Yankees captain Aaron Judge belted two home runs in this first tow at-bats in last night’s 9-3 win over Detroit.  At 361, that ties him with Joe DiMaggio for fourth place on the franchise all-time home run list.  Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig are still ahead of Judge. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46229060/aaron-judge-ties-joe-dimaggio-4th-yankees-home-run-list

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  Coming off yesterday’s record high, the Dow fell four tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up a small fraction.  The Nasdaq gained four tenths of a percent.  Gold traded $14.20 higher on the Comex at $3,687.60 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 20 cents at $62.57 a barrel.

A major, but not-so-well-known bank that was a key provider of subprime auto loans has collapsed amid allegations of fraud.  Tricolor Holdings also operates a chain of used car dealerships in the Southwest including Tricolor Auto, Ganas, and Ganas Ye.  The company filed for bankruptcy yesterday.  But unlike most companies that use the process to restructure and stay in business, Tricolor plans to liquidate.  Tricolor is the second subprime auto lender in trouble in recent weeks.  Automotive Credit Corp paused all new loans indefinitely just over a month ago.  The parent company of Kelley Blue Book reports that currently just under 14% of auto loans nationwide go to subprime buyers.  Almost all are used car loans.  There’s concern that Tricolor’s bankruptcy could have ripple effects in the loan industry.  Large banks often back smaller ones.  JP Morgan Chase, Fifth Third Bankcorp and Barclays are among those who stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars from loans tied to Tricolor.  That, in turn will make all car loans harder to get moving forward. https://www.kbb.com/car-news/a-big-auto-lender-went-bankrupt-heres-what-it-means/

Stock in both Pfizer and Moderna fell on news that the Trump administration plans to link child deaths to Covid shots. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/12/pfizer-moderna-shares-fall-on-trump-child-covid-shot-report.html

Paramount Skydance is preparing a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, whose stock closed up more than 28% yesterday on the news.  It was the stock’s best day ever.  Paramount Skydance closed up 15%.  The actual offer hasn’t yet been made, nor are details of it available. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/11/warner-bros-discovery-paramount-skydance-bid.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Four wide releases this weekend at the movies, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” is the third film in that franchise.  “The Long Walk” is a thriller about a deadly contest.  There’s also the 30th anniversary re-release of the original “Toy Story” animated adventure.  And 41 years after the original “This is Spinal Tap”, there’s finally a sequel called “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues Movie”.  It stars the original cast plus their 12th drummer and is once again directed by and co-stars Rob Reiner.  Cameos include Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Among the rush of last-minute legislation in Sacramento before scheduled end of session tomorrow is SB 586, which was unanimously approved by the state Senate yesterday.  The measure for the first time allows electric motorcycles to be registered as off-highway vehicles so they can legally and safely access OHV areas.  Sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones from San Diego, the bill was designed with the support of OHV enthusiasts who say the lack of registration protocols and rules for this new category of OHV has created worsening chaos as the popularity of eMotos has increased.  SB 586 now goes to Gov. Newsom for his signature before becoming law on January 1.  (Sen. Brian Jones media release)

State lawmakers have also passed a bill to ban masks that shield the identity of ICE agents making federal raids in California, and another that allows patients’ names to be left off of abortion pill bottles to protect health care providers who send pills to states with abortion bans and patients who fear being identified.  Gov. Newsom is expected to sign the pill bottle identity bill, but has not indicated whether he will sign the ICE mask bill. www.NYTimes.com

One bill that’s still being considered is SB 682, which would ban so-called “forever chemicals”, or PFAS in cookware, cleaning products, dental floss, ski wax, food packaging and some children’s products.  The term forever chemicals refers to their resistance to breaking down in the environment and eventual accumulation in people and animals.  The best-known PFAS is “Teflon”.  California and more than a dozen other states have already limited PFAS use.  They’re currently banned in carpets, textiles and firefighting foam.  High-profile chefs including Rachel Ray have come out against the bill, saying non-stick pans are safe when manufactured and used correctly and that banning them could make cooking more difficult and costlier for families, leading to poorer nutrition.  The Cookware Sustainability Alliance notes that Teflon is a fluoropolymer, and that such PTFEs, though technically part of the PFAS family have been shown for decades to be inert and non-harmful.  Environmentalists including actor Mark Rufallo, who starred in the 2019 film “Dark Waters” about forever chemical contamination support the bill.   SB 682 has been passed by the Senate, but is still under consideration by the Assembly.  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-bill-ban-forever-chemicals-cookware/
