BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gave back some of yesterday’s gains.  The Dow fell a half percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each dropped a quarter percent.  Gold rebounded on the Comex, gaining $37.30 to $3,343.30 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil future were up 85 cents at $60.75 a barrel.

Ahead of this weekend’s trade talks with China in Switzerland, President Trump says the tariff on Chinese imports should be 80%.  It’s currently 145%.  Whether the suggestion will help or hinder the talks remains to be seen.  Trump says the negotiations are in Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s hands. www.cnn.com

All of the “big three” US automakers came out against this week’s US trade deal with the UK. All three are facing major setbacks due to tariffs because of the highly integrated supply chains in the US, Mexico and Canada.  Meanwhile, Britain’s auto industry is pleased with the new 10% tariff rate on the first 100k vehicles exported to the US and other trade concessions in the first bilateral trade agreement since President Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day”.  Matt Blunt, president of a trade group representing Ford, GM and Stellantis said it is now cheaper to import a UK vehicle with very little US content than a USMCA-compliant vehicle from Mexico or Canada that is half American parts. In his words, “We are disappointed that the administration prioritized the UK ahead of our own North American partners.”  Last month, Stellantis halted production at Canadian and Mexican plants it operates.  https://thehill.com/business/5292037-auto-industry-critics-trump-uk-deal/

The US Postal Service today reported a $3.3b loss for the first quarter of 2025.  The post office continues to raise postal rates as mail volume continues to decline.  USPS today announced its new Postmaster General will be David Steiner, a FedEx board member and former CEO at Waste Management.  Louis DeJoy resigned that post in March under pressure from the White House.  Postal unions have raised concerns about the appointment because Steiner sits on the board of a competitor to the Post Office.  The President says he’s considering merging the Postal Service with the U.S. Commerce Department.  Democrats say that would violate the law.  https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/us-postal-service-reports-33-billion-quarterly-net-loss-2025-05-09/ https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/fedex-board-member-tapped-lead-us-postal-service-2025-05-09/

Newly-elected Pope Leo’s first order of business may be … business.  The budget of the world’s smallest country, the Vatican is seriously out of balance.  A bank holds about 5.4b Euros in assets for the Vatican and a wealth fund including real estate, revenue from Catholic schools and hospitals, as well as hundreds of millions of donations is currently worth another 3b Euros.  The current balance sheet shows an 83m Euro deficit.  According to the Financial Times, some retired priests may have to forgo their pensions. www.morningbrew.com

It’s once again getting hard to find gas under $4 locally.  After a month of average prices slowly drifting downward, they’re up about six cents this week with the cheapest retailers rising the most.  Todays’ average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in San Diego County is $4.74.  In Riverside County, it’s $4.67.  Nationwide, today’s average is $3.11.  Today’s lowest local price is $4.07 at Son’s on 5th at Centre City Parkway in Escondido.  In Southwest Riverside county, it’s $4.33 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and Temecula Costco.  There are at least a half dozen stations in Hemet and San Jacinto reporting prices of $3.99 or less.  One was at $3.75 yesterday. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.64091921212917&lng=-116.99289529628564&z=11
