It took two hours of rain delay to get the game started Sunday between the Red Sox and the visiting Royals.  But the top of the first inning brought something fairly rare and not that well-known – an immaculate inning pitched by Boston starting pitcher Payton Tolle.  He didn’t even know it was a thing until told about it later.  It’s striking out the side on the minimum possible nine pitches.  The only two that weren’t a swing and a miss Sunday were a called third strike to the leadoff batter and foul ball strike against the final batter.  It was the fifth immaculate inning in the majors this season, and only the eighth in Red Sox history.  Tolle ended up pitching six scoreless innings in the 4-1 win over Kansas City. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7591269/2026/09/13/immaculate-inning-payton-tolle/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down again today.  The Dow fell almost 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was off by 8 tenths.  Gold fell another $16 to $4,335.90 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained another $5.07 to $106.46 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to raise interest rates for the first time in three years to fight stubbornly high inflation.  According to “Futures Prices”, there is a 90% probability the Fed will increase interest rated a quarter percent tomorrow.  But nobody is really certain because new Fed chairman Kevin Warsh doesn’t provide signals of upcoming moves the way his predecessors did.  The closest he’s come was a comment at the recent Fed meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming that the Fed had not yet achieved its goal of putting inflation in check.  The President is still pushing for a rate cut.  Earlier this year, at least one cut this year had been expected.  But that was before the Iran war got out of hand with recent flare-ups, causing oil and gas prices to soar.   https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-kevin-warsh-interest-rates-ffd60cca8bb045bb9b1c389f5f1b73af

Abbott Laboratories will pay $385m to settle claims tied to an investigation of contaminated baby formula at its Sturgis, Michigan factory, which led to supply shortages in 2022.  The plant, which is the largest baby formula plant in the country, was closed for four months, leading the Biden administration to ease import rules for foreign manufacturers, airlifting formula from Europe and invoking federal emergency rules to avoid a shortage.  The Justice Department has closed its criminal investigation and Abbott says the settlement does not represent any finding of fault or liability. https://apnews.com/article/abbott-infant-formula-justice-michigan-recall-23b355c26f6347a7e07565aba76d0e4f

Automotive analyst John Murphy has released his latest outlook for the U.S. auto market.  He expects the demand for gas-electric hybrids to surge over the next four years and account for more than one third of new vehicles by 2030.  He also thinks it’s unlikely that U.S. lawmakers will allow a flood of cheap Chinese vehicles to enter the U.S. market because of the damage it would do to domestic manufacturers.  Vehicles built in China and imported into the U.S. currently face a 100% tariff, which has effectively kept them off the market here.  Chinese automakers BYD and Geely are expected to begin selling vehicles in Canada this fall.  Starting next year, the Commerce Department will ban automakers from importing and selling vehicles in the U.S. that contain technology developed or manufactured by Chinese companies.  Thanks to competition from Chinese vehicles sold worldwide, it’s expected that between five and ten auto brands currently sold in the U.S. will disappear over the next decade.  There are currently 38 auto brands sold in the U.S.  Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Fiat and Polestar are the most likely to go.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/15/us-auto-market-predictions-2030-john-murphy.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

President Trump’s approval rating improved from an all-time low of 33% to 35% following the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas last week.  Yet 63% of Americans polled disapprove of his promise to pay everybody $5k if the Republicans win in November.  If that same poll is correct, he might not have to make good on the promise anyway.  44% of respondents show a preference for the Democratic party compared with 37% for Republicans. That’s the widest gap since Trump returned to office.  His boast that “overall numbers for the convention beat the NFL” was a little off as well.  According to Nielsen ratings, 25m viewers watched this year’s NFL season opener.  2.5m watched the convention.   https://www.forth.news/stories/Cf4EC7e4vtmGsdyExjwJ6

While gasoline and diesel prices are rising, motor oil prices are soaring.  And Costco is putting a limit on the amount of motor oil customers can buy to prevent a run by those hoping to stock up before prices get even worse.  Kirkland-brand 5-quart two-packs are now going for about $58.  Just last year, they were about $30.  And there’s now a limit of two boxes per week.  It’s also selling six-pack quarts of Mobil 1 full synthetic for $44 with a limit of five.  Synthetic motor oils are heavily dependent on Group III base oils which are mostly made from refining crude oil that is 40% imported from the Middle East.  The international benchmark for crude oil, the Brent Crude index has risen from $72 in July to about $104 a barrel today. https://apnews.com/article/costco-motor-oil-diesel-iran-amazon-kirkland-f5fafbcc6f6befe718b61f7cdf3d3e38
