A Temecula elementary school teacher has been arrested and charged with molesting a student. 57-year old George Vega was arrested yesterday, nearly three weeks after the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office received word that a teacher at Vail Elementary School had “inappropriate contact with a student.”. Vega was placed on administrative leave by the school after a deputy visited the school the evening of May 7.  Vega was been booked into French Valley jail on charges of molesting a minor and lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14. A bomb threat at San Elijo Middle School in the San Marcos district triggered safety protocols and a thorough search of the campus yesterday afternoon.  The Sheriff’s Department was notified of the threat just before 1p.  A “concerning note” had been found in a student restroom during lunch period.  Students were evacuated to a field to allow a classroom search by deputies and bomb sniffing canines, in which nothing of concern was found.  Two sweeps were made before students were allowed back to classrooms and released to their parents. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/unfounded-bomb-threat-at-san-elijo-middle-school-in-san-marcos-under-investigation

One person was been detained in connection with Monday’s stabbing in the 600 block of Richmar Avenue in San Marcos.  The unidentified victim in his 20’s died two hours later at about 7p at a local hospital.  No details release about the suspect as investigators look into possible motives and links to the victim. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/man-stabbed-to-death-in-san-marcos-suspect-detained-by-deputies

Today is National Hamburger Day which sounds like the perfect excuse for specials at local restaurants.  Most have to be accessed through that restaurant’s app.  Farmer Boys loyalty members get a Big Cheeseburger for $4.  Burger King rewards members get a free burger with any $1 purchase.  Habit Burger loyalty members get two Charburgers for the price of one now through Sunday.  Dairy Queen customers get a second Stackburger for 99 cents.  Islands rewards members get Big Wave Burgers with fries for $10.  Wendy’s app users can order a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for a penny with any purchase.  Baker’s Drive-Thru, an Inland Empire chain whose nearest stores are Corona and Riverside is offering free fries and a drink with any burger.  And if you miss out today, not to worry.  National Cheeseburger Day is coming up in September. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/05/27/national-hamburger-day-2025-where-to-find-deals-on-wednesday-may-28/

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – Indiana is now just a game away from going to the NBA championship series.  The Pacers beat the visiting Knicks 130-121 last night.  Tyrese Haliburton led the scoring with 32 points, 15 assists and 12 rebounds.  But his triple double last night also makes him the first NBA player to put up at least 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds without a turnover since the league began keeping track of turnovers in 1977.   The potential elimination game for the Knicks is tomorrow in New York. Tonight, Oklahoma City hosts Game 5 of the Western finals.  They lead three games to one over Minnesota. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/45352997/haliburton-historic-triple-double-keys-pacers-game-4-win

In the NHL playoffs – The Oilers extended their lead over the Stars last night in Dallas by winning Game 4, 4-1.  Game 5 tomorrow is a must-win for Dallas.  Florida could wrap up the Eastern finals with a win over the Hurricanes in Raleigh.  They lead the series three games to one.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the visiting Marlins 8-6.  Luis Arraez drove in the tying and go-ahead runs on singles in the 4th and 5th innings.  Fernando Tatis Jr. homered in the 1st inning.  Jackson Merrill added a solo insurance run on a homer in the 8th.  The Dodgers beat Cleveland 9-5.  Detroit topped the visiting Giants 3-1.  That lifts the Padres back into second place, a game ahead of the Giants and two behind the Dodgers.  The Yankees edged the Angels in Anaheim 3-2.  It was the Angels’ fourth consecutive loss.

Shohei Ohtani became the third Dodger ever to hit 20 home runs in the first 55 games of a season.  Gil Hodges and Cody Bellinger are the other two.  Ohtani had a two-run dinger in the fourth inning last night in Cleveland.  That puts him on pace to hit 60 this season.  The three-time MVP currently leads the Majors in home runs. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45350979/ohtani-becomes-3rd-dodger-ever-reach-20-hrs-55-games

An annual survey by the Federal Reserve shows U.S. households feeling little change in their economic well being over the past year.  The cost of living remains a top concern, but nearly three fourths of the adults surveyed say they were “doing OK or living comfortably.”  https://www.reuters.com/world/us/most-us-households-say-finances-all-right-even-inflation-still-bites-fed-survey-2025-05-28/

