Air travel is changing – mostly in the form of new classes of seats designed to increase profits for airlines as they struggle with the high cost of fuel. Though airlines contract for fuel long ahead of time, increasing fuel costs are now finding their way into new airline contracts. Bargain carrier JetBlue is beginning a new first-class option as part of a broad seating overhaul. BlueFirst will begin December 8 on 30 select routes not already covered by the carrier’s Mint business service and will include perks such as reclining seats, extra legroom and Group 1 boarding. There will be three tiers of BlueFirst beginning with Base. Regular BlueFirst adds an extra checked bag for a total of two, free seat selection, and no charge for cancellation. Flex adds refunds for cancellation and no fees for same-day switches or standby. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/15/jetblue-bluefirst-first-class.html
Meanwhile, Southwest is replacing its two tiers of frequent flier status with silver, gold and platinum, similar to other carriers beginning January 1. Southwest has spent the last couple of years undoing many of the differences between it and its competitors including getting rid of two free checked bags and open seating. It now charges for those things, just like other carriers. The new Silver status will require 35k tier one qualifying points or 25 qualifying flights. Gold will need 65 TQPs, which is lower than the old top tier. Platinum requires 140k TQPs or 100 qualifying flights. Boarding is in order of tier and there are bonuses for customers in between status tiers. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/15/southwest-rapid-rewards-tiers-a-list.html
All of that said, if you’re flying this holiday season, book now. Flights are filling up on all airlines and there won’t be as much selection as in the past.
As for future flights, Elon Musk say’s he’ll give every kid in America a share of SpaceX stock. Today’s pronouncement came one day after intelligence company Anthropic announced it will commit 5% of its shares to a new “public benefit” fund. Neither company provided extensive details except that Anthropic’s donation will be handled by a new entity within the company. https://apnews.com/article/musk-spacex-anthropic-donation-ai-b3312da37a0e340be275295073055e00
