LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

San Diego Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics responded to call of a young girl on the Pala reservation experiencing a seizure just after 9p Friday.  The child had been trick or treating and her parents had mentioned the possibility of exposure to tainted candy.  She was airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital for further evaluation.  Staff there confirmed that the emergency was not related to narcotics or any foreign substance.  Instead, it appeared to have come from an undiagnosed medical condition.  She was home and doing well as of Saturday afternoon.  However, the rumor of the possibility of tainted candy on the reservation resulted in a warning by the Office Staff at Vivian Banks Charter School late Friday evening to the parents of all Vivian Banks students to collect and dispose of all Halloween candy.  The message was sent without any Administrative approval.  The district later issued a retraction. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4327971559092-child-safe-after-medical-emergency-on-pala-indian-reservation

Murrieta Police are investigating an attack Halloween night that left one person unconscious.  Police were called to a fight near Margarita Road and Grove Way between 10:30p and 11p.  One of the two main combatants was injured and had to be hospitalized.  Many others fled the scene.  Investigators are now locating some of those witnesses. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/murrieta-attack-halloween-night-seriously-injures-one-person-witnesses-scatter

A motorcyclist was injured after colliding with a Kia on East Mission Road near Santa Margarita Drive in Fallbrook last evening around 7:30p.  Both lanes of traffic were blocked for time.  No word on the extent of the rider’s injuries. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/30/news/motorcyclist-injured-in-collision-with-car-on-east-mission-road-in-fallbrook/80323.html

There were a pair of early Saturday morning crashes into trees or bushes in Fallbrook.  One was a pickup truck that then caught fire on Rice Canyon Road.  That happened at about 12:47a.  About two hours later, a white Mustang crashed into a tree on Via Monserate near Palomar Drive.  No injuries reported for either incident. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/30/news/white-mustang-crashes-into-tree-on-via-monserate-in-fallbrook/80318.html

A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision near West Beech Street and South Main Avenue in Fallbrook on Friday afternoon.  Witnesses described the car involved as a grey Mustang. The incident was reported just before 5p.  Reporting parties told dispatchers they heard the crash, then went outside and saw the vehicle leaving the area.  No injuries were reported for the victim, Dom Trent, well known to locals as the guy who good naturedly directs traffic in the Grocery Outlet shopping center parking lot where his brother owns a barber shop.  A CHP unit noted that a vehicle matching a similar description had been involved in a separate investigation earlier in the day.  Officers were unable to confirm whether the incidents were connected.  The driver remained at large as of Friday evening. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/30/news/car-vs-bicyclist-in-hit-and-run-driver-fled-scene/80316.html

Fire broke out east of Julian yesterday after 3p.  The Scissors Fire near the intersection of Highway 78 and San Felipe Road burned about 68 acres and is now 50% contained.  Over 100 personnel were assigned to the fire.  No structures were threatened and no evacuations ordered. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/vegetation-fire-burns-near-highway-78/3925247/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell four tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up three tenths.  And the Nasdaq gained two thirds of a percent.  Gold traded $23.40 higher on the Comex at $4,109.90 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 23 cents to $61.21 a barrel.

The Trump administration has committed to continue partial funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as food stamps using $4.65b in emergency funds.  But a top USDA official told a federal judge this morning that payment amounts to individuals will be reduced and that it may take “a few weeks to up to several months” to make it happen.  The administration also revealed that it is short by about half of the $8b cost to fund SNAP for the month of November.  Once those emergency funds are spent, officials say there is nowhere else to turn to continue funding SNAP if the government shutdown continues. https://abcnews.go.com/US/trump-administration-partially-fund-snap-months/story?id=127138175

Kimberly-Clark announced today that it will buy Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol for $48.7b.  The combined company would bring together brands including Huggies and Kleenex with Band-Aid and Tylenol.  Kenvue had spun out of Johnson & Johnson 2 ½ years ago.  Since then, its shares have fallen by more than a third from their initial public offering price. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/03/kimberly-clark-to-buy-kenvue.html

Ford, Kia and Hyundai all reported huge declines in EV sales last month.  Many buyers had rushed to purchase EVs before the expiration of tax credits.  Not all automakers report monthly sales.  Ford reported year-over-year October sales of EVs down 25%.  Kia and Hyundai reported their top EV models dropped between 52% and 71% from a year ago.  Toyota, which is not as heavily invested in all-electric vehicles as other manufacturers reported selling only 18 of its only all-electric, the BZ model in October.  That was down from 1,401 a year ago and 61 last month.  Experts at CarMax and Edmunds say that with tax credits off the table, the market appears to be settling into a more natural rhythm.  Ford’s CEO had said last month that he wouldn’t be surprised if EV sales fell by about half with the end of tax incentives to a market share of about 5%. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/03/ford-hyundai-ev-sales.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, there wasn’t much in the way of new movies.  In fact, the most popular new release was the 40th anniversary re-release of “Back to the Future”, which placed 6th with $4.7m in ticket sales on 2,300 screens.  The only other new release was the animated family comedy horror, “Stitchhead” which placed 9th with $2.1m in ticket sales.  After opening in second place last weekend, the romantic drama “Regretting You” moved into first place selling $8.1m in tickets followed by “Black Phone 2”, last week’s #1 “Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc” and “KPop Demon Hunters”.  Probably because everyone was out partying and trick or treating on Friday, this was the third lowest weekend for movie attendance this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/?ref_=bo_nb_we_secondarytab

Even though it’s organized by the non-profit New York Roadrunners, yesterday’s New York City Marathon and those in all big cities deal in some pretty big dollars.  The New York group spends $111m a year putting together local races.  Costs include staff salaries, vendor services like porta-potties, emergency medical teams, security, and road closures.  Last year, the Metropolitan Transit Authority asked organizers of the New York Marathon to pay $750k to offset lost toll revenue from the closure of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.  The Roadrunners disputed the charge, arguing that the marathon boosts MTA revenue thanks to increased ridership system wide on race day.  Their revenue comes from the $255 to $315 runner entry fee and from race sponsorships.  NYC’s headline sponsor is Tata Consultancy, who plans to spend $40m annually for this and the next four years on the New York Marathon.  Organizers say New York’s race attracted 2m spectators last year and generated $692m for the local economy.  About $287m of it from out-of-town visitors.  Many of the runners compete for charitable causes from cancer research to, this year … local public media funding to cover government cutbacks.  Runners in Boston, New York and Chicago collectively raised over $156m last year. www.morningbrew.com
