LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A Temecula man died following an assault late Saturday night, and authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.  According Sheriff’s deputies, a routine patrol from the Southwest Sheriff’s Station led to the discovery of 35-year-old George Fresquez IV lying unresponsive in the roadway on Pechanga Parkway near Wolf Valley Road at 11:50p on Saturday.  Deputies immediately rendered medical aid, but Fresquez succumbed to traumatic injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.  Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.  The suspect in the assault was identified as 39-year-old Alex Leyva of Vista.  Leyva was later located and taken into custody.  Investigators determined that Fresquez had initially been assaulted in the roadway and left incapacitated before being hit by a vehicle traveling south on Pechanga Parkway. The driver of the vehicle cooperated with authorities and was later released.  Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision. https://www.newsbreak.com/ktla-1589741/4220244259939-southern-california-man-charged-after-deadly-assault-in-temecula

Earlier Saturday, CHP and firefighters responding to a car fire in the area of Sandia Creek Drive and De Luz Road discovered a dead body inside the vehicle once the fire was knocked down.  Sheriff’s homicide took over the investigation with the cause and manner of death, as well as the identity of the victim yet to be made public. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/person-killed-in-single-vehicle-fiery-crash-in-fallbrook

Oceanside’s community cable TV station may have received its last support from city funds.  The city council approved a one-time $175k payment to KOCT last week.  The operation, which broadcasts city council and commission meetings had requested $250k.  City officials made it clear they do not intend to continue funding the station, noting that most cities live stream council and other meetings and record them using in-house services.  KOCT’s five-year contract runs through June 30, 2027. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/08/oceanside-to-end-funding-to-local-cable-tv-station-oks-one-time-175000-payment/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres started off their series against the Rockies poorly, getting shut out 3-0 on Friday, but came back with 10-8 and 8-1 wins Saturday and yesterday.  In yesterday’s game, Dylan Cease got the win with five innings pitched, and Manny Machado hit his 23rd home run of the season.  The Dodgers lost two out of three in Baltimore, avoiding a sweep with yesterday’s 5-2 win, thanks largely to two home runs by Shohei Ohtani and strong pitching by Clayton Kershaw.  The Giants lost two out of three in St. Louis.  Arizona won two out of three from the visiting Red Sox.  And the Angels lost two out of three to the visiting Athletics, including 10-4 and 17-4 drubbings Friday and Saturday.  In the NL West, the Padres are now one game behind the first-place Dodgers and six games ahead of the 3rd place Giants.  Today, San Diego hosts Cincinnati, the Dodgers host Colorado, San Francisco hosts Arizona, and the Angels host Minnesota.

In the NFL – Week 1 concludes tonight with Minnesota at Chicago on ABC.  Yesterday’s winners were Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Indiana, Las Vegas, Arizona, Washington, Jacksonville, Denver, San Francisco, Green Bay, Buffalo, the Rams and Pittsburgh over the Jets 34-32 with four touchdown passes by Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in his debut with the team.

In college football – No upsets in the Top ten.  #12 Arizona State lost to unranked Mississippi State.  USC stomped Georgia Southern 59-20.  UNLV beat UCLA 30-23.  Washington State topped San Diego State 36-13.

In the WNBA – The Sparks lost on Friday at Atlanta and beat Dallas yesterday 91-77.  Yesterday’s other winners were Indiana and Las Vegas.  Just one game tonight – Connecticut at Atlanta.   LA and Seattle are the last two teams vying for a playoff spot.  The LA Sparks are at Phoenix and Seattle Storm host Golden State tomorrow.  https://www.espn.com/wnba/schedule

Serena Williams, another venture capitalist and Warner Bros. Discovery have invested in the women’s 3-on-3 basketball league known as Unrivaled.  The cash infusion boosts the league’s capitalization from $95m last year to $340m now.  Other individual investors include Billie Jean King, Steph Curry, Coco Gauff and Olympic sinner Michael Phelps. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/08/serena-williams-unrivaled-investment-league-value.html

In hockey – The NHL preseason begins Saturday, September 20.

In Major League Soccer – The Galaxy and Dynamo tied at 1 in Houston on Saturday.  This coming Saturday, the Galaxy will play the Sounders in Seattle, LAFC plays the San Jose Earthquakes in Santa Clara, and San Diego FC hosts Minnesota at Snapdragon Stadium. https://www.espn.com/soccer/schedule/_/date/20250908/league/usa.1

In racing – Denny Hamlin started in the pole position and won the NASCAR Cup playoff race at Worldwide Technology Raceway.

In tennis – at the US Open, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner in yesterday’s men’s finals to win his second U.S. Open and sixth major title.  Both had easily won matches leading up to the yesterday’s title match, showing that men’s tennis currently consists of Alcaraz and Sinner, with everybody else just minor contenders.  On Saturday, Arnyna Sabalenda beat Amanda Anisimova in straight sets to claim the women’s singles title.  It was her first US Open and fourth grand slam title. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/sep/06/aryna-sabalenka-sweeps-aside-amanda-anisimova-to-retain-us-open-title https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/46186523/us-open-2025-alcaraz-mens-champion-sinner-final

President Trump’s visit to yesterday’s men’s finals was greeted with loud boos from the crowd on several occasions.  Many of those attending the match missed Trump’s emergence from his suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the national anthem before the delayed start of play, unable to gain entry due to increased security.  They also missed the start of the match.  It’s unclear what proportion of crowd reaction was political and what was due to the inconvenience and disruption caused by Trump’s presence.  Observers say Trump appeared indifferent to the major points in the match between Alcaraz and Sinner. https://apnews.com/article/trump-us-open-sporting-events-boos-5a80b02c78403f1f2f87a30852ffb0f5

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, attendance was almost double that of Labor Day weekend.  “The Conjuring: Last Rites” debuted at #1 with $83m in ticket sales – accounting for about two thirds of all movie-going this weekend.  The re-release of “Hamilton” opened on half as many screens in second place with $10m.  Now in its 5th week of release, “Weapons” dropped to 3rd place with $5.3m, followed by “Freakier Friday”, “Caught Stealing” and “The Roses”.  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W36/

McDonald’s Extra Value meals are back as of today.  For a limited time, they’re offering an $8 Big Mac meal that comes with medium fries and a medium drink, and a $5 Sausage McMuffin with Egg meal that comes with hash browns and a small coffee.  Several other menu items can be ordered as Extra Value Meals at about a 15% savings for the bundle.  Snack Wraps will remain on the menu through the end of the year.  This promotion first began as far back as 1991 and was last used in 2019.  McDonald’s and other fast food chains have been concerned about a marked decline in low-income customers, which they view as critical to their bottom lines. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2025/09/08/mcdonalds-menu-extra-value-meals-big-mac-mcmuffin/85995106007/
