Orange County transit officials announced this week they plan to do additional work along the coastal rail tracks at San Clemente where landslides have suspended passenger rail service to San Diego for months at a time over the past several years. They applied for a permit Monday with the California Coastal Commission for expedited work on four projects including Mariposa Point, where a slow-moving slide triggered by winter rains closed the tracks for three months one year ago. Slides since then once again are threatening the tracks, though there have been no additional closures. Debris and mud is nearing the top of a temporary 12-foot wall. Plans in this latest permit request include replenishing beach sand and reinforcing the revetment as well as building a permanent catchment wall and restoration of a popular pedestrian trail destroyed by last year’s slides. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/04/02/more-work-planned-for-san-clementes-railroad-link-with-san-diego/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were plunging in reaction to the specifics of Trump’s tariffs, announced yesterday. The Dow fell 2.8%. The S&P 500 was down 3 ¾% with over 100 of the stocks in the S&P down more than 10%. The Nasdaq plunged almost 5%. Gold futures took a dive as well, with the precious metal trading down $34.70 on the Comex at $3,131.50 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell more than 7%, or $5.08 to $66.63 a barrel. Ten-year Treasury note yields dropped below 4% for the first time this year.
President Trump yesterday announced elevated tariff rates on countries that run trade surpluses with the U.S. while imposing a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries. He justified it as a response to an economic emergency. The 10% rate goes into effect Saturday. The tariffs are scheduled to be collected beginning April 9. Trump made it clear the new tariffs are reciprocal and only make up for other countries’ tariffs on our exports to them. Nevertheless, longtime trading partners are preparing their own countermeasures which will escalate the now all-out trade war. Canada and Mexico will not face higher rates on what they’re already being charged by the Trump administration in an effort to stop illegal immigration and drug smuggling. Goods that comply with the North American free trade agreement are excluded from new tariffs. But the 20% charged on imports from China due to its role in the fentanyl problem will be added to the 34% tariff on that country announced yesterday. There are exceptions for some products. But he also removed the protection from tariffs on imports from China worth $800 or less. The President says his actions will bring in hundreds of billions of dollars in new revenue to the U.S. government and restore fairness to global trade. So far, President Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” has only liberated a lot of value from stocks and commodities markets as well as cause the U.S. dollar to fall as compared with other currencies. The dollar is normally considered a “safe haven” in uncertain economic times. It’s been falling against major foreign currencies recently and that fall accelerated today. Economists at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, say tariffs on U.S. imports haven’t been this high since the Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930, which incited a global trade war and deepened the Great Depression. If you’re a fan of Ferris Bueller, you no doubt remember Ben Stein teaching that to his extremely bored students. President Trump is doing all of this under the 1977 International Emergency Powers Act, which allows him to bypass Congress. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-liberation-day-2a031b3c16120a5672a6ddd01da09933 https://www.reuters.com/markets/currencies/trumps-tariffs-dull-dollars-safe-haven-sheen-2025-04-03/
Because of the 10% across-the-board tariff on imports, anything that comes from another country is likely to become more expensive in the next few weeks and months as U.S. companies pass the cost on to retail customers. Apple, for example produces almost all of its phones in China, which is getting a 34% tariff beginning April 9. But it’s possible that there could be exemptions for companies, like Apple that promise to build more factories in the U.S. Imported vehicles will face the 10% universal tariff on top of previously announced 25% tariffs, hiking prices $2,500 to $5,000 on even the lowest-priced cars and up to $20k on some imported models. Even vehicles assembled in the U.S. will be affected if parts are sourced from other countries – as they are for almost all vehicles. Most apparel sold at stores like Target and Walmart is made overseas with China, Vietnam and Bangladesh among the biggest exporters. Yesterday’s reciprocal tariffs against them are 34%, 46% and 37% respectively. A third or more of furniture sold in the U.S. is made in other countries. Top exporters in that sector include China and Vietnam. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/which-products-most-affected-tariffs/
Conagra Brands, the maker of Hunts, Chef Boyardee, Birds Eye, Banquet and other supermarket brands, says it may have to hike prices to offset tariffs on ingredients that can’t reasonably be sourced domestically, like cocoa, olive and palm oils, and a type of steel used for its canned products. The Chicago-based food company says it can’t absorb higher costs due to tariffs and maintain margins that allow it to continue to invest in business and new products. https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/hunts-tomato-maker-conagra-may-hike-prices-offset-tariffs-ceo-says-2025-04-03/
