LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The Norte Fire in the hills east of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano is now 90% contained at 570 acres.  Evacuation orders have been lifted.  Four homes were destroyed and three others damaged.  No injuries reported.  https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2026/10/16/norte-fire

After years of expectations, Albertsons finally confirmed last week that it will indeed be building a new store in Valley Center on property owned by the San Pasqual Economic Development Corporation at Valley Center Road and Mirar de Valle.  It’ll be the first full service supermarket in Valley Center.  Construction milestones, hiring timelines and opening events will be shared in the months to come. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/albertsons-unveils-plans-for-new-51000-sq-ft-valley-center-store/

The city of Oceanside is having trouble deciding on a new gateway arch for downtown.  Back in April, a contract for over $250k was approved for Graphic Solutions to work with the community to come up with conceptual designs and locations for the sign.  Several sites along Coast Highway were considered but ruled out as unsuitable.  The best location emerged as Mission Avenue at Nevada Street.  The western view frames a view towards Coast Highway and the ocean beyond.  Not everyone likes the location and the likely $1m-plus price tag strikes a nerve with some officials including Mayor Esther Sanchez, who pointed out the ongoing flood control project, the need for Fire Station 8, and rebuilding the 99-year old Pier View Way bridge connecting to the wooden portion of Oceanside Pier as higher priorities.  That long-awaited pier bridge project is still $60m short on funding.  City staffers say the design and location of the gateway sign need to be completed by the end of this year if construction and installation is to be done in time for the 2028 Olympics, which are hoped to bring the city an influx of visitors. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/19/hurdles-may-trip-up-oceansides-plan-to-erect-gateway-arch-for-28-olympics/

The Oceanside City Council is expected tomorrow to ratify a proclamation made last week by City Manager, Jonathan Borrego of a local emergency to improve response to expected El Niño weather conditions through this winter.  The pier, the San Luis Rey River and city infrastructure including sewers, lift stations and some low-lying roads are at risk.  The city has already allocated $8.7m for the Army Corps of Engineers to remove sediment from the San Luis Rey Flood Protection Project.  Under a declared emergency, up to 75% of eligible costs and activities related to storm prep and recovery could be paid for by the California Disaster Assistance Act. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/20/oceanside-declares-emergency-to-prepare-for-historic-el-nino/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained a full percent.  The S&P500 rose 4 tenths of a percent.  And the Nasdaq was up two tenths.  Gold fell $17.40 on the Comex to $4,142.70 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures lost 11 cents, trading at $103.55 a barrel.

General Motors beat economists’ expectation for third quarter earnings.  They also announced a new multiyear stock buyback of $20b.  America’s top automaker just completed a $6b buyback that had been announced in January.  But its stock fell 5% today over concerns about slowing sales and rising costs. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/general-motors-gm-earnings-q3-2026.html

After years of delay, the Transportation Department is set to announce final approval of Boeing’s 737 Max 10 for passenger service.  The model, which can have up to 230 seats, was introduced at the Paris Air Show nine years ago.  Technical and safety concerns slowed its certification.  First deliveries of 737 Max 10s should begin next year. https://apnews.com/article/boeing-737-max-10-certification-faa-duffy-a18eb4a039f37a6f67d40edceb28f52c

Walmart announced today that it will offer a new joint membership, combining Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus memberships into a single $120 per year fee.   That’s reportedly $100 less than standalone memberships, but there is no monthly payment option for the new deal.  The new option give access to Sam’s Club warehouses, free delivery from both chains, a subscription to Peacock or Paramount+ streaming, and 2% back on eligible Sam’s Club purchases.  Both stores will continue to offer standalone options.  Membership fees are an important part of big box retailer profits. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/20/walmart-sams-club-plus-membership.html

Skeptics are weighing in on this week’s charitable announcements by Elon Musk and Anthropic.  Musk said yesterday he’ll give one of his SpaceX shares to every kid in America but provided no details.  Bloomberg reported that he’ll do it through Trump Accounts.  That’s $10b in stock to 73m kids.  But the skeptics point out that he also pledged $6b back in 2021 to end world hunger.  That promise has yet to be fulfilled.  Musk’s announcement came a day after AI tech company, Anthropic said it would put 5% of its stock in what it calls a Public Benefit Fund.  The company’s IPO is scheduled for next month at a valuation that would make that pledge worth $100b.  Anthropic’s co-founders previously vowed to give away 80% of their equity, as well as an employee equity match program that the company says puts a combined 20% of its shares towards the “public good”.  But who defines public good?  With plans to self-administer it as a new division within the company, skeptics call it a step towards the company’s own form of universal basic income tied to the success of the company.  They say both announcements – never mind whether they’re actually followed through, are mainly designed to curry public favor against polls that show Americans are overwhelmingly nervous about the future of AI.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Foreign correspondent and news anchor Christiane Amanpour said yesterday that she’ll be leaving CNN after 43 years.  She became a household name and a role model for Rory Gilmore for her bravery in reporting from war zones and sharp, focused broadcast anchoring.  Amanpour will scale back her work at CNN over the next several months and leave entirely in June.  She didn’t give a reason for her departure, but it comes as Skydance becomes the new parent company of CNN in the Warner Bros Discovery takeover – something Amanpour had previously expressed concerns about. www.morningbrew.com

Almost 160 years ago, the US government decided it was illegal to make hard liquor at home.  The law happened because of taxation.  The feds began taxing distilled spirits in the 1700s to finance the Revolutionary War.  Home distilling was banned almost 100 years later because the majority of home spirit makers weren’t paying taxes.  Yesterday, the Supreme Court said it would reconsider the topic of bathtub gin by agreeing to hear a lawsuit brought by a group of home distillers from Texas who want to do away with the criminal consequences in exchange for paying distillers’ tax.  A ruling is expected in June. www.morningbrew.com
