LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A man who allegedly poisoned his foster mother by providing her with a lethal dose of fentanyl, then allegedly buried her remains at her Valley Center property and began using her identity to siphon hundreds of thousands of dollars from her accounts, has been formally charged with murder by the San Diego District Attorney’s office.  34-year old Cedric Von Ferdinand is accused in the death of 65-year-old Nadine Jett, a retired attorney who was battling pancreatic cancer just before she went missing about three years ago.  Her disappearance prompted sheriff’s investigators to search her 20-acre Oak Creek Road property last year, where they found her buried remains. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/prosecutors-foster-son-poisoned-valley-center-woman-stole-her-identity

A county-wide outage of the 9-1-1 system was reported in Riverside County this morning shortly before 6a.  Residents received phone push alerts of possible disruptions to 9-1-1 and were given an alternate regular phone number to call for emergencies until the problem was fixed.  The disruption was reported across multiple jurisdictions from the Coachella Valley to Corona to Temecula, though some cities reported that their 9-1-1 systems remained operational. https://patch.com/california/banning-beaumont/911-outage-rivco-hampers-emergency-calls-some-cellular-users-what-know

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The World Series begins tonight in Milwaukee with the Brewers hosting Tampa Bay at 5p on Fox.  It’s a rare series that features two teams that have never won a World Series.  The Brewers have been around for 57 seasons and the Rays for 29.  The last time two teams vied for their first World Series win was 1980 when the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Kansas City Royals.  By Major League standards, this year’s competitors are both small market teams.  The Brewers rank 19th in payroll and play in the league’s smallest metro market.  The Rays are 28th in payroll, but have made some shrewd trades in recent years. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50237852/world-series-brewers-rays-first-champions

Good news for Dodgers fans.  Shohei Ohtani will not require surgery to treat his left knee or right arm.  Doctors have prescribed simple rest this off-season and he will return as a two-way player, both pitching and designated hitting next season.  Injuries were affecting his performance this past season.  He was 4 for 22 with no extra-base hits in his first seven postseason games.  His home run in Game 4 of the NLCS was his first since August 18.  On the pitching side, in 2026, Ohtani was 8 and 2 with a 1.79 ERA in his first 14 starts.  But knee and right biceps pain prevented him from pitching after July 3 of the regular season.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50242196/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-not-require-surgery-expected-pitch-2027

In the NFL – Week 7 begins tonight with New England at Chicago at 5p on Prime Video.  The Patriots are in second place in the AFC East at 4 and 2.  Da Behrs have an identical record and are in second place in the NFC North.

In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC’s next game is Saturday hosting the Seattle Sounders.  The Galaxy plays LAFC at BMO stadium on Sunday.

In the NBA – The Lakers beat Golden State 127-105 last night and the Clippers routed Sacramento 121-96 in the season openers for all four teams.  Other winners were Atlanta, Washington, Minnesota, Charlotte, Toronto, Memphis, Indiana, Houston and Portland.

In the WNBA finals – Last night, Atlanta took two games to one lead in the finals, beating Golden State 97-71.  Game 4 is Saturday in Atlanta.

In the NHL – Last night’s winners were Philadelphia and Ottawa.  Twelve games tonight including Anaheim at New Jersey and Los Angeles at the New York Islanders.

In golf – The Butterfield Bermuda Championship teed off this morning.  Adam Schenk is the defending champion.  Ben Kohles, Ben Silverman, and Danny Walker were tied for the lead at 8-under par 63 into the clubhouse with half the field still on the course for round 1.  https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

Bonsall – girls’ JV volleyball at Health Sciences at 3:30p; varsity at Ocean View Christian at 4:30p

Great Oak – girls’ JV golf at a tournament all day; field hockey at Edison in Huntington Beach at 3:30p; football at Martin Luther King at 4:15p

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 2 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down 1 ¼%.  And the Nasdaq was off by 2.4%.  Comex gold futures fell $94.90 to $4,055.10 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $2.12 to $99.27 a barrel.

The rush is on to patch a vulnerability discovered by AI that could affect 70% of the world’s websites.  The FBI’s cyber division warned yesterday that the vulnerabilities could allow malicious sources to remotely execute code in the PHP programming language which powers most websites and web applications.  Governments have been following best practice by taking down websites during work to patch them.  Some services in Great Britain have been temporarily unavailable during due to cybersecurity issues.  Same in Japan.  Finland reports the disruption has been resolved, but that some content is still missing and in the process of being restored.  That’s an example of what experts say will be the ripple effect of this crisis.  Some of the flaws are more than a decade old, dating back to when the website software was created.  According to the PHP Foundation, the vulnerability has been known since 2024.  Because PHP is fundamental to running many websites and applications, fully fixing the problem everywhere in the world could take months or years.  But the most intensive fixing will be over the next few weeks.  As a side note, experts say that while AI helped find the vulnerability, it can also help attackers exploit it.  That’s the reason for the sudden rush for repairs with the PHP Foundation today releasing fixes along with instructions on how to update systems. https://apnews.com/article/php-websites-fbi-europe-vulnerability-a0af9576808a0963efca8df14d4b5183

