One person was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries after a pickup truck overturned down an embankment on De Luz Road just west of Sandia Creek Drive yesterday morning.  The incident was reported at about 9:36a. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/10/15/news/one-person-transported-code-3-after-vehicle-overturns-down-embankment/83060.html

Residents of Crestview Hills Mobile Home Park in Fallbrook are facing a second rent increase this year under new ownership.  Rents in the senior community have already doubled in the past decade.  Now, ownership is seeking a second increase due to a property tax reassessment and the projected cost of replacing the park’s sewer system.  Being unincorporated, Fallbrook does not have rental laws for mobile home parks and instead defers to the statewide Mobilehome Residency Law which does not regulate rents.  And AB 1482, which limits the maximum rate increase for most California rental units to 10% and 5% for cost of living, does not apply to mobile home parks. https://www.newsbreak.com/realtor-com-news-insights-321466098/4954677459297-california-mobile-home-park-doubles-rent-on-senior-residents

Palomar College in San Marcos has narrowed its search for a new superintendent/president to replace Star Rivera-Lacey to four finalists.  Rivera-Lacey resigned last November to become deputy chancellor/provost at Riverside Community College.  The 20k-student Palomar College is run by a locally elected board of governors who have the authority to select a new lead administrator.  Among the finalist candidates are Palomar interim superintendent/president Tina Recalde. https://thecoastnews.com/palomar-college-narrows-search-for-new-president/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The World Series begins Friday in Milwaukee with the Brewers hosting Tampa Bay at 5p on Fox.

Back in 2015, the Milwaukee Brewers ran a promotion selling so-called “Timeless Tickets”, where a fan would pay $1k and get admission to any future game plus the right to buy three more tickets for that game.  Now that the Brewers are in the World Series, fans are eager to redeem those special tickets.  While the team is able to accommodate all of those requests, some fans are unhappy with the location of their seats.  Now, the Brewers’ president of business operations, Rick Schlesinger is saying there was some internal miscommunication on the logistics of fulfilling Timeless Ticket requests, that the team is not living up to the spirit of the program, and that they are working to find a solution. https://apnews.com/article/brewers-world-series-timeless-ticket-promotion-fans-fe377e7b0c67dd70e84bc64aad77e45b

The Angels have fired Kurt Suzuki as team manager.  They finished last season with a 62 and 100 record – the first 100-loss season in franchise history.  Suzuki’s contract option is being declined.  He is reportedly being offered a role as a special assistant with the team.  Suzuki’s replacement will be the seventh manager, including interims, since the Angels parted ways with Mike Scioscia at the end of 2018. https://apnews.com/article/angels-kurt-suzuki-fired-e53da9bdbe81d1785d63d412ca803f19

In the NBA – The regular season began last night with LeBron James and his new team, the 76ers rallying to beat the NBA champion Knicks 106-100.  The Pistons pulled off a come-from-behind of their own with Javonte Green scoring 19 points in the second half to top the Celtics 121-113 in spite of Paul George’s 38 points.  And Oklahoma City beat San Antonio 116-104.  22 other teams open their season with games tonight including the Clippers hosting Sacramento.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up on all three major U.S. indexes.  The Dow gained 4 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 rose two thirds.  And the Nasdaq was up 1.3%.  Gold traded $7.30 higher on the Comex at $4,149.90 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $1.23 to $96.59 a barrel.

A judge today ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25b as the result of a jury finding the social media company liable for deceiving users about privacy and content moderation on Facebook.  48 other states settled with Facebook in a nationwide case, but New Mexico chose to take the company to court on its own.  Prosecutors had sought as much as $40b, arguing that Meta would only change its ways if the sum was high enough to affect its stock price.  Meta says such an amount violates due process, is unconstitutional and won’t hold up under appeal.  If New Mexico ultimately prevails, under the state constitution, fines for violations of consumer protection laws go to state education spending. https://apnews.com/article/facebook-penalty-cambridge-analytica-new-mexico-b329f82c3d3db3758a159405acbd4d0e

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The price of fuel, especially diesel is on everyone’s mind.  Though most people don’t buy diesel, we all buy things transported by diesel trucks.  And right now, the lowest local price for diesel is a penny shy of $7 at Horizon Fuel Center in Valley Center.  Everywhere else, it’s closer to $8 with the San Diego County average at $8.44.  Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $6.15, down from a high of $6.42 at the start of the month.  In Riverside County, today’s average price is $5.98.  Nationwide, it’s $4.22.  Today’s lowest local price is $5.34 at Pauma Heritage Quikstop.  In Riverside County, it’s $5.55 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and Costco. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.592887216626245&lng=-117.15893594581978&z=12

Indigenous communities are known for passing down traditions and culture through oral storytelling.  Now, Canada’s Wiikwemkoong tribe in rural Ontario is using a data center to help preserve its heritage.  About the size of a single-car garage, the one-year old data center stores the community’s corporate documents, health data, and security camera recordings.  The First Nation community has been transferring all its information from a data center in Toronto in what it calls a move towards digital sovereignty – a concept European leaders have been pursuing in the face of widespread influence from American Big Tech.  For the Wiikwemkoong, it’s also about asserting authority over their own information after historically being excluded from its collection and use by colonizers.  The Wiikwemkoong prides itself on being Canada’s only “unceded territory”, because it never signed a treaty surrendering its land. https://apnews.com/article/canada-data-center-indigenous-wiikwemkoong-f5c4fd18c5ea3b8ede2b3257120fba35
