The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Expect increased law enforcement presence everywhere this Easter holiday weekend.  Escondido PD will be holding a DUI checkpoint somewhere in that city tonight from 6p to 1a.  https://www.times-advocate.com/articles/epd-holding-dui-checkpoint-april-18/

The Fallbrook Union High School District is investigating hazing allegations involving students on Fallbrook High’s varsity baseball team.  Dave Mendoza, the parent of one of several boys accused of sexually hazing another player says his son was suspended, kicked off the team and banned from games and that others faced similar actions.  The incident happened in March, but only recently surfaced.  www.Fox5.com

There were another pair of aftershocks today to Monday’s Julian earthquake – 2.6 and 2.5 magnitude.  Few people reported feeling them. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40931879/executive

Officials say it’s time people became more educated about the Elsinore Fault, the 112-mile long fault line that was the source of Monday’s 5.2 magnitude quake.  According to the SoCal Earthquake Data Center, it’s one of the largest seismic fault lines in Southern California, but historically “one of the quietest”.  It runs from Imperial County through Julian, the hills immediately north of Pala, roughly following I-15 from Temecula past Lake Elsinore and into the mountains south of Corona. The main trace of the Elsinore Fault has only recorded one event stronger than Monday’s 5.2 … a magnitude 6 in 1910 hear Temescal Valley.  Seismologists say the line is capable of a 7.8 quake which could violently shake cities including Lake Elsinore, Murrieta, Temecula, Wildomar, and communities throughout inland North County.  Southern California’s last 7.8 temblor was in 1857 along the San Andreas Fault. https://patch.com/california/temecula/earthquake-fault-could-devastate-temecula-socal-report

Although home prices are up in California overall, they’re staying flat for now in San Diego County.  Sales have dipped due to potential buyers’ fears of economic uncertainty – down 2.3% month-to-month, but up 4.9% compared to one year ago.  It was the fourth consecutive month of sales declines.  According to the California Association of Realtors, sales of single-family homes in San Diego County are down 4% from one year ago.  But prices are remaining stable.  The county’s median priced single-family home was $1.04m last month – the same as in February and only 2% higher than one year ago.  The statewide median price increased 6.7% last month to $884,350.  https://www.kpbs.org/news/economy/2025/04/17/home-prices-rise-in-california-flat-in-san-diego-county

Few local areas have had more than a hundredth or two of an inch of rain the past two days.  Valley Center, Lake Wohlford, Lake Henshaw, Warner Springs and Palomar Observatory each had close to a tenth.  Mesa Grande had a quarter inch.  Parts of Palomar Mountain had a third or more.  That’s about all we’re going to get for this set of storms.

One more day of cool temperatures in Pala.  Sunny and warm for Easter, cooling back to the low 70s by the end of next week.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a, except for April 13 and Easter Sunday April 20.

The acting head of the IRS, Gary Shapely is being ousted after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told President Trump that Shapely had been placed in the position without his knowledge at the direction of Elon Musk’s DOGE.  Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender is expected to be appointed the next acting head of the IRS.  Trump’s pick for permanent IRS commissioner, Billy Long has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.  Previous acting commissioner Melanie Krause had resigned the position earlier this month over the data-sharing agreement with Homeland Security that allows immigration authorities to cross-check the tax records of people they’re investigating. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trump-replacing-acting-irs-commissioner-rcna201907

Eli Lilly stock is soaring after the successful trial of its latest weight loss pill, called orforglipron.  Indications are that it may work as well as Ozempic and Mounjaro, which are injections.  It can increase insulin sensitivity and delay the time it takes to empty the stomach, thus curbing hunger.  That makes it valuable for weight loss and managing diabetes.  Lilly’s other weight loss drug, Zepbound is still more effective for weight loss in adults without diabetes.  The biggest difference between orforglipron and Rybelsus – another oral GLP-1 which is made by Novo Nordisk is that orforglipron doesn’t have to be taken on an empty stomach.  If orforglipron is approved for sale in about a year, it could help reduce the global shortage of weight loss injectables and proliferation of copycat drugs by compounders. https://www.axios.com/2025/04/17/lilly-weight-loss-drug-pill-diabetes

United Healthcare stock crashed after a dismal earnings report.  It was the healthcare giant’s first earnings miss in a decade.  The company is also still reeling from the December murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of its insurance division. www.morningbrew.com

This is weekend two of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival for 2025.  Entertainment lineups are the same as last weekend.  Lady Gaga headlines tonight.  Post Malone closes out Sunday night.  The only thing that everyone is hoping will be different are the traffic problems that greeted campers last Thursday and Friday.  Event organizers, Goldenvoice promised attendees and local city governments that it won’t happen again this weekend or next weekend at the Stagecoach Festival country version of Coachella.  https://www.coachella.com/

A number of this weekend’s performances at Coachella will be live streamed on the event’s app and on its YouTube channel.  The Coachella Livestream app is available on Google Play or the Apple App Store, same as the Rez Radio App.  Streaming for all stages begins today at 4p and continues through Sunday night. (The following are excerpts from today’s Riverside Press Enterprise)  At the latest annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, a groundbreaking study presented troubling findings regarding the relationship between microplastic exposure and chronic disease risk in United States coastal areas.  The study revealed that higher concentrations of microplastics in local bodies of water were correlated with a greater prevalence of hypertension, diabetes and stroke … but not cancer.  This raises critical concerns about how these ubiquitous particles may contribute to the rising rates of chronic conditions affecting millions of Americans.  For now, it’s clear that microplastics, particularly those found in water and food sources, may be playing a more significant role in public health than previously recognized.  The implications are particularly worrisome in areas near the coast, where higher concentrations of microplastics in water seem to align with increased incidences of hypertension and stroke.  Here’s what you can do to reduce exposure to microplastics.  Reduce Single-Use Plastics, Filter Your Water, Be Careful Reheating food and drink in plastic containers, Choose Natural Fibers, Opt for Loose Leaf Tea rather than tea bags, Rinse Your Rice, Limit Intake of Ultra-Processed Foods, and Support Plastic-Free Initiatives. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/04/18/what-you-can-do-to-reduce-your-exposure-to-microplastics/
