SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres had yesterday off.  The Pirates completed their sweep of the visiting Dodgers 5-3 yesterday.  The Royals edged the visiting Angels 4-3.  Weekend series begin today with the Padres at Colorado, the Dodgers at Baltimore, San Francisco at St. Louis, Arizona hosting Boston, and the Angels hosting the A’s.

In the NFL – Last night in Philadelphia, the regular season began with the defending champion Eagles holding on through a scoreless fourth quarter to win over the visiting Cowboys 24-20.  Dallas committed the only turnover.  Philly held the ball ten minutes longer.  Otherwise, the stats were pretty even.  The Chargers host Kansas City tonight.  That’ll be streamed on YouTube.  The Rams host Houston Sunday on CBS.

On Wednesday, the West Coast Conference and UCSD announced the Division I school will join the WCC which already includes USD and other small, private faith-based institutions.  With well over 33k students, UCSD is by far the largest school in the WCC.  USD has just under 6k students. The WCC is reportedly also trying to get UC Santa Barbara interested to replace Gonzaga, which is joining the new Pac-12 along with San Diego State and four other Mountain West defectors next year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/03/uc-san-diego-to-leave-big-west-for-west-coast-conference/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks fell on bad jobs news from the Labor Department.  The Dow was off by two thirds of a percent.  The S&P 500 dropped over a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was down a quarter percent.  Gold shot up $47.20 on the Comex to $3,653.90 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $1.74 to $61.74 a barrel.

The jobs market showed weakness in today’s Labor Department numbers with 22k jobs added in August.  Revised numbers for June show the economy actually lost jobs that month.  With very little labor growth since April, unemployment inched up to 4.3% – the highest it’s been since coming off the pandemic spike in 2021.  For the first time in more than four years, there are more people looking for work than there are job openings.  Today’s weak jobs report almost guarantees a cut by the Fed in the prime lending rate this month.   https://www.npr.org/2025/09/05/nx-s1-5529937/economy-jobs-trump-bls

Mortgage rates just had their biggest one-day drop in years, with the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate dropping 16 basis points today to 6.29%.  That’s the lowest it’s been since last October.  The rate had peaked at 7.08% in May.  Some lenders are doing business in the high 5% range.  On a median-priced home with 20% down, the difference between today’s rate and 7% is about $170 a month.  Here in Southern California, where home prices are much higher, it’s more like several hundred a month.  Major homebuilder stocks reacted favorably.  Most gained several percent today.  www.cnn.com

In the penalty phase of Google’s anti-trust case involving the Chrome browser, US District Judge Amit Mehta stopped short of ordering Google to sell off Chrome.  He did order an end to exclusive deals making Google the default search engine on phones and other devices.  Google will also have to share some of its search data with third parties and establish a technology oversight committee to monitor compliance with the judge’s order for the next six years. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/02/nx-s1-5478625/google-chrome-doj-antitrust-ruling

But wait, there’s more!  Google was hit with a 2.95b Euro anti-trust fine by the European Commission today for anti-competitive practices in its lucrative Adtech business.  This is the fourth penalty issued in a decade-long fight with EU anti-trust regulators and comes at a time when President Trump has threatened to retaliate against the European Union for any push against American big tech. https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/05/tech/google-eu-antitrust-fine-adtech

Spirit Airlines has announced it will cease service to San Diego after October 4.  Other carriers serve the markets Spirit had been flying to out of San Diego this summer.  San Diego is one of the locations the budget airline is giving up as it restructures under its second bankruptcy in a year. https://www.kpbs.org/news/economy/2025/09/04/spirit-airlines-to-stop-service-at-san-diego-international-airport-in-october
