LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The foster son of the woman whose body was found buried on her ranch in Valley Center earlier this year was ordered yesterday to stand trial on nearly three dozen felony counts of ID fraud. 33-year old Cedric Von Ferdinand is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the bank account of 65-year old Nadine Jett, giving himself power of attorney, and transferring her property to his name. He’d been acting as caregiver for Jett who’d been battling pancreatic cancer just before going missing about 18 months ago. The circumstances of her death remain uncertain and no arrests have been made for that. Public Notary, Raymond Joseph Alto from Escondido is also implicated in connection with alleged forgeries of Jett’s signature. Both men are being bound over for trial. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/trial-ordered-for-foster-son-accused-of-stealing-dead-valley-center-womans-id
Higher than normal surf swept two people off the North Jetty at Oceanside Harbor yesterday. Seven lifeguards along with fire personnel responded just after 10a. Surfers assisted the pair until lifeguards arrived. One was close to drowning when rescued and was transported to a trauma center. The other received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. This incident came just four days after lifeguards rescued five people from the ocean south of the Oceanside Pier, who’d apparently been hit by a rogue wave. Two had to be hospitalized. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/09/oceanside-lifeguards-rescue-2-swept-off-jetty-into-ocean-by-big-waves/

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost to the visiting Reds 4-2 yesterday on a two-run homer in the 9th by Tyler Stephenson. The Dodgers beat Colorado 7-2. The Giants beat the Diamondbacks 5-2. The Angels stomped the visiting Twins 12-2. Kyle Hendricks threw 7 shutout innings and all of the Angels runs came with two outs. Only a 9th inning homer by relief pitcher Ryan Fitzgerald kept the game from being a shutout.
In last night’s 9-3 win over the Mets, Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber hit his 50th home run of the season. He’s only the second Philly to ever do that and the first National League player to do it this season. https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401697074
In the NFL – Philadelphia’s Jalen Carter has been fined $57,222 for spitting on Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in their Week 1 game. That’s the equivalent of his paycheck for the game. The league considers it the same as a one-game suspension with time served. The heavy fine sends a message about the increasing incidence of spitting on other players. The Eagles could also impose its own discipline on Carter in Sunday’s Super Bowl rematch against Kansas City. https://apnews.com/article/jalen-carter-fined-spitting-dak-prescott-2531274e71400c05d1227d23a2b2f90c
In college football – Changes in this week’s AP Top 25 include Oregon gained two positions to #4, Georgia falling two to #6, Florida State rising four places to #10, Clemson falling four to #12, Oklahoma up 5 to #13, Tennessee up 7 to #15, and Michigan falling 8 places to #23. No changes in the top three rankings – Ohio State at #1, followed by Penn State and LSU. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings
Week 3 begins tomorrow with NC State at Wake Forest. UCLA has a game Friday hosting New Mexico.
In the NBA – Preseason games begin October 2.
In the WNBA – The Las Vegas Aces win streak is now 15 games. In last night’s 92-61 victory over the Chicago Sky, the Aces’ Jewell Loyd became the 16th WNBA player to reach 6k career points. Las Vegas will clinch 2nd seed and home-court advantage at least through the semifinals if they win against the Sparks in Los Angeles tomorrow or if Atlanta loses at Connecticut tonight. https://apnews.com/article/sky-aces-score-84016014bc9f0462af7156001b76d883

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 6 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was up a third of a percent. The Nasdaq gained a quarter percent. Comex gold fell a dollar to $3,681.20 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.38 to $64.01 a barrel.
A federal judge yesterday blocked President Trump’s efforts to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook by allowing her to remain in her position while her court case against Trump proceeds. That means she’ll be part of this month’s Fed vote in which it’s likely interest rates will be rolled back a quarter percent. It’s a blow to the administration’s efforts to assert control over the traditionally independent Fed. If Trump can replace Cook, he may have a 4-3 majority on the Fed’s governing board. He’s pledged to only appoint Fed governors who support lower interest rates. Yesterday’s ruling will almost certainly be appealed by the White House. www.apnews.com
In another rush job, the Supreme Court will quickly consider whether the President has power to impose sweeping tariffs. Some have called into question legislation Trump is invoking to declare his emergency right to bypass Congress in enacting tariffs. www.apnews.com
SDG&E recently scored #28 out of 30 electric utilities in the region is a pair of J.D. Power studies. The only electricity providers that scored lower than SDG&E’s 652 out of 1k points were Hawaiian Electric and Northern California’s Pacific Gas & Electric. A spokesperson at J.D. Powers said that “While customers trust their electric and gas utilities to deliver reliable service, they do not feel their utilities are going the extra mile to help them by keeping costs down, delivering personalized, communications, demonstrating commitment to the environment or focusing on innovation”. According to the California Legislative Analyst’s Office, average rates for the three biggest investor-owned utilities in the state increased between 48% and 67% from 2019 to 2023. SDG&E rates are consistently near the highest in the U.S. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/05/sdge-finishes-near-the-bottom-of-j-d-power-rankings/
After remodeling just four of its restaurants and country stores in the new, modern design that got the chain in so much trouble with the public over its revised logo last month, Cracker Barrel has suspended its current schedule for remodeling. Customer feedback on the four remodeled stores has been as negative as was ditching “Uncle Hershel” from the Cracker Barrel logo. That got reversed. Now, the planned remodeling of up to 30 of the company’s 660 restaurants this year is off as well. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/09/cracker-barrel-restaurant-remodels-logo-controversy.html

Apple unveiled new iPhone 17 models yesterday along with new ear pods and the Apple Watch Series 11. It was Apple’s biggest launch event of the year and includes the most changes to an iPhone in a while, although experts say the changes are still just incremental and that major. They do not include as much AI as rumored. The iPhone 17 Air is thinner and lighter than other Apple phones thanks to a titanium body. It starts at $999. The new entry level 17 is still $799, but has a slightly larger screen, higher refresh rate, improved display and a new camera. The iPhone 17 Pro is $100 more at $1,099, but includes twice the previous memory space at 256GB. iPhone Pro Max begins at $1,199 and now has upgrades to as much as 2TB of storage space. The new AirPods Pro 3 have improved sound quality and noise cancelling, and can translate conversations in foreign languages in real time. They’re $249 – same as the model they replace. There are three new Series 11 watches priced the same as the models they replace. Preorders for new iPhone 17s will be accepted beginning Friday. They’ll be in stores a week from Friday. IOS 26 will be available as a free software update this coming Monday. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/09/live-updates-apple-event-iphone17-airpods-ios26.html

A non-stop flight between San Diego and Amsterdam, launched just a few months ago by KLM is being suspended beginning late next month through February. It was supposed to be year-round, three times a week. The change appears to be due to weak demand during the fall and winter. The only other non-stop fights to Europe out of San Diego are British Airways to London and Lufthansa to Munich. A recent forecast by the research firm Tourism Economics predicts an 8.2% decline in international arrivals in 2025. The sharpest drop is visitors from Canada – demonstrating a clear link to the trade and tariff wars. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/09/san-diegos-latest-european-nonstop-will-be-suspended-for-several-months/
