CBS News has named Bari Weiss as editor in chief under new corporate owner, Skydance Media, which is also acquiring Weiss’ views-and-news site The Free Press.  That site was founded after her acrimonious departure from The New York Times in which she accused colleagues of intolerance.  Weiss is against partisanship, telling subscribers that the majority of Americans are neither part of “an America-loathing far left” or “a history-erasing far right”.  Weiss has no broadcast experience with some at CBS saying they will reserve judgement on her choice until they see whether she offers insight and guidance or issues ideological decrees. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/06/nx-s1-5561116/bari-weiss-cbs-skydance-free-press

President Trump is considering a $10b bailout for American farmers hurt by his trade war.  As a result of tariffs, China has cancelled all soy bean shipments from the U.S. and is instead getting them from Argentina.  Soybeans are more important as a U.S. export than corn or cotton because they’re used in everything from animal feed to fuel.  More than $30b worth were exported last year.  China bought over a third of that.  Farmers would prefer the White House make a trade deal with China that ends the unofficial embargo on soybeans.  Instead Washington is talking bailout with details to be released tomorrow.  Complications include the U.S. currently also providing billions of dollars in aid to Argentina and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent owning $25m worth of farmland in North Dakota.  https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/trump-trade-argentina-china-soybeans-rcna235257

Verizon today announced former PayPal CEO Dan Schulman as the communications company’s new CEO.  He replaces Hans Vestberg, who led Verizon since 2018.  Shares in Verizon dropped 5% on the news.  Vestberg will remain on the board of directors until next year’s annual meeting.  The company also announced that Mark Bertolino would become chairman of the board. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/06/verizon-ceo-dan-schulman-replaces-hans-vestberg.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” debuted on 3,700 screens, selling $33m worth of tickets – triple the gate of last week’s top film, “One Battle After Another” which took in another $11.1m in its second week in theaters.  “The Smashing Machine” debuted in third place with $6m.  The re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” opened in 7th place on 2,100 screens.  “Good Boy” opened in 9th on fewer screens with about the same per-screen average as Avatar.  Total attendance for this week’s Top Ten was about 6% better than last weekend, but still well below average for the year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W40/

Gasoline prices have been in the same 25 cent range since March and are currently at just about the low point of that range.  Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $4.76.  In Riverside County, it’s $4.60.  The nationwide average today is $3.08.  The Chevron refinery fire in El Segundo on Thursday has yet to affect prices locally.  Its impact will depend on what was damaged, how extensive the damage was and how long it will take to fix.  There is potential for retail fuel prices to spike between 15 and 30 cents in California because of it.  Today’s lowest local price is $3.99 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center.  In southwest Riverside County, it’s $4.29 at Murrieta Sam’s Club. https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/el-segundo-chevron-oil-refinery-fire-gas-prices/3786791/ https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.2523628160655&lng=-117.263642523413&z=11

National parks are proving to be one of the more confusing aspects of the current federal government shutdown.  Though many National Parks are still open to the public, some services are limited or unavailable.  Some parks that collect fees are continuing basic services including maintaining restrooms, collecting trash and maintaining roads.  None of that is happening at closed parks.  Several websites including those for making reservations are down.  Some states including West Virginia, Utah and Hawaii are stepping in with funds and donations to keep National Parks in their states operating.  There are concerns about safety and responsibility in keeping parks open without adequate staffing for critical services.  During the last federal shutdown during the previous Trump administration, Texas Public Radio reported an ancient rock at Big Bend National Park being vandalized while at California’s Joshua Tree National Park, trees were cut down and new roads illegally constructed amid lack of staffing.  Lack of sanitation was noted at parks all over the country.  Conservation groups are calling for the immediate full closure of all National Parks to prevent ecological harm. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/04/nx-s1-5562507/national-parks-government-shutdown
