LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Valley Center High School Principal Nicole Clymer sent a letter to parents yesterday regarding Tuesday’s campus lockdown set in motion by a potential threat image circulating on social media.  Sheriffs deputies did a search of the campus and determined there was no credible threat.  The lockdown was lifted and students were released just before 3:30p.  https://www.facebook.com/valleycenter

The driver who was killed when her Acura rolled over at Betsworth and Lilac Roads in Valley Center on Sunday has been identified as 43-year-old Rachquel Alana Anderson of Valley Center.  Her car collided with a Ford pickup at the intersection and traveled up an embankment before overturning, ejecting the driver.  https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/driver-identified-in-lilac-rd-fatality/

San Diego County health officials are advising people not to eat locally harvested shellfish that wasn’t purchased from a state-certified commercial dealer or harvester.  Dangerous levels of domoic acid have been detected in locally harvested mussels.  The toxin can cause illness or death in humans and cooking does not destroy it.  Symptoms of amnesic shellfish poisoning can appear and usually involve nausea, cramps, headache and dizziness within 30 minutes to 24 hours after eating.  Shellfish at local markets and restaurants is safe because it comes only from state-certified sources. https://www.countynewscenter.com/county-is-warning-the-public-not-to-eat-locally-harvested-shellfish/

Construction is finally underway for the new Albertsons shopping center at Native Oaks Village in Valley Center.  This is the property that was formerly known as Liberty Bell Plaza before being taken over by the San Pasqual tribe’s economic development division.  Groundbreaking was last October.  But county permitting, weather, and necessary design changes delayed the start of construction.  A gas station will be the first building completed.  The full shopping center is expected to be open in the Fall of 2026. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/albertsons-still-moving-forward-says-tribe/

Carlsbad’s Planning Commission gave its approval yesterday for a four-story mixed-use development in the downtown village area in spite of there being no parking provided for the five retail tenants and two office suites in the building.  The project includes 23 apartments and is at the north end of Roosevelt Street near Laguna Drive.  A two-story commercial building now on the half-acre site will be demolished.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/04/03/mixed-use-carlsbad-project-gets-thumbs-up-despite-parking-concerns/

Four space tourists aboard a chartered SpaceX flight splashed down off the coast of Oceanside today.  A sonic boom from the Dragon capsule’s atmosphere re-entry could be heard in many parts of North County.  The flight was chartered by bitcoin investor Chun Wang, who declined to say what he paid for the 3 ½ day voyage.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/dragon-spacecraft-from-spacex-splashes-down-off-oceanside-coast-post-4-day-mission

SPORTS

In the NBA – Golden State, led by Steph Curry’s 37 points beat the Lakers 123-116 last night.  Other winners were Orlando, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Memphis, and Portland.  The playoffs begin two weeks from tomorrow.

In college hoops – At last night’s NIT championship game, UC Irvine missed a potential winning shot at the buzzer, losing in overtime to Chattanooga 85-84.  In the College Basketball Crown second round, Villanova eliminated USC 60-59.  And UCF topped Cincinnati 88-80.  The semifinals are Saturday in Las Vegas.  No games tonight.  The NCAA Final Four play tomorrow in San Antonio on CBS with Florida at Auburn at 3p and Houston at Duke at 6p.  All four teams were top seeds in this year’s tournament.

In the NHL – With two weeks left in the regular season, there were nine games last night.  Calgary beat the visiting Ducks 4-1, ending Anaheim’s playoff hopes for this season.  The Kings moved closer to clinching a playoff berth, beating Utah 4-2.  Other winners were Montreal, Ottawa, Colorado, St. Louis, Dallas, Winnipeg and Edmonton.  The NHL playoffs begin April 19 – same day as the NBA playoffs.

In minor league hockey – The San Diego Gulls next game is tonight at Iowa.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres, Dodgers and Angels all had yesterday off.  Just five games in the league.  The winners were Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Milwaukee and the Yankees.  The Padres begin a road trip in Chicago where the first game against the Cubs is already underway.  The Dodgers are in Philadelphia to begin a weekend series this evening.  The Angels home opener is tonight hosting Cleveland.

Cincinnati set an obscure and dubious record with yesterday’s loss to Milwaukee, becoming only the second team in over a century to lose three straight games by a score of 1-0.  The Phillies did it in 1960.  The three losses followed a 14-3 Reds blowout over Texas on Monday. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44525969/reds-1st-1960-lose-3-straight-1-0

In Major League Soccer – Tomorrow, San Diego hosts Seattle, the LA Galaxy play Real Salt Lake in Utah, and LAFC is at Houston.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks continued their Liberation Day plunge.  The Dow was down another 4%.  The S&P 500 fell 4 ¾%.  And the Nasdaq was off by 4.8%.  Gold, which is normally a safe haven when stocks are down, plunged $71.70 an ounce to $3,050. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures dropped almost 8%, or $5.20 a barrel to $61.75.

