U.S. District Judge William Alsup yesterday found the firings in the departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, the Interior and the Treasury didn’t follow federal law and required immediate offers of reinstatement be sent. The order from the San Francisco-based judge came in a lawsuit filed by a coalition of labor unions and organizations as the Republican administration moves to dramatically downsize the federal workforce. https://patch.com/california/san-francisco/ca-judge-orders-trump-reinstate-workers-let-go-mass-firings

Treasury yields fell as the tariff war intensified and the Senate refused the House’s bill to avert a government shutdown. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer announced yesterday that most Democratic Senators will not support the House bill to fund the federal government through September. The House of Representatives is now on recess until March 24. So, it’s up to the Senate to decide whether or not the government will be funded after tomorrow. Although Republicans hold a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, 60 votes are required to support the spending bill which narrowly passed the House Tuesday on a 217-213 vote. https://nypost.com/2025/03/12/us-news/government-shutdown-likely-friday-night-after-schumer-says-senate-dems-will-block-gop-funding-bill/
The President’s latest tariff threat is a 200% tax on European alcohol in response to the European Union’s retaliation against the 25% US tariff on European aluminum and steel which went into effect yesterday. The EU announced tariffs on $28b worth of a wide variety of US goods including agricultural products and bourbon. On his Truth Social Account, President Trump called the EU “the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the world.” According to the president and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the US, the US-EU spirits sector had been a model of fair and reciprocal trade with no tariffs on either side since 1997. https://www.npr.org/2025/03/13/nx-s1-5327141/trump-european-alcohol-tariff
Walmart is using its size as the world’s largest retailer to mitigate the effect of tariffs on Chinese goods. It’s been predicted that tariffs on foreign-sourced goods will ultimately result in higher prices for US consumers. Walmart has retail business in China, but it’s less than 3% of its total sales. They’re also heavily invested in a Chinese supply chain, having committed six years ago to either build or upgrade at least ten logistics centers in that country over the next decade or two. 60% of Walmart’s shipments for US consumption came from China in 2023. Walmart has historically had strong bargaining power over its Chinese suppliers and has usually gotten its way. All of that was taken into a meeting Tuesday between Walmart executives and China’s Ministry of Commerce in which China took exception to the retailer pressuring local suppliers to absorb the tariff hikes. The Wall Street Journal reported that Walmart offered to “find ways to avoid damaging the interests of the parties involved.” Walmart had no official comment. https://www.axios.com/2025/03/12/trump-tariffs-walmart-china?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=AxiosNews/magazine/Donald+Trump

A new Reuters poll finds most Americans think President Trump is too closely aligned with Russia. It also revealed they don’t like his expansionist agenda as he talks about acquiring Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal. 56% say he’s too close to Moscow – a position that has traditional US allies thinking they may need to plan their own defenses and not count on help from the US. Only 1% of those surveyed think expanding US territories should be an administration priority. 61% think the priority should be fighting inflation, and 13% say Trump should focus on shrinking the size of federal government. 80% are against making Canada the 51st state. 69% say the US should not take over Greenland. 60% say we should not take over the Panama Canal, which we owned until 1979 and controlled until 1999. Yet amid all this, the President’s approval rating has held steady at 44% for the past several weeks. That’s higher than either he or Joe Biden’s rating as 45th and 46th Presidents. The survey of almost 1,500 Americans was taken last week. The results were closely aligned with the stated political party of the respondents. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/americans-worry-trump-too-closely-aligned-with-russia-reutersipsos-poll-finds-2025-03-13/

- In 2006, the surviving Sex Pistols refused to attend their own induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also inducted were Blondie, Black Sabbath and Herb Alpert, whose A&M Records had 29-years earlier, cancelled the Sex Pistols recording contract after six days with the label.
- In 2014, two people were killed and 23 injured when a drunk driver crashed through barricades at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. Two more later died at the hospital.
