The California Coastal Commission yesterday approved the city of Carlsbad’s request to redefine “airport uses” for industrial and commercial areas west of McClellan-Palomar Airport.  The city council’s request came out of concern by residents about the recent increase in commercial flights and resulting increase in noise from the airport.  The changes could prevent certain expansion activities planned for property west of the largest airport in North County. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/07/09/coastal-commission-approves-carlsbads-request-to-redefine-airport-uses/

SDG&E customers will be getting two electric bill credits this summer as part of the California Climate Credit program.  The $49.36 credits will automatically be applied to eligible customers’ bills in August and September.  They’re funded through California’s Cap-and-Invest Program.  Eligible residential natural gas customers received a similar $32.58 climate credit in April.  Lower energy costs will also lower residential rates by a few dollars for those who receive electricity from another provider, but use SDG&E for delivery. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/sdg-e-customers-receive-2-climate-credits-summer-bills

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed moderate gains on all three major U.S. indexes.  The Dow gained two tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up a quarter percent.  Gold traded $18 lower on the Comex at $4,122.80 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 87 cents to $71.21 a barrel.

President Trump today reiterated that he won’t sign the housing bill approved by Congress with bipartisan support in June.  He called it “a big yawn” and said he wouldn’t sign until Congress passes a strict voter ID bill called the SAVE America Act.  That bill would require proof of citizen ship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot.  SAVE America has stalled in the Senate where it failed to get the necessary 60 votes.  Trump has until midnight tonight to act on the housing bill.  He has said that while he won’t sign it, he also won’t veto it.  Therefore, it will automatically become law.  Its more than 40 provisions are designed to make home ownership more affordable, mainly by encouraging more homebuilding.  It also includes a provision championed by Trump that limits the number of single-family homes big investors can buy at 350.  Restricting the market to those all-cash major players would make the market more competitive for individual buyers.  Housing affordability is a major election issue with both parties in Congress hoping to claim credit for passing legislation to do something about it. https://apnews.com/article/trump-housing-bill-77ec340dcdd676c46c458813b461b1af

President Trump has nominated former Marine and Oklahoma state trooper, Lance Schroyer to be the next director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  Todd Lyons resigned as acting ICE director in May while the agency was under scrutiny for its aggressive tactics.  Longtime ICE official and former executive of a private prison company, David Venturella has been acting director of ICE since last month.  https://www.npr.org/2026/06/27/nx-s1-5873485/trump-nominates-lance-schroyer-ice-director

New York state Attorney General Letitia James is suing 3M, DuPont and other major companies, alleging they knowingly sold harmful so-called forever chemicals used in cosmetics, non-stick cookware and other consumer products.  PFAS chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers and developmental delays in children.  The lawsuit seeks to force companies to fund environmental cleanup efforts in New York and warn consumers about their products.  New York co-defendants DuPont, Chemours and Corteva agreed last year to pay New Jersey up to $2b to settle environmental claims related to PFAS in that state. https://apnews.com/article/forever-chemicals-new-york-letitia-james-pfas-5503aa8dfad60ec21ffaad1e298471d5

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this week at the movies, three new wide releases.  The live action version of the family fantasy musical “Moana” stars Catherine Laga’aia and Dwayne Johnson.  The comedy drama romance “The Invite” stars Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton.  And the fantasy horror mystery, “Evil Dead Burn”. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/?ref_=bo_nb_we_tab

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing to ease emissions regulations on heavy duty trucks enacted during the Biden administration, which President Trump calls “unnecessary and unworkable”.  It’s the latest in a series of deregulatory actions by the Trump administration that have rolled back emissions standards for new vehicles.  Trucking organizations are thrilled.  Environmental groups are appalled.  The EPA’s proposal would scale back and postpone provisions designed to make sure emissions reducing technology keeps working as a truck ages.  One has to do with warranties.  The other is related to the useful life of emissions technology.  The EPA want to do away with current rules that require truck engines to automatically operate at reduced power if emissions systems aren’t working up to spec and replace them with an operator warning.  An EPA analysis says the changes would save the trucking industry between about $4k and $6k per diesel engine affected.  It would also increase nitrogen oxide pollutions from heavy duty trucks by 4.2% in 2030 and 11.6% by 2055.  The proposal is currently open for public comment. https://www.npr.org/2026/07/09/nx-s1-5886354/epa-heavy-duty-truck-emissions

President Trump yesterday granted a key approval for a new pipeline that would carry oil from Canada into the U.S. where it would be exported or refined.  The Bridger Pipeline Expansion would carry over a half million barrels of oil a day from the Canadian border through eastern Montana and Wyoming, where it would link with an existing pipeline.  The new 650-mile pipeline would carry about two thirds as much oil as the better-known Keystone XL pipeline that was partially built when President Biden cancelled its permit the day he took office, citing climate-change concerns.  The Bridger Extension still needs state and federal environmental approvals.  Company officials want to start construction next year.  https://www.npr.org/2026/04/30/g-s1-119648/trump-canada-us-oil-bridger-pipeline-expansion

  • In 2008, the bass drum skin used on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” album sold at auction for $1m.
  • In 2015, John Fogerty countersued former Creedence Clearwater Revival bandmates for breach of contract in which he allowed them to tour under the name Creedence Clearwater Revisited and play CCR songs they’d all recorded together 45 years earlier.  Fogerty claimed he’d not received the agreed-upon payment from the others in more than three years.
