LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Riverside leaders led by Rep. Darrell Issa are demanding an explanation from the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Games organizers for the sudden decision to drop Temecula’s Galway Downs as the venue for the Games’ equestrian events.  Issa says the community deserves an explanation for the “arbitrary” move. Details from LA28 were unavailable.  The facility east of Temecula has 242 Acres of competition rings, pastures and trails with a 1-mile round track, 14 arenas and 400 horse stalls. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temeculas-galway-downs-dropped-olympic-venue-drawing-backlash

With little time to spare, the Escondido City Council last week voted to fund the majority of the $71k requested for the first Southern California Indigenous Culture & Art Festival at Grape Day Park, Saturday, April 19.  About 5k people are expected at the festival put on by the San Pasqual tribe, showcasing native culture.  Multiple Kumeyaay tribes will attend as well as two tribes from South Dakota.  The event has been in the planning stages since last summer.  Mayor White apologized to the council for miscommunication that cause the request for funding to be delayed until just two weeks before the event.  One councilmember abstained over the timing of the request and another revealed a possible conflict of interest after the 4-0 vote.  But the decision stands.  The hours will be 10a to 4p one week from tomorrow at Grape Day Park. https://www.times-advocate.com/articles/council-votes-to-fund-indigenous-festival-but-gets-heartburn-at-last-minute-request/

SPORTS

In the NBA – Anthony Edwards had 44 points as Minnesota topped the Grizzlies in Memphis, 141-125.  Other winners were Detroit, Indiana, Atlanta, and Milwaukee.  Tomorrow, the Clippers are at Sacramento and the Lakers host Houston.  Both LA teams finish the regular season Sunday with the Clippers at Golden State and the Lakers at Portland.  The Clippers are riding a six-game win streak and are tied for fourth place with Denver.  Both are likely to clinch the playoffs.  But five Western Conference teams – Denver, the Clippers, Golden State, Memphis and Minnesota are all within a game of each other with two days left in the regular season.  https://www.espn.com/nba/standings

In the NHL – The Kings routed the Ducks last night 6-1.  Other winners were Chicago, Florida, Columbus, Washington, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Nashville, Vegas and the New York Islanders.  Just five games tonight with a week left in the regular season.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained 1.1%.  The S&P 500 rose 1 1/3%.  The Nasdaq was up 1 ½%.  Gold continued to soar in its best three-day rally since the pandemic, up another $72 to $3,249.60 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.14 to $61.21 a barrel.

Trump tariffs have companies scrambling for ways to absorb, or if possible, avoid the added costs of imports.  How are tariffs affecting U.S. consumers right now?  There’s just a 10% tariff on all U.S. imports.  But those from China, which accounts for one third of all goods imported into the U.S are now facing levies of up to 145% on some items.  And the trade war with China is still escalating.  China today announced it will increase tariffs on goods imported from the U.S. from yesterday’s 84% to 125% and called President Trump’s tariffs “a joke”.  Some companies either have, or are standing by to raise prices, while others are adding a surcharge, just like restaurants did when egg prices peaked a few months ago.  Honeywell Building Automation has begun applying a 6.4% “tariff surcharge” on its building management systems and said it would eliminate the extra duty as soon as the increased tariffs go away.  Surcharges are easier to undo than price increases.  Other companies are even identifying surcharges as being due to the political games being played between Washington and Beijing.  Some retail businesses are using the tariffs as a sales tool, urging customers to shop now over the fear that prices will rise, which feeds the urge to “panic buy”.  None are saying prices absolutely will rise, or how much.  Consumer Edge reports that sales of shelf-stable groceries, including canned and jarred vegetables, instant coffee, and beer rose from the week prior to the April 2 announcement by President Trump of sweeping, worldwide tariffs.  Shelf stable vegetables showed the highest sales increase at 29%.  The evidence was collected from receipts and other transaction data at big box stores, warehouse clubs and convenience stores. https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/grocery-prices-tariffs-consumers-panic-buying/?intcid=CNR-02-0623  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-tariff-surcharge-prices/
