LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Potentially the most productive set of storms so far this year are on the way beginning today. The county and Cal Fire are offering driving tips and free sandbags to residents and businesses in unincorporated areas. Pala tribal members and community residents can get bags and sand at the Pala Fire Station on Lilac Extension. Avoid driving in the heaviest downpours. But if you must, slow down and turn on your headlights to make it easier for other drivers to see you. Drive closer to the center of the road to avoid puddles near the shoulder and the chance of hydroplaning. Test your brakes after splashing through deep water before you actually need them. Turn around, down drown. Never drive through an area where the water is so deep you can’t see the pavement. Give vehicles in front of you extra distance. The spray they kick up hampers your vision and you will need more room to stop on wet roads. Fire stations in North County offering free sand and bags include De Luz Fire Station #16 at 39431 De Luz Road, Pala Mesa Fire Station #4 off Old Highway 395 north of Highway 76. Rincon Fire Station #70 on Highway 76 in Pauma Valley, Valley Center Fire Station #2 on Lake Wohlford Road, Sunshine Summit Fire Station #59 on Highway 79 west of Warner Springs, and Palomar Mountain Fire Station #79 on Crestline Road. Bags only are available at stations in Warner Springs, Borrego Springs, Ocotillo Wells, and the Miller Fire Station #15 on W. Lilac Road. https://www.countynewscenter.com/the-rain-is-coming-here-are-driving-tips-and-sandbag-locations/

Next year’s budget will be made public May 1 when you can review and share your thoughts online at the same website. https://www.countynewscenter.com/help-shape-the-countys-budget/
San Diego County supervisors today are considering an unsafe camping ordinance to try to prevent wildfires caused by homeless encampments in unincorporated county areas. Several recent fires have been found to have started in such encampments. The county currently uses a “services first” approach to connect homeless people with shelter, food, and where needed, substance abuse and mental health treatment. At issue is modifying existing ordinances to immediately eliminate the threat of out-of-control campfires in times of weather emergency. The board voted 4-0 last month to advance a proposal authored by 5th district Supervisor, Jim Desmond to clear encampments during Red Flag, or high fire warnings. https://www.kpbs.org/news/politics/2025/03/11/county-supervisors-to-consider-unsafe-camping-ban-to-prevent-wildfires

Airlines say ticket sales are down as the result of two recent crashes which have escalated the public’s fear of flying. Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian made that pronouncement this morning. He didn’t say how much ticket sales have slowed. But yesterday, Delta cut its expected revenue growth expectations for the first quarter by half. The two crashes were among the worst in North America in 25 years. Bastien pointed out, that’s a whole generation of people traveling that didn’t realize these things can happen. Uncertainty about the economy and falling consumer confidence are also hurting airlines. https://www.wlfi.com/news/fear-of-flying-is-pushing-ticket-sales-down-in-the-wake-of-multiple-crashes-airlines/article_284cc2b8-79eb-59fc-bfea-eead34dbabd7.html

Southwest Airlines announced today that it will begin charging a fee to check baggage unless you’ve reached the upper tiers of its rewards program, bought a business class ticket, or have a Southwest credit card. Flying with up to two free checked bags was a perk that differentiated Southwest from the other budget airlines. It was not announced what the new baggage fee would be, but it will begin with flights booked on May 28. Last year, Southwest announced it would do away with open seating – a 50-year tradition with the Dallas-based airline. Assigned seating on Southwest is expected to begin next year. https://apnews.com/article/southwest-airlines-checked-bags-fee-free-463d2b0e1176fed222a11cf244648f1a
40,500 residents of Greenland who are eligible to do so are voting today with independence a key campaign theme. The former Danish colony and territory of Denmark since 1953 has had the right to declare independence since 2009, but hasn’t out of concern living standards would fall without economic support from Denmark. President Trump has said he wants control of the mineral-rich country because it’s vital to US security. Greenland is a huge island, but has a total of only about 57k residents. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/greenland-election-tests-independence-ambitions-us-interest-looms-2025-03-11/
