If you’re planning a trip to the beach this holiday weekend, cross Tamarack in Carlsbad off your list of possibilities. There’s hardly any sand left after erosion from pounding waves this summer. The California Parks Department closed the Tamarack parking lot because of erosion. Engineers are being consulted for a possible solution. With Hurricane Marie sending waves in the 6 to 10-foot range, there could be minor coastal flooding at evening high tides. It’ll be worst on Sunday and Monday. Speaking of closures, the coastal rail line will be closed this weekend from Oceanside to San Diego for maintenance and improvement projects. There will be no passenger or freight service tonight until Monday morning.
After 7 days of jury deadlock, the judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial declared a mistrial this morning. One juror was holding out. An appellate judge refused a request to dismiss that juror and the trial judge decided not to continue to bring the jury back Saturday pending an appeal to the Massachusetts Supreme Court. We’re now two weeks into the fall semester at Palomar Community College with enrollment now just under 20k. New academic programs tied to in-demand careers include a Bachelor of Science in Building Performance and Environmental Design, and an Associate of Science or Certificate of Achievement in Forensic Technology. Palomar has also adopted a new academic year to create a pathway for students to complete courses for transfer to a four-year institution in just three semesters. Pala will have continued warm temperatures through the weekend with a chance of up to a tenth of an inch of rain. Back into the 90s next week with another chance of rain Thursday. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres, Angels and Diamondbacks had yesterday off. The Dodgers edged St. Louis 3-2, rallying in the bottom of the 9th on a 2-run double by Teoscar Hernandez with Mooke Betts beating the throw to the plate for the winning run. With about two dozen games per team left in the regular season, Milwaukee has the best record in the Majors at 87 and 54, and lead the NL Central by 8 games over the Cubs. The Braves and Dodgers lead the other National League divisions with identical 83 and 57 records. Atlanta is on top of the East by 4 games over Philadelphia. The Dodgers lead the Diamondbacks by 9 ½ games and the Padres by 10. Both teams are currently out of Wild Card position. In the American League, Tampa Bay leads the East by three games over the Yankees. The White Sox lead the Central by three games over the Guardians. And Houston leads the West by 2 games over Texas. Today, the Angels are in Pittsburgh. The Diamondbacks are in Houston. The Dodgers host the Nationals. And the Padres host the Yankees.
In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm got routed by the visiting Inland Empire 66ers last night 11-1. Game 4 of 6 is tonight. Tomorrow and Sunday are the final games of the regular season.
In the NFL – The regular season begins next week and includes a game from Melbourne, Australia featuring the Rams and 49ers on Thursday. It’s one of a record nine international games this season, including first-ever games in Rio de Janeiro and Paris. Other locations this season include London, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has said he hopes to increase the number of non-US games to 16 per season. The current collective bargaining agreement with players allows a maximum of ten. Every team in the league owns marketing rights to at least one foreign market. The Rams own Australia, so they’ll be the home team next week. The 49ers have the rights to Mexico, so they’ll be the home team for this year’s game there. There is still some question as to whether the NFL’s international strategy will significantly increase American football’s popularity. Time zones are a problem. For a live prime time game broadcast in the U.S., a game has to start in the middle of the night in Europe and early morning in Australia. Morning games on U.S. broadcasts don’t get as good ratings as Sunday afternoon and evening games. In college football – Week 2 began last night. #14 USC hosts Fresno State tonight.
In Major League Soccer – Tomorrow, San Diego FC is at Miami, the Galaxy host New England, and LAFC is at Real Salt Lake.
In the NBA – Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson is getting a five-year $208m contract extension. It includes a 10% trade kicker. The 23-year old is now contracted to Houston through 2032. In racing – The NASCAR Cup playoffs begin this Sunday at Darlington. Denny Hamlin has the most points with 2100. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gave back some of yesterday’s gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down a half percent. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each fell a third of a percent. Gold was down $56.10 on the Comex, trading at $4,483.80 an ounce. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 42 cents at $90.88 a barrel.
The Labor Department released the monthly jobs report today. An unexpectedly high 162k jobs were added nationwide – far exceeding the 65k business experts were anticipating. Revised figures for June and July turned July’s slight job losses to a slight increase. With two months to go until the midterm elections, President Trump hailed today’s numbers. But that puts the focus back on inflation with voters increasingly frustrated by higher prices and fuel prices hitting record levels since the US and Israel first attacked Iran back in February. And job creation, though getting better, is still only half the norm in 2023 and 2024. Today’s labor report may increase the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will raise the key short-term interest rate when it meets in two weeks. Here’s what you can expect at the gas pumps for the long holiday weekend. Prices are just about where they were three months ago. That’s up about 40 cents from their lowest during that period and at a record-high for Labor Day. Today’s nationwide average for a gallon of regular is $4.15. In San Diego County, it’s $5.90. In Riverside County, it’s $5.72. Today’s lowest local price is $4.99 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center. In southwest Riverside County, it’s $5.29 at Sam’s Club and Temecula Costco. Diesel is a whole other story. The nationwide average hit an all-time high today at $5.85 a gallon, which is definitely going to impact transportation costs for all goods that spend any time on a truck. Pabst Blue Ribbon wants its beer back. And they’re offering a $20k reward to anyone with information leading to the recovery of 1,600 cases of beer that went missing from a Montclair, California ware house August 17. First, about $45k worth of beer headed to Tucson was picked up that never reached its destination. Then, about an hour later, fake documents were submitted to pick up another $25k worth of brew. The company wants its beer back by next Wednesday and is asking anyone with information to email hotline@pabst.com . Tesla held a media preview of its long-promised Cybercab this week. The production-ready prototype is a small, all-electric coupe that holds two passengers and no driver. It has butterfly doors, a large central touchscreen, no steering wheel or pedals and a large rear cargo area. It operates autonomously, driving itself around and picking up customers through Tesla’s “RoboTaxi” app with dynamic pricing based on supply and demand. Tesla is claiming Cybercab is one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles ever produced – 10% better than its own Model 3. Its body is made of reaction injection molding panels, which eliminates the need for paint. The panels are the color of the car. The Cybercab uses only cameras for unsupervised autonomous driving – no radar or other sensors. Fares are greeted with music and mood lighting selected ahead of time. For now, Cybercabs will be limited to six cities within Texas and Florida – and will only operate in certain parts of those cities. Tesla has not disclosed the cost of a Cybercab or any details on a privately-owned model. - 1954, on the same day his second single, “Good Rockin’ Tonight” was released, Elvis Presley along with Bill Black and Scotty Moore made their first appearance at The Grand Old Opry. It was not an auspicious debut. The audience reacted poorly and Opry manager Jim Denny told Elvis he should go back to driving a truck. A lot he knew.
- In 1962, The Beatles had their first formal recording session at EMI’s Abbey Road studios. They recorded six songs including “Love Me Do” and “Please Please Me”.
- In 1965, The Who had their van, containing thousands of dollars’ worth of concert equipment stolen from outside a home where they were negotiating to buy a guard dog.
- In 1968, The Beatles recorded promotional films for “Hey Jude” and “Revolution”. To get around a union ban on lip-sync performances, the vocals were recorded live over pre-recorded tracks from a 36-piece orchestra with 300 assorted fans and extras singing the long refrain on Hey Jude.
- On the same day, The Bee Gees were enjoying their second #1 single on the British chart, “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You”.
- In 1971, Paul and Linda McCartney were at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey” from the album, “Ram”.

- In 2015, the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards told the New York Daily News that rap music was for “tone deaf people”. He said, “All they need is a drum beat with somebody yelling over it to be happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another.”
