally released as the B side to “Let’s Spend the Night Together”.  But when prudish radio stations began banning that song, Tuesday became the A-side.

  • In 2009, Britney Spears kicked off a world tour in New Orleans – her first concert tour in five years.
  • In 2015, Daryl Hall and John Oates sued cereal maker Early Bird Foods over the use of the name Haulin’ Oates (with the G on Hauling dropped) for their maple syrup granola bars.  The duo based their trademark infringement case on the company’s creation of a phonetic play on words using the band’s well-known name.
