LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The California Coastal Commission yesterday approved a $1.8m grant for beach sand replenishment in Oceanside. About 900k cubic yards of sand will be removed from beyond the surf line and redistributed to the beach near the pier. Meanwhile, the city is working on a pilot project for what it calls, “living speed bumps” for longer-term sand retention on the city’s beaches. Headlands would be built at Tyson Street Park and Wisconsin Avenue with an offshore artificial reef between them. The concept has already been successfully used along Australia’s gold coast. This would be the first project of its kind in this country. Project design and fundraising for the $30m to $50m needed began this winter. The city hopes to begin construction in the next two years. https://www.cbs8.com/article/tech/science/environment/oceanside-combat-coastal-erosion-save-sand/509-3b077121-ebac-4254-9dfe-7930147dd7e2
Activists yesterday protested the revocation of five students’ visas at UCSD. Several international students at the school have been taken by immigration agents or had their legal status questioned in the past few weeks. Protesters yesterday in front of the iconic Geisel Library on campus said the government has been targeting and attempting to censor those with certain political opinions. A smaller group took the trolley into downtown San Diego in the afternoon to rally for the cause in front of the County Courthouse, hoping judges would hear their message. https://www.kpbs.org/news/education/2025/04/09/uc-san-diego-activists-protest-visa-revocations-for-five-students
The Hemet City Council on Tuesday rejected a request for a study to build two large logistics warehouses totaling 1.9m square feet. The unanimous vote came after a seven-hour public meeting at which dozens of people spoke. That effectively kills the project for a 75-acre site near Warren and Simpson Roads and Domenigoni Parkway. The Hemet Planning Commission had recommended in December that the City Council deny the project. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/09/1-19-million-square-foot-warehouse-project-rejected-by-hemet-city-council/
A pair of Bay Area state legislators are promoting a State Assembly bill to extend last call at bars in California to 4a. Legislation similar to the new AB 342 was presented three years ago to help a hospitality industry then reeling from business lost to the pandemic, but never made it out of the Assembly. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/09/california-bill-would-extend-downtown-bars-last-call-to-4-am/
A 3.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Coachella this morning at about 6:45a. It was mostly only felt in the desert. Few people reported feeling any of those. https://patch.com/california/palmdesert/earthquake-shakes-socal-thursday-morning-did-you-feel-it
Pala has been spared a lot of the morning low clouds and fog that often come in Spring. But the fog in San Diego was heavy enough to cause flight delays yesterday and today at San Diego International Airport.
Pala will have a couple of hot days to finish this week, cooling to the mid-70s by Tuesday. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

As of midday trading on Wall Street, the roller coaster continues. One day after an historic rally, reality has set in and stocks are giving back most of those gains. The Dow was down 3.4%. The S&P 500 fell 4.1%. And the Nasdaq was off by 4.9%. Gold shot up another $96.20 to $3,175.60 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures dropped $2.93 to $59.42 a barrel.
The European Union announced today that it will pause its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods for 90 days following yesterday’s announcement by the White House that the U.S. will hold off on its levies against most countries pending negotiations. However, the trade war between the U.S. and China is still in full swing. www.NYTimes.com
Labor Department numbers released today show inflation cooled in March to a 2.4% annualized rate – down from 2.8% in February. Core inflation, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories rose 2.8% – up from 3.1% in February. The huge tariffs on China and 10% universal duty on all imports from every country have yet to affect prices at the retail level. Economists say that’s coming soon. https://www.businessreport.com/article/inflation-was-down-sharply-in-march-heres-why
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said today that shoppers can expect some prices at the online retail giant to rise soon. Though tariff increases on most countries exports to the U.S. have been paused for 90 days, the Trump Administration’s 145% total tariff on imports from China is going ahead. While Jassy says Amazon has done some “strategic forward inventory buys” and has renegotiated terms with sellers so customers “have lower prices”, some price increases may have to happen soon and that there isn’t a more than 50% profit margin to allow tariffs to be absorbed at the wholesale level. https://abc7.com/post/expect-amazon-prices-rise-because-tariffs-ceo-says/16153025/

On this day in music history – April 10,
- 1962, former early Beatles bass player Stu Sutcliffe died. He’d stayed behind in Hamburg, Germany when the group returned to England after working there the previous summer. Paul McCartney switched to bass to replace him. Sutcliffe died of a brain aneurism in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was 22.
- In 1965, with the British Invasion well underway, British groups dominated the top of the U.S. charts for seven consecutive weeks beginning on this day with Freddie and the Dreamers’ “I’m Telling You Now”, followed by Wayne Fontana’s “Game of Love”, Herman’s Hermits’ “Mrs. Brown”, and The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride” making up the week’s top five.
- In 1967, Marvin Gaye completed recording his cover of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. Gladys Knight and the Pips also recorded a version of the song in 1967. Theirs was released first and peaked at #2. Marvin’s version wasn’t released for about 18 months. It remains the definitive one, topping the charts for seven weeks in December of 1969 and January of ‘70. Creedence Clearwater Revival did an 11-minute version of Grapevine on their Kozmo’s Factory album in 1970 with an edited single version peaking at #43 on the singles chart.
- In 1970 … one of the darkest days in music history. One week ahead of the release of his first solo album, 27-year old Paul McCartney issued a press statement announcing the split of The Beatles. John Lennon, who’d kept his much earlier decision to leave the group a secret for the benefit of the other three was furious. When asked for a comment about Paul’s announcement, Lennon replied, “Paul hasn’t left. I sacked him”.
- On the same day, at least one ray of hope. Elton John released his self-titled second album – the one that launched his career thanks to the breakthrough single, “Your Song”.
- In 1976, Peter Frampton was at #1 with “Frampton Comes Alive”, the best-selling album of that year and one of the biggest selling live albums ever. It stayed on the album chart for 97 weeks.
- In 1985, Madonna kicked off her first concert tour with three nights at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. Opening act was The Beastie Boys.
- In 1994, over 5k fans attended Kurt Cobain’s memorial service in Seattle.
- In 2007, the former home of Johnny Cash 20 miles northeast of Nashville burned to the ground. It was where he and wife June Carter wrote many of their songs, and entertained fans and U.S. Presidents. Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees had bought it four years earlier and was about to begin renovations when the fire struck.
Born on this day …
- In 1921, actor and singer Sheb Wooley who had the 1958 novelty hit “Purple People Eater”.
- In 1932, Nate Nelson from The Flamingos, whose biggest hit was 1959’s “I Only Have Eyes For You”
- In 1947, Jamaican singer and songwriter Bunny Wailer, who along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh formed The Wailers – the group that first brought reggae to the rest of the world.
