The Murrieta City Council this week approved a major increase in Transportation Uniform Mitigation Fees which contribute to street and highway construction to keep up with housing development in the region. It’s been several years since the fees in Murrieta have been increased. The increase just approved amounts to over $5k for each new single-family home and over $1k per multi-family unit. That’s about a 50% increase. https://myvalleynews.com/blog/2025/02/28/murrieta-council-approves-tumf-fees-innovation-expansion/

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said today that how the US economy responds to new Trump administration policies including tariffs will determine the Fed’s reaction. If there are expectations of rising inflation, the Fed could reverse its plans for interest rate cuts and once again raise rates. He emphasized that the decision won’t be made on the results of tariffs alone. Growth, employment and other factors matter as well. Bottom line, Powell says the economy is currently in a good place. https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/us-jobs-report-february-2025/index.html
Speaking of jobs, 151k were added last month according to the latest Labor Department report. Economists had forecast 160k new jobs. The unemployment rate held steady at a predicted 4%. https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/us-jobs-report-february-2025/index.html
Today is the deadline for federal agencies to justify their use of ten large consulting companies to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). These companies include Booz Allen Hamilton, General Dynamics, Accenture, and CGI Federal. 98% of Booz Allen’s $11b annual revenue is from federal contracts including operating national park campsite reservations and developing cybersecurity for the Defense Department. Its stock has plunged 30% since January. Accenture and General Dynamics both worked on the botched rollout of the latest student aid application system update. CGI Federal was part of the botched initial Obamacare rollout in 2013. According to the Government Accountability Office, federal agencies spent $500b on consulting contracts from 2019 through 2023. Almost half of it was spent by the Department of Defense, which has barely been touched by DOGE so far. www.morningbrew.com

If you’re traveling to Canada, don’t plan on ordering a Jack and Coke. As the tariff war ramps up, officials in Ontario, British Columbia and other provinces are urging liquor stores to stop importing US spirits and pull existing supplies from shelves. In an earnings call Wednesday, CEO of Jack Daniels parent company, Brown-Foreman called the move a “disproportionate” reaction to tariffs and said Canada only accounts for 1% of his company’s sales. www.morningbrew.com
Wendy’s is giving the Frosty a makeover. For decades, it’s been available in just vanilla and chocolate plus occasional special limited-time flavors. The fast food company announced yesterday that it is rolling out options including Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions. The first allows adding flavored sauces. The latter are mix-ins. It didn’t say what flavors would be or when they’d be available. The current Girl Scouts Thin Mint Frosty offers a hint of what’s to come. The fast food sector as a whole has fallen on hard times with customers showing little brand loyalty. Chains are looking for ways to offer either deals or unique destination-menu options. https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/07/food/wendys-frosty-makeover/index.html
The Big Bear Lake eagles, Jackie and Shadow now have three chicks in the nest and they’re busy protecting them from up to ten inches of fresh snow. Their third egg this season hatched yesterday.
On this day in music history – March 7,
- 1962, The Beatles recorded their first radio appearance for the BBC at a theater in Manchester.
- In 1965, a female fan at a Rolling Stones concert at a different Manchester theater fell from the balcony during the show. The crowd below cushioned her fall and she escaped with only a few broken teeth.
- In 1966, Brian Wilson released “Caroline No”, the first solo single by a member of The Beach Boys. First written as “Carol I Know”, it also appeared as the final track on The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” album.
- On the same day, Tina Turner recorded her vocal for “River Deep Mountain High”, which went to #3 in England, but stalled at #88 in the U.S. Well aware of Ike Turner’s controlling attitude in the studio, producer Phil Spector wrote the contract so that the song and album would be credited to Ike & Tina Turner, but Ike was paid $20k to stay away from the studio and only Tina’s vocals would be used on the record. Session musicians on the song included Leon Russell on keyboards, Glen Campbell on guitar, and Hal Blaine on drums. Darlene Love always claimed the song was supposed to be hers. But Spector gave it to Turner.
- In 1969, Led Zeppelin appeared at a London club with such a small stage that only John Bonham’s drums could fit on it. The rest of the band played on the dance floor amongst patrons.
- In 1970, actor Lee Marvin had the #1 hit on the UK singles chart with “Wand’rin Star” from the movie, “Paint Your Wagon”.
- Meanwhile on the same day here in the U.S., Simon and Garfunkel, who’d already split by then began the first of ten weeks at #1 with “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
- In 1973, “Dueling Banjos”, the Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel song from the movie, “Deliverance” became one of the rare instrumentals to be awarded a gold record. It peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.
- In 1975, David Bowie released his 9th studio album, “Young Americans”. It featured the song, “Fame”, co-written by John Lennon, which became Bowie’s first #1 hit in America.
- In 1980, the film biography of country music star, Loretta Lynn, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” opened in theaters. It earned Sissy Spacek an Oscar for her portrayal of Lynn and was a huge boost for the careers of Tommy Lee Jones who played her husband and Beverly D’Angelo who played Patsy Cline. Both actresses did their own singing in the movie.
- In 1987, The Beastie Boys became the first rap act to have a #1 album with their debut, “Licensed to Ill”.
- In 2009, rapper Coolio was charged with drug possession after being arrested at LA International Airport.
- In 2012, sales of albums by The Monkees soared following the death of singer Davy Jones. Their Best Of album re-entered the album chart at #20. Since then, both Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith have passed. Only Mickey Dolenz is left.
Born on this day …
- In 1944, singer/songwriter Townes Van Zandt, whose songs have been covered by Bob Dylan, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle, Willy Nelson, and Merle Haggard.
- In 1945, Arthur Lee, guitarist, songwriter and lead singer with Love.
- Also in 1945, Chris White, bass player with The Zombies
- In 1946, Matthew Fisher from Procol Harum and Peter Wolf, lead singer with the J. Geils Band
