A driver was hospitalized Monday after a vehicle went off southbound I-5 and landed on Oceanside Boulevard during heavy rains. The driver was transported to Scripps La Jolla hospital with unknown injuries. https://onscene.tv/car-flies-off-5-freeway-and-lands-on-oceanside-boulevard/
A man who struck and killed another man with his vehicle during an argument in Carlsbad in June of 2024 was sentenced yesterday to 22 years in state prison. 43-year old Robert Cameron Owens was acquitted of murder, but found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Owens and his fiancée had met the victim, Steven Smith and two other men at a bar. After a night of drinking, they ended up at the beach, arguing. Owens eventually pointed his vehicle at Smith, accelerated and struck him, sending him flying into a boulder. After Smith didn’t get up, Owens accused him of faking and left the scene. Upon his arrest, Owens claimed Smith had pulled a knife. Though admitting “bumping” him with his vehicle, Owens denied he hit Smith on purpose. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/13/man-who-struck-and-killed-another-man-with-vehicle-during-argument-in-carlsbad-sentenced/
The Escondido city council voted unanimously last week to extend a 45-day ban on data centers for an additional year while city staff assess potential impacts. The city has not yet received any applications for such developments. Under the moratorium, no data center plans can be submitted until a city policy is established. Last week, Poway became the first city in San Diego County to pass a city-wide permanent ban on third-party data centers used for artificial intelligence applications. According to an Escondido city staff report, they’ll be consulting utility stakeholders, businesses and residents and looking into electricity and wastewater demand, water use, cooling systems, backup power generation, noise, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, emergency response, fire and life safety, and land uses. Any proposed regulations are expected to be presented to the city council by June. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/14/escondido-bans-data-centers-through-august-2027/

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – Last night in Tampa, the Rays tied the AL championship series at a game apiece by beating the Guardians 3-1. All three of their runs came in the third inning which began with a fielding error by Cleveland third baseman Jose Ramirez.
Tonight, the Dodgers host Game 3 of the NLCS. Milwaukee’s Robert Gasser will start on the mound against LA’s Blake Snell. The Brewers lead the series two games to none.
Don Mattingly, who took over managing the Philadelphia Phillies 28 games into last season has been signed to a two-year contract. His 2026 record was 79 and 55 and the team made it all the way to Game 3 of a Wild Card series. His son, Preston Mattingly is the Phillies general manager. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50181619/phillies-hire-don-mattingly-2-year-deal-manager
Among the Padres’ tools this past season were a top-notch pitching staff – among them, starters Michael King and Walker Buehler, and relievers Yuki Matsui, Nick Pivetta and Adrian Morejon. First baseman Ty France was a key in the batter’s box early in the season. All five could be gone next season. King and Matsui have player options for the upcoming year. France was drafted on a minor league deal last spring. So, his future is uncertain. Pivetta hasn’t seen much action, being down with injuries and is now facing a team option in his contract. Morejon is a free agent. It’s going to be an interesting off-season for the future of the Padres once the World Series is concluded. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/08/end-of-season-brings-uncertainty-for-padres-soon-to-be-free-agents/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down. The Dow fell a half percent. The S&P 500 was off by 1.3%. And the Nasdaq declined a full 2%. Comex gold futures plunged about $70 to $4,107.20 an ounce. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.68 to $95.82 a barrel.
Inflation got worse last month. The consumer price index, released today by the Labor Department rose 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August. The month-to-month jump was 0.6%, the biggest one month gain in five months. Rising oil prices due to the war in Iran and surging investment in data centers pushing up prices for scarce computer chips will pose a challenge for the Federal Reserve, which is required by law to seek stable prices. Core prices, which exclude the volatile food and energy categories, rose 2.6% in September, up from 2.4% in August. All of this will put pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates at its next meeting in two weeks – one week before elections. Today’s report is the last major data scheduled for release before the November election. https://apnews.com/article/cpi-inflation-consumer-prices-affordability-3985019a54c82421e6112fb57baba048
Bank of America’s quarterly report disappointed the market. Q3 profit fell 17% and revenue was below expectations, causing shares to drop 8% today. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/14/bank-of-america-bac-q3-2026-earnings.html
Netflix is planning to lay off about 1k employees, or 6% of its workforce, mostly in the areas of product, tech, HR and legal. Little reason was given. But just a few weeks ago, co-CEO Ted Sarandos told attendees at a conference that his company was “not growing as fast as I want.” https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/14/netflix-layoffs.html
Get used to fewer choices at stores, especially discounters. Dollar General, BJ’s Wholesale Club and others have all said in their earnings calls this month that they either have cut or plan to cut assortments in merchandise, and that after trimming product choices, they may look at raising prices to get back to healthy growth of their businesses. Dollar General trimmed 1,500 items, or Stock Keeping Units in March. BJ’s plans to reduce its SKUs by 20%. The advantage of removing low-selling SKUs is not having to discount slow-sellers. The risk is a loss of customers to places that still carry whatever gets cut from inventory. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/10/from-bjs-to-lululemon-retailers-are-trimming-assortments.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
The Social Security Administration projected today that the annual cost-of-living adjustment for older adults and people with disabilities will go up by 3.6% beginning in June of next year. That’s about an extra $75 a month for the 72m people receiving Social Security benefits. https://apnews.com/article/social-security-cost-of-living-inflation-cpi-c7c73bbb304205696e7dd1afa27fc850
Disney announced today that the upcoming Super Bowl in February will be streamed live on Disney+. That’s in addition to it being seen on Disney-owned ABC and ESPN. Two other Monday Night games leading up to Super Bowl will also appear on Disney+. Many streaming services are adding live sports events to attract new subscribers. It’s also another advertising opportunity for a game that’s already a sold out – the earliest sellout in Super Bowl history. While “the Big Game” will still be on traditional network television, other events including the Academy Awards and The Emmy Awards are both leaving traditional TV and will stream exclusively. The Emmys will be on Prime Video this coming year and the Oscars will move to YouTube in 2029. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/07/disney-stream-super-bowl-2027.html