Stocks moving the most today included Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, Boeing, DuPont, Intel, Nike, Affirm and others.  The U.S. stock market has now lost $9.6 trillion dollars in valuation since Inauguration Day. www.marketwatch.com

China wasted no time in retaliating against tariffs announced Tuesday by President Trump.  They’ve imposed a matching 34% reciprocal tariff on imports from the U.S.  www.cnn.com/business

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell says Tuesday’s larger than expected tariffs are likely to boost inflation and slow growth, but that the Fed will hold off on any changes in interest rates until some of the dust settles.  That, in spite of President Trump today saying it’s the “perfect time” for the Fed to cut interest rates.  https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-04/powell-signals-fed-would-respond-to-persistent-inflation-shock

One good piece of news that’s largely been overshadowed by the tariff trade war – the U.S. economy added far more jobs in March than expected.  140k new jobs had been expected.  Instead, we got 228k – almost twice the number added in February.  All that was before Liberation Day.  So, global market analysts say labor will be more uncertain this month.  Unemployment ticked up a tenth of a percent to 4.2%.  That’s most likely a reflection of more people once again joining the search for work. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/march-2025-jobs-report-whos-hiring-firing-trump-layoffs-economy-rcna198645

President Trump today signed an executive order to keep TikTok operating in the U.S. for another 75 days to give his administration time to broker a deal to have it taken over by an American group.  Walmart is now interested in joining one of the potential ownership groups.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/04/trump-tiktok/

KB Homes has unveiled what it says is its first “wildfire resilient” community north of Escondido, with structures hardened against three major sources of ignition during a fire.  The homes are priced at one million and up.  The 64 single family homes have covered gutters, enclosed eaves, non-combustible siding including stucco and fiber cement, tempered glass windows and non-combustible patios, doors and roofing.  All fencing in the neighborhood is metal and low-combustible vegetation is at least five feet from the homes.  Some of the homes have already been built with up to a third already sold.  KB says it’s a test for them in building new developments that take into account wildfire danger in California.  https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/business/money-report/kb-home-unveils-its-first-fire-resilient-community-in-southern-california/3663773/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend in movies theaters, Jason Momoa and Jack Black star in “A Minecraft Movie”.  Naomi Watts and Bill Murray star in the drama, “The Friend”.  And 1987 Oakland culture is celebrated in “Freaky Tales”.  Also, the comedy “Hell of a Summer” opens in limited release. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/april/2025?view=list

A spokesperson for the national insurance trade association, the Insurance Information Institute says the recently-updated state wildfire maps, which show far more areas in the danger and high-danger zones than before will not cause already high insurance rates to increase further.  Zones at risk under the new map increased 469%.  But insurance companies use their own maps or rely on private providers and don’t use Cal Fire maps.  New regulations will kick in once municipalities adopt the new Cal Fire maps, including mandatory disclosure to buyers of a home being in a high or very-high fire zone as well as inspections for defensible space.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/04/states-new-fire-maps-wont-push-up-insurance-rates-industry-says/

A major anti-Trump protest is planned for downtown San Diego tomorrow as part of the nationwide “Hands Off!” movement.  In what is expected to be the largest single-day protest since President Trump took office for his second term, protesters will rally against administration policies including the handling of Social Security benefits, layoffs in the federal workforce, anti-immigration policies, attacks on transgender people, and attacks on consumer protections.  It’ll happen in Civic Center Plaza outside City Hall on 3rd Avenue from noon to 3p.  More than 1,100 associated rallies, events and meetings are scheduled tomorrow in all 50 states.  Others locally tomorrow include Encinitas, Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, and Oceanside.  The Hands Off! Website calls tomorrow “a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history.” https://www.axios.com/local/san-diego/2025/04/03/trump-resistance-rally-hands-off-protest-downtown

On this day in music history – April 4,

  • 1956, Elvis Presley performed the first of two shows at the old San Diego Arena at 8th and Harbor.  It was one of the largest venues he’d ever played, holding almost 6k screaming fans.  The night before, he’d performed for “The Milton Berle Show” on board the aircraft carrier USS Hancock at San Diego’s 28th Street Naval Station.  With plans to return to San Diego for another show in the summer, Police Chief Elmer Jansen said if he did and performed his on-stage gyrations like the first time, he’d be arrested for disorderly conduct.
  • In 1960, RCA Victor Records announced it would now release all new pop singles in both mono and stereo – the first label to do so.  Elvis Presley’s “Stuck on You” was the first mono and stereo simultaneous release.
  • In 1964, The Beatles held all of the top five spots on the singles chart that week, with “Please Please Me” at #5, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” at #4, “Roll Over Beethoven” at #3, “Love Me Do” at #2, and “Can’t Buy Me Love” at #1.  They also had nine other singles on the chart that week, making a total of 14 of that week’s Hot 100 all by the Fab Four, as they’d come to be known by the media.  That’s never happened before or since.
  • In 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were at #1 on the album chart with “Déjà vu”, featuring the hit singles, “Our House”, “Teach Your Children”, and “Woodstock”
  • In 1987, Starship began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us” from the film, “Mannequin”

  • In 2008, Procol Harum lead singer Gary Brooker won back full rights to the band’s biggest hit, “A Whiter Shade of Pale” when a London appeals court overturned a 2006 ruling that the groups’ organist, Matthew Fisher was entitled to 40% of the royalties for writing the song’s organ melody.  That initial ruling came nearly 40 years after the song was recorded.  In overturning it, the appeals court said Fisher had waited too long to make his claim.
  • On the same day, Beyonce married Jay-Z at his New York apartment.
  • In 2013, former Rolling Stone bass player Bill Wyman turned himself over to British police after reports suggesting he began a sexual relationship with Mandy Smith, who later became his second wife, when she was only 14.  Authorities decided not to pursue charges.

  • In 1913, blues legend, Muddy Waters, whose original songs included “Hoochie Coochie Man” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You”.  The Rolling Stones named themselves after his 1950 song “Rollin’ Stone” and Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” is lyrically based on Waters’ hit “You Need Love”.
  • In 1938, Declan Mulligan from The Beau Brummels who had the 1964 hit “Laugh Laugh”
