LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A man was found dead inside a Ramona home last evening following an hours-long SWAT standoff. Sheriffs deputies and Escondido Police entered the home on Royal Vista Drive just before 6:30p and found the unidentified man inside a closed-door closet. It all began around 9a when a 9-1-1 call was received requesting deputies to make a welfare check on the man. First responders contacted the man through an open window. He did not respond and retreated behind a closed door. Deputies reported hearing a sound like “the racking of a gun” and the standoff began. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/03/elementary-school-in-ramona-evacuated-during-swat-standoff-at-nearby-home/
A fire in Hemet yesterday afternoon forced evacuations. Its forward progress was halted at 120 acres by about 4:40p. Mountain View High School served as the evacuation center for those living south of Fruitvale, east of Eason, north of Menlo and west of Cawston Avenues. Evacuation orders have been lifted. The “Myers Fire” broke out near Rose Road and Myers Street. Its unclear how many structures were threatened or if there were any injuries. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/09/03/myers-fire-burns-90-acres-forces-evacuations-near-hemet/
CHP responded to a traffic collision involving blocked southbound lanes near De Luz Road and Dos Cameos last night. It was reported around 9:07p and sparked a small fire that was quickly put out. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/28/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spantraffic-collision-in-de-luz-involves-fire-blocks-southbound-lanes/79735.html
Oceanside PD could begin using drones to crack down on illegal use of fireworks. City staff is working out a new program to deploy drones with cameras and implement stiff new fines for those observed setting off illegal fireworks within the city. A former Oceanside fire chief said this year’s July 4th illegal fireworks were the most he’d seen “in a long, long time”. Crack downs in the past have been unsuccessful because of the time it takes to respond to reports of illegal fireworks. Drone programs have worked weill in other cities. One in Elk Grove, near Sacramento uses three to four drones throughout the city each July 4th. Anyone spotted launching fireworks can be cited and fined up to $1k per violation. They had to put a cap on it because the first year of the program, one violator chalked up $300k in fines. As a result of the program, Elk Grove has seen a one third reduction in calls for service related to fireworks. The concept has yet to be voted on by Oceanside city council. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/30/oceanside-considers-new-tactics-for-fighting-illegal-fireworks/
Jay Leno’s star power wasn’t enough to persuade a California legislative committee to pass a measure to allow owners of classic cars like him to be exempted from the state’s rigorous smog-check requirements. The Assembly Appropriations Committee last week blocked Bakersfield Republican Sen. Shannon Grove’s SB 712 – the so-called “Leno’s Law” from advancing for a full vote. Leno had testified in support of the measure in Sacramento earlier this year that it would preserve and benefit California’s classic car industry with little effect on air quality. The committee did not provide a reason for killing the bill at Friday’s hearing, which quickly and with little fanfare announced the fate of 260 other bills that had been placed on the committee’s so-called “suspense file.” Seventy other bills also were killed without explanation. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/09/03/classic-cars-will-still-need-a-smog-test-in-california-after-lawmakers-reject-jay-leno-bill/

Last night was a good game for Chapman not to miss. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained two thirds of a percent. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up more than a half percent. Phillilps 66 is beginning the process of shutting down one of Southern California’s major oil refineries in the next few days. The complete closure of its twin facilities in Carson and Wilmington is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year. Eliminating the 139k barrel per day output of the Los Angeles refineries will tighten fuel supplies and likely cause retail gasoline prices to rise. The average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County has increased 14 cents over the past two weeks to $4.69, according to the Auto Club. The nationwide average is currently $3.20. Phillips announced the coming closures last year. Earlier this year, Valero said it will close its Bencia refinery in Northern California by 2026. To accommodate the oil industry, Gov. Newsom and the California Energy Commission have made concessions including postponing until 2030 the imposition of fines on oil refiners the state determines are making excessive profits. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/02/refinery-shutdown-in-los-angeles-area-may-start-as-soon-as-this-week-what-does-it-mean-for-you-at-the-pump/
Spirit Airlines today announced it is cutting flights in 12 cities as part of its latest restructuring. United Airlines said it is adding flights in case Spirit “suddenly goes out of business”. Direct budget rival Frontier is also planning to add flights aimed at Spirit’s customer base. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/04/spirit-airlines-cuts-flights-in-12-cities-as-united-rivals-circle.html
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. doubled down on false claims about vaccines during Senate testimony today. He cited a newly-appointed member of a key government vaccine panel saying that mRNA vaccines are a dangerous risk to people. Numerous studies have shown that they are safe and effective. Kennedy has already cancelled funding for mRNA shot development and gutted the CDC vaccine panel. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Kennedy got into a shouting match over whether anyone can still walk into a pharmacy and get a Covid shot. Warren ended saying, “You clearly are taking away vaccines.” https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/04/rfk-jr-spreads-vaccine-misinformation-during-congressional-testimony.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Fashion powerhouse, Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91. He had missed Fashion Week in Milan for the first time earlier this summer to recover from an undisclosed condition. A major event had been in the planning stages to celebrate 50 years of his signature Giorgio Armani fashion house. He first put Italian ready-to-wear style on the international fashion map in the 1970s. His fashion vision was that of easygoing elegance with attention to detail. He dressed the rich and famous for decades. The Armani empire is currently worth over $10b and isn’t confined to clothing and accessories. It includes home furnishings, perfumes, cosmetics, books, flowers and chocolates. He personally owned several bars, clubs, a basketball team, more than 20 restaurants worldwide and two hotels – one in Milan and the other in Dubai. https://apnews.com/article/italy-obit-giorgio-armani-bb4b91756214c456fd5db14216a91b75
With the end of Labor Day weekend, the summer movie season is officially over. According to a Box Office Mojo-sourced analysis by the New York Times, it was the worst summer movie season since 1981. This year was particularly lacking in blockbusters. The top five films earned a total of $1.6b, compared to last year’s top five, which grossed $2.1b. The takeaway is that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to mass-market with so many media alternatives available. That causes studios to rely on franchises with a proven history. That’s code for sequels. But almost all of the Hollywood franchises are so overworked, they’re not performing like they used to. This summer’s Jurassic Park and Marvel films all performed worse that their predecessors. The trend is so bad, it could become permanent. A large portion of American movie lovers may give up going to theaters. www.morningbrew.com
Artificial Intelligence may not be good for job security, but it’s great for the corporate bottom line. Wells Fargo boasts about trimming its workforce in favor of AI for the past 20 straight quarters. Its stock is up 228% in that time. Bank of America has let 88k employees go over the past 15 years. Its stock is up 95% since 2020. The trend is only accelerating. According to HR Dive, 34% of CEOs plan to announce layoffs in the next 12 months. That’s the 5th straight quarter that percentage has risen. www.morningbrew.com
The ability to know when an avocado is ripe is something that those of us in North County are born with. If not, you learned about it by accidentally stepping on them in groves throughout Fallbrook, DeLuz, Valley Center and Escondido. In the UK, not so much. That’s why British grocery chain Tesco is testing avocado ripeness scanners in some of its stores. The scanners use infrared to detect ripeness. At an average retail price of about $2 (US) per pound, it’s only fair you know if your avocado is ripe or not. www.morningbrew.com
