As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down significantly. The Dow fell 2.1%. The S&P 500 was down 1 ¼%. And the Nasdaq was off by 1.2%. The traditional safe haven, gold was down as well, trading $42.90 lower on the Comex at $5,091.80 an ounce. With the war in Iran halting virtually all Middle East oil, the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude futures shot up $6 to $80.69 a barrel. US natural gas and diesel futures rose 2.6% and 10% respectively as supplies from the Middle East are shut off. The US Dollar index is up 1.7% this week as global investors seek a safe haven.
What seems to be worrying investors the most today is uncertainty over how long the Iran war will last and how much more of the world will be pulled into it. Wall Street’s fear gauge, the VIX is up 18%. Iran has made strikes on Cypress, where US bases are located. Cypress is a member of the UN, which calls for members to stand behind it. https://www.cnn.com/2026/03/05/investing/us-stocks-oil-iran
The House of Representatives today takes up the issue of President Trump’s military authority to declare and wage war with Iran based on Constitutional limits. Article I of the Constitution says that Congress has the power to declare war. Article II states that the President is the “commander in chief of the Army and Navy.” Not since World War II has Congress declared an official state of war. Yet since then, the US has had wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan along with other conflicts. The Senate has already voted down a Democratic measure to limit Trump in the US-Israeli war against Iran. www.apnews.com
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are taking another crack at full funding for Homeland Security, citing the Iran war for the need to get a budget for the one department that got only temporary funding in the last budget bill. https://apnews.com/article/iran-homeland-security-funding-32c81b70baf9971cab6f4f0501df9dc7
A federal judge at the US Court of International Trade in New York ruled yesterday through a test case that companies that paid tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court last month are due refunds. Judge Richard Eaton says he alone will hear cases pertaining to those illegally collected tariffs, giving some clarity to a process left up in the air by the Supreme Court. The federal government collected more than $130b of now-defunct tariffs and could ultimately be on the hook for refunds worth $175b. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariff-refunds-09cd60a170d01d8d62739ab13086ff9e
