An accident on northbound I-15 at the Overland Drive overpass this morning shortly before 8:15a appears to have caused another incident on the southbound side in which the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup was struck by what was initially reported to be a brick off the overpass coming through his windshield. It was later learned that the object was actually a piece of concrete from the earlier Overland Drive incident. The northbound incident appears to have been caused when a driver fell asleep at the wheel. The southbound driver of the truck exited at Rancho California Road and called for help. He was treated for minor injuries. https://patch.com/california/temecula/brick-flies-sb-i-15-truck-window-heres-what-happened

The leader of NATO said yesterday that the deal President Trump announced, but hedged on when questioned about details by reporters is actually a “framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.” In a statement, NATO said negotiations with the US, Denmark and Greenland will go forward to ensure that Russia and China never gain an economic or military foothold in Greenland. Discussions were held with top military leaders yesterday in Davos in which a compromise would include Denmark giving the US small pockets of Greenland where they could build military bases. The apparent détente reached yesterday sent stocks soaring after Trump also backed down from tariff threats against those who would oppose his designs on Greenland. Although European leaders are relived that military action and tariff threats have been dropped, they’re left very confused about the future of the United States as a trustworthy partner in world affairs. With negotiations continuing, it appears any major rift between NATO member nations is on hold. www.nytimes.com
Comments by SCOTUS justices yesterday during oral arguments over the lawfulness of President Trump’s efforts to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook made it sound like she will be keeping her job. Their main concern is that allowing her dismissal weakens the independence of the Fed. Trump wanted her out so he could replace her with someone more likely to approve the interest rate cuts he wants. Trump and the Justice Department have targeted Fed chairman Jerome Powell for the same reason. www.morningbrew.com
President Trump is suing JPMorgan for $5b, claiming the bank closed his accounts following the January 6 attack on the Capitol for political reasons. The bank denies the allegation. www.marketwatch.com

Smithfield Foods will acquire Nathan’s Famous, the Coney Island hot dog brand that sponsors that big hot dog eating contest every Fourth of July. The sale price was $450m. Nathan’s began 110 years ago, selling 5 cent hot dogs from a stand at Coney Island. Smithfield already owns the rights to produce and sell Nathan’s hot dogs nationwide. With production costs up 27% in recent years, Smithfield thinks consolidating ownership will achieve savings. Smithfield also owns the Armour brand of processed meats. The handful of Nathan’s hot dog stands in and around New York City were sold off to investors in 1987, with the franchise expanding ever since. https://apnews.com/article/nathans-famous-hot-dogs-smithfield-merger-9927a1f0fde1ff32c2f95dc4949d3dfd

According to an internal ICE memo obtained by Associated Press, federal immigration officers are claiming the authority to forcibly enter private homes with only an administrative warrant, not one signed by a judge. This is a complete reversal of longstanding rules respecting Fourth Amendment constitutional limits on government searches. That standard of requiring a judge’s signature has been repeatedly upheld by US Supreme Court rulings. www.apnews.com
Speaking of ice … Severe weather across a 2k-mile storm front from Texas to New England is expected to affect more than 200m Americans today with snow, sleet and freezing rain as far south as the Carolinas. It’s going to make all forms of travel difficult and will likely affect air travel nationwide. www.morningbrew.com

After four decades in and around the resort for which it’s named, the festival will be moving to Boulder, Colorado next year. This year’s festival runs now through February 1. https://www.npr.org/2026/01/21/nx-s1-5631847/sundance-film-festival-park-city
This year’s Oscar nominees were announced this morning by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. But the biggest news may be who didn’t get nominated. Though “Wicked” got 10 nominations last year, this year, its sequel “Wicked: For Good” got none. Even though it wasn’t as popular as the first one, everybody thought Ariana Grande would get another supporting actress nomination for her role as Glinda. A nod for Paul Mescal for “Hamnet” was supposed to be a sure thing. Instead, Delroy Lindo got a surprise supporting actor nomination for “Sinners”, which set a record with 16 total nominations. It was Lindo’s first nomination and long overdue. Guillermo del Toro was snubbed as best director for “Frankenstein” even though the film got nine other nominations. Kate Hudson got a surprise best actress nomination for “Song Sung Blue”. Her only other acting nomination was 25 years ago for playing Penny Lane in “Almost Famous”. But Chase Infiniti didn’t get an expected actress nomination for “One Battle After Another”. The revolutionary father-daughter drama got 13 total nominations, including four actor categories. Both One Battle and Sinners are from Warner Bros. who had their best Oscar nomination morning ever. This year’s ten best-picture nominees are “Bugonia”, “F1”, “Frankenstein”, “Hamnet”, “Marty Supreme”, “One Battle After Another”, “The Secret Agent”, “Sentimental Value”, “Sinners”, and “Train Dreams.” Presentation ceremonies for the 98th Academy Awards are March 15 beginning at 4p at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on ABC. https://apnews.com/article/oscar-nominations-2026-83798def8de7626b011aba3c043a4115