Six San Diego zip codes made PropertyShark’s annual list of the 100 most-expensive places in the country.  That’s up one from last year.  Rancho Santa Fe was the most expensive of the six at #14 on the list, with a median sale price of $4.4m.  RSF is down from #10 last year and #9 in 2024.  The other five San Diego zips on the list were all beachfront and include Del Mar, Coronado, Solana Beach, Cardiff and La Jolla, which fell from #60 last year to #90 this year.  Atherton in San Mateo County was #1 on this year’s list with a median sale price of $10.7m.  California made up 57% of all Zips on the list.  But that’s down from 61% last year.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/20/6-san-diego-zip-codes-make-list-of-the-nations-priciest-2/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

There is no official word until investigators complete their inquiry into the cause, but a Newport Beach lawyer told the Orange County Register this week that there’s a strong possibility the Norte Fire, which destroyed or damaged seven homes in the hills east of San Clemente last weekend was started by SDG&E equipment.  On Monday, the utility was quick to caution against linking an outage that began moments before the Norte Fire started to its utility equipment.  But Richard Bridgeford, Esq. says “The stars are aligned with what we’ve seen in prior utility-caused fires.”  The Norte Fire began just before noon on Friday and quickly grew to 570 acres, whipped by Santa Ana winds.  Thousands of people were evacuated east of I-5.  Evacuations were lifted by Sunday.  The last time SDG&E equipment was found to have ignited a major wildfire was 2007, when high winds, high temperatures and dry conditions led to the Witch Creek, Guejito and Rice wildfires that destroyed more than 1,300 homes, killed two people and injured 40 firefighters.  Lack of public communication about the Rice Fire led to the creation of Rez Radio 91.3.  Since then, SDG&E has spent more than $6b to underground 335 miles of power lines and replace wooden power poles with steel ones.  All Southern California utilities now use the preventative measure they call Public Safety Power Shutoffs when weather conditions increase the likelihood of power line-sparked wildfires.  The utility is currently seeking approval for a more than 150-mile high-power transmission line through San Diego and Riverside County backcountry. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/19/a-big-wildfire-and-an-sdge-power-outage-what-happened/

With less than two weeks until Election Day, you’ve probably been bombarded with at least several dozen text messages from various candidates and causes.  Text messages are an increasingly popular tool for political campaigns.  An app that blocks spam calls and texts, Robokiller estimated back in 2022 that Americans were receiving 15b political texts.  And it’s gotten worse since then because they’re cheap, and annoying or not, they work.  If you provided your phone number when you registered to vote, campaigns can buy it from counties or states.  They can also get your number and other information including email addresses from other campaigns, political action committees or data brokers.  There are few restrictions on political speech text messages because they’re exempt from Do Not Call Registries that protect you from telemarketing.  If you’re only getting texts seeking donations from one party or side of an issue, that’s because they’re targeting what they know are your interests.  Text campaigns are ramping up volume and frequency this year because of generative AI.  You can try replying “STOP” to get that particular campaign from continuing to contact you, or report it as Spam by forwarding to 7726, or “SPAM”.  Voting early also tends to stop election texts, because the senders are constantly monitoring the voting roles.  And if you believe a text violates Federal Communications Commission rules, you can file an online complaint at www.FCC.gov . https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/16/is-your-phone-being-flooded-with-political-text-messages-heres-what-you-need-to-know/

On this day in music history – October 22,

  • 1966, The Supremes became the first female group to have a #1 album with “The Supremes a Go Go”, which replaced The Beatles’ “Revolver” in the #1 spot.
  • On the same day, The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” entered the charts.  It would reach #1 two months later.  Recorded at four different studios over six months at a cost of over $16k, the recording engineer would later say that the last take sounded exactly like the first.
  • In 1969, Paul McCartney publicly denied the rumors that he was dead.  The most recent clue in the death hoax was that he was the only barefoot Beatle on the “Abbey Road” album cover.  The story that began the rumor was a prank by a writer for The Daily Michigan student paper at The University of Michigan.
  • Also in 1969, “Led Zeppelin II” was released.  It peaked at #1 in the US and Britain and went on to sell about 22m copies.  Critics now say it was one the greatest and most influential rock albums ever recorded.
  • In 1986, musician, actress and New York traffic reporter Jane Dornacker died in crash of WNBC radio’s traffic helicopter.  The pilot survived with serious injuries.  Listeners heard the whole thing live on the air.  Dornacker had survived a similar crash a couple of months earlier.
  • In 1988, Phil Collins began the first of two weeks at #1 with the remake of the Mindbenders 1965 hit “Groovy Kind of Love”.
  • In 1990 Pearl Jam played their first ever concert at The Off-Ramp in Seattle.
  • In 1996 it was announced that The Beatles were now bigger than The Beatles – meaning sales of their back catalog and the new Anthology 1, 2 and upcoming 3 albums would result in sales that year of 20m.  That’s more than the group ever sold in any one year when they were still a group.  And 40% of those sales were to people born after The Beatles broke up in 1970.
  • In 2000, George Michael paid about $2m for the Steinway piano on which John Lennon wrote “Imagine”.

Born this day …

  • In 1942, Bobby Fuller, whose biggest hit was “I Fought the Law”, a song written by Sonny Curtis, of Buddy Holly’s Crickets.  Fuller died under mysterious circumstances in 1966.
  • In 1945, Leslie West, guitarist and leader of Mountain, whose biggest hit was “Mississippi Queen” in 1970.
  • In 1946, Eddie Brigati from The Rascals.
