A husband and wife pleaded not guilty yesterday to exploiting Filipino immigrant workers at two Escondido senior care facilities. Rolando Solancho Corpuz and Maria Elsabel Sio Corpuz were arraigned on charges of labor trafficking and wage theft, and released on $300k bail. One worker alleges having been paid less than $7 per hour, working around the clock six to seven days a week, living in a patient’s room administering medications and injections with no training or certification. After withholding so-called legal fees and paying out just a small fraction of wages owed, a Department of Industrial Relations audit shows that worker is owned more than $175k in back wages. Two other workers came forward as well. The state has since stepped in to take over care of 20 seniors living at the Rose Garden Vista and Rose Garden Capo homes in Escondido. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/escondido-couple-charged-trafficking-wage-theft-senior-care-north-county/509-d1e99ba5-2182-413e-b73e-48f9e2a9cac2

Today’s jobs report from the Labor Department showed American employers adding 178k new jobs last month. That’s about three times as many as economists expected and a huge turnaround from February’s loss of 133k jobs. New jobs were concentrated in the health care and social assistance categories. The unemployment rate dipped a tenth to 4.3%, in part because fewer people were looking for work. In spite of this month’s new jobs added, the percentage of Americans in the labor force dropped to 61.9% last month – the lowest it’s been since November 2021. Wages were up 2 tenths of a percent in March. That’s an annual rate of 3.5% – the smallest gain since May 2021. https://apnews.com/article/jobs-unemployment-economy-trump-war-iran-oil-01c14a0e7ecbfb65925ba66c530f0834
President Trump issued an Executive Order yesterday that could initiate long-threatened tariffs on certain pharmaceuticals of up to 100%. It would affect companies that have not signed a “most favored nation” pricing deal and are actively building manufacturing facilities in the U.S. A senior administration official said companies still have between four and six months before the 100% tariffs kick in. According to a White House insider, 17 pricing deals have been reached, with 13 of them now signed. No word on what companies or drugs those deals affect. Yesterday’s executive order came on the 1-year anniversary of Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” when he introduced import taxes on nearly every country in the world. Those Liberation Day tariffs were overturned by the Supreme Court in February. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-pharmaceutical-drugs-59ed7821faa5b52e2752c09edbbbf0ca
Some companies are still dealing with the fallout from Liberation Day and its resulting trade war, and it has reshaped how companies, particularly those in retail and autos are modeling economic and policy risk. For one thing, with tariffs and government calls for “Made in America” constantly changing, companies aren’t moving as swiftly as they risk missing a moving target. As a result, a supply chain expert with AlixPartners says overall imports into the U.S. last year were actually higher than in 2024. But that could be due in part to companies pulling forward inventory in the first few months of last year. The retail industry has been disproportionately affected by tariffs, especially smaller businesses. The key is diversification among source countries. Home Deport for example, has a limit of 10% of the company’s purchases coming from any one country outside of the U.S. More than half of what it sells is produced in the U.S. Tariffs cost General Motors $3.1b in 2025. But that’s about 10% less than expected and the company says re-stacking of how tariffs are applied should result in less tariff expense this year. International automakers have announced plans to increase domestic manufacturing and even export vehicles made here to Japan to appease the Trump administration. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/03/trump-tariffs-trade-war-impact.html
Amazon is implementing a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on third-party sellers in the U.S. and Canada who use its fulfillment services. This surcharge is temporary and is being introduced to offset rising operating costs due to increased fuel prices. The surcharge goes into effect April 17. (Digiday)
With fuel prices soaring, commercial air fares haven’t gone up by much. But they will be as current contracts between airlines and supplier expire. www.marketwatch.com