Ford is recalling nearly 1.1m vehicles over a rearview camera software issue.  It involves some 2021 through 2024 trucks, Edge, Escape, Mach-E, Mustang, and Lincoln Nautilus models.  Ford says it is aware of one alleged minor crash due to a glitch than cause the image from the rearview camera to delay, freeze or not display.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has more than three dozen such complaints on just the-F150 pickup.  An over-the-air software update of the entire operating system for the car’s dashboard, infotainment and control apps will be made available through Ford dealers.  Letters will be mailed to owners of affected vehicles by June 16.  A second letter will be sent once the software remedy is available later this year. https://www.claimsjournal.com/news/national/2025/05/28/330831.htm

The third of Detroit’s traditional Big Three automakers, Stellantis today announced that its North American chief, Antonio Filosa will be the company’s new CEO.  The former head of the Jeep division replaces, Carlos Tavares, who stepped down in November because of falling profits and poor sales.  Filosa, an Italian national will take over as CEO June 23, when he will announce a new leadership team.  The company controls 14 brands. LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

He wasn’t the biggest rock star, but Rick Derringer made a wide mark, working in many areas of music and with many other artists.  He died Monday evening in Ormond Beach, Florida after several months of failing health.  Derringer’s six-decade career began in his teens in his native Ohio when he sang lead on The McCoys’ smash chart topper, “Hang On Sloopy” in the summer of 1965.  He had a solo hit in the 70s with “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo,” and at about the same time was with The Edgar Winter Group for their hits, “Frankenstein” and “Free Ride”.  He worked with Edgar’s brother Johnny Winter as guitarist and producer.  He produced Weird Al Yankovic’s first album, did session work with artists including Steely Dan, Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply, KISS, Meatloaf and Barbra Streisand, and wrote and produced for others including Cyndi Lauper.  In his later years, he toured with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band and Peter Frampton.   Rick Derringer was 77. https://variety.com/2025/music/news/rick-derringer-hang-on-sloopy-real-american-writer-dead-1236411000/

Texas is the latest state to enact an age-verification law for app stores.  Big tech lobbied against it.  But Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill requiring app stores to verify user ages and obtain parental approval before any minor can download software or make in-app purchases.  Utah was the first to enact such a law.  Apple argues that such laws require new infrastructure for submission and storage of personal information, which then becomes a hacking target. https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/texas-enacts-age-verification-law-for-app-stores-190603522.html

On this day in music history – May 28,

  • 1966 Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had the #1 album in the U.S. with “What Now My Love”.  The group set a then-record for having four albums simultaneously in the US Top Ten.
  • On the same day, Percy Sledge began the first of two weeks at #1 on the singles chart with “When a Man Loves a Woman”.  It was recorded in a rather unusual way.  The song had no title or lyrics when the session began.  Sledge improvised the lyrics with little pre-planning, using the melody as a guide for rhythm and phrasing.  His performance had others at the session convinced Sledge had written them out ahead of time.
  • In 1968, Credence Clearwater Revival released their debut album.  Known for years as The Golliwogs, their recording contract with Fantasy Records offered them the chance to record … IF they changed their name.  Their 8-minute cover of the Dale Hawkins song “Suzie Q” was the band’s only top 40 hit not written by the group’s guitarist and lead singer John Fogerty.
  • In 1976 the Allman Brothers Band temporarily disbanded after Greg Allman testified against road manager Scooter Herring, who’d been charged with drug trafficking.  He was sentenced to 75 years in prison.
  • In 1983, Irene Cara started a six-week run at #1 with the theme from the movie “Flashdance … What a Feeling”.
  • Also, in 1983, the Us Festival here in Southern California – a much slicker and commercialized version of the music festivals in the late 1960s and early 70s featured The Clash, U2, David Bowie, The Pretenders, Van Halen, Stray Cats, Men at Work, Judas Priest, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, INXS, Joe Walsh, Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne.  Over 750k people attended.
  • In 2000, Britney Spears had the #1 album with “Oops, I Did It Again”.
  • In 2015 Michael Jackson’s former home, the 2,700-acre Neverland Ranch in Santa Ynez was listed for sale at $100m.

Born this day …

  • in 1910, T-Bone Walker.
  • In 1917, blues violinist and member of Jefferson Starship, Papa John Creach,
  • in 1944 Gladys Knight.
  • In 1945 John Fogerty.
  • In 1949 the Plasmatics’ Wendy O. Williams.
  • In 1968, Australian pop star, Kylie Mingoue.
