LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Gunshots were fired this morning at an FBI raid on Wilt Road in Fallbrook. Neighbors say they heard shots around 2a in the 2300 block of Wilt Road and the sound of agents on a loudspeaker calling for a woman identified as Ramona Huntington to exit the residence. Agents were still on the scene at 11a and the FBI field office in San Diego had yet to release any information. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/07/17/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanfbi-raid-on-wilt-road-prompts-gunshots-standoff/79376.html
Plenty of changes are coming to North County hospitals. UC San Diego Health and Palomar Health have signed a letter of intent to form a joint powers authority that would “oversee the operations of Palomar Health and enable shared investment in services and infrastructure.” Both entities have had their issues lately. Palomar has been struggling with significant financial losses that have put it sideways with lenders. UC San Diego Health faced a worker strike this week in protest of more than 200 layoffs driven by concerns over unfavorable financial trends that are continually pushing costs beyond reimbursements. Realizing that cost-cutting alone is not a long-term survival strategy, all of the region’s major health systems are seeking to grow in North County, where the proportion of well-insured residents is more favorable. Sharp HealthCare is working on a partnership with Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside and Scripps Health announced it will build a new hospital in San Marcos, pausing its plans to rebuild Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. Both organizations are following a move north by Kaiser Permanente, which opened its San Marcos Medical Center in 2023. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/07/23/palomar-health-and-uc-san-diego-health-sign-letter-of-intent/
The Lazy Dog Restaurant at Temecula’s Promenade mall has announced it will be closing in September when their current lease expires. The restaurant has been there for 15 years. According to corporate headquarters, “A new Lazy Dog Restaurant will be opening nearby soon.” The only new location currently listed as coming soon on their website is Miramar in San Diego. https://patch.com/california/temecula/popular-restaurant-inside-promenade-mall-closing-what-know
A scaled-down version of a plan to bring a huge warehouse project to Hemet has once again been denied by the Hemet City Council. The 3-2 vote at the council’s July 14 meeting followed hours of public testimony from supporters and foes of the Newland Simpson project. Council members had unanimously voted against the proposal back in April. At that time it called for two warehouses totaling 1.19 million square feet to be built on a 75-acre site near the junction of Warren and Simpson roads and Domenigoni Parkway in southwest Hemet. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/07/23/hemet-warehouse-project-once-again-rejected-by-city-council/

President Trump yesterday unveiled a trade deal with Japan that includes a 15% tariff on goods made there and imported into the U.S. That’s lower than the previously threatened 25%, but still high for a major trading partner. The deal calls for Japan to invest $550b in the U.S. with the U.S. receiving 90% of the profits, according to Trump. Japanese auto stocks got a big boost on the announcement. www.morningbrew.com
Amazon is acquiring Bee, the maker of a bracelet that records everything it hears. Its AI transcribes all of your conversations and generates daily summaries, to-do lists and other options. It’s available as an inexpensive wearable or as a free Apple Watch app, plus a $19 a month subscription for either. Bee doesn’t have the best reviews. The Wall Street Journal’s lead personal tech specialist said the privacy trade-off is not worth it. So, why does Amazon want Bee? Probably for the data it gathers. www.morningbrew.com
“60 Minutes” reporter Tanya Simon has been tapped to be the new executive producer of the show after longtime producer Bill Owens resigned earlier this year over President Trump’s lawsuit against CBS parent company Paramount Global, which settled for $16m – an action that some believe is part of the reason Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” is not being renewed for next year after he characterized the settlement by the owners of his network as submitting to blackmail. Simon has been acting EP since Owens’ departure. https://m.imdb.com/fr/news/ni65394843/?ref_=nwc_art_perm
McDonald’s may have closed its CosMc’s spinoff chain, but it’s planning to test some CosMc’s menu drinks at 500 of its restaurants in Wisconsin, Colorado and surrounding areas. Fast food chains and places like Starbucks and Dunkin have been adding fun, colorful drinks to win over younger customers. The new coffee drinks, refreshers and flavored sodas at McDonald’s will include Creamy Vanilla Cold Brew, Strawberry Watermelon refresher, Toasted Vanilla Frappe, Sprite Lunar Splash, and Popping Tropic Refresher plus some others not yet specified. McDonald’s same store sales fell 3.6% in the first quarter of this year. But sales of more modern items like the recently reintroduced snack wraps have been a bright spot for Mickey D’s with same-store sales up 7% so far in this third quarter even though the menu item only came back two weeks ago. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/24/mcdonalds-tests-cosmcs-drinks.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Pro wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, whose charisma and shirt-ripping showmanship brought the theatrical sports genre to new heights of mainstream popularity, died today in Florida at the age of 71. First responders had taken him to a hospital suffering cardiac arrest where he was pronounced dead at 11:17a Eastern time. Hogan had become a fixture in Republican politics in recent years , appearing at last year’s GOP convention, ripping open his shirt just like in his WWF prime to hype Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/obituaries/hulk-hogan-wrestling-icon-pop-culture-mainstay-dies-71-rcna220822
Columbia University has agreed to pay $220m to resolve the Trump administration’s claims that it failed to protect Jewish students from harassment. The deal is expected to restore most of the federal funding that had been taken away over the situation. www.morningbrew.com
Inefficient tires are costing California drivers over $180 for additional gasoline over the life of a new set. According to a report published today by the Coalition for Clear Air and the Consumer Federation of America, standards requiring replacement tires to be as efficient as the ones a vehicle came with when it was new would save vehicle owners money while reducing pollution. AB 844, enacted in 2003, directed the California Energy Commission to set standards for aftermarket tires by 2007. Eighteen years later, that still hasn’t been done. Vehicle manufacturers usually equip new vehicles with fuel efficient tires because it’s a cost-effective way to meet fuel efficiency standards. But there are no standards for fuel efficiency on replacement tires, many of which have higher rolling resistance than a vehicle’s original tires, which requires more energy to make them roll. That’s one reason you may buy new tires and see your fuel economy decline a little. Efficient replacement tires would yield about a 3.1% fuel savings in gasoline vehicles and 4% for EVs, while collectively decreasing nitrogen oxides in the air by 1,490 tons, particulate matter by 106 tons, and carbon dioxide by 2.4m metric tons per year. The cost savings to the consumer from buying more efficient, but admittedly more-expensive tires would be recouped in six months on a vehicle that needs new tires roughly every four years. (CCA and CFA media release)
