Just hours after Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy warned of flight disruptions due to the federal shutdown, they began happening. Nationwide, almost 6k flights were delayed in the U.S. yesterday, including 42% of those leaving Chicago’s O’Hare International and 23% from Hollywood Burbank. There were no air traffic controllers on duty at Hollywood Burbank Airport last evening, resulting in flight delays averaging 2 ½ hours, according to the FAA. A San Diego-based company known as TRACON takes over in such situations for flight communications and departure clearance. But the FAA reduces the number of takeoffs and landings for safety when nobody is controlling traffic on-site. The air traffic controllers union has instructed members to keep working during the government shutdown. They are classified as essential workers, so they’re expected to work without pay, but collect that back pay when the shutdown ends. The nation is short-staffed on air traffic controllers and there has been in increase in the number of them calling in sick since the shutdown began, according to the TSA. There were widespread flight delays towards the end of the last government shutdown in 2018 and early 2019. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/flight-delays-air-traffic-controllers-government-shutdown-sean-duffy-burbank/
ChatGPT-maker Opoen AI has announced a huge purchase of chips from AMD – enough for six-gigawatts of computing capacity for ChatGPT. That equals enough energy to power 5m U.S. households for a year or operate several time-travelling DeLoreans. The deal is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD over the next five years. But it’s unclear how OpenAI will pay for it. OpenAI is getting the rights buy about 10% of AMD for a penny a share if OpenAI hits certain milestones and AMD’s stock price rises. But OpenAI only made $4.3b the first half of this year and lost $2.5b during the same period. Just a few weeks ago, OpenAI also pledged to buy 4.5 gigawatts of cloud computing power from Oracle. They’ve also signed a mulit-billion dollar agreement with Nvidia for that chipmaker to invest $100b in OpenAI over the next decade, which OpenAI will turn right around and spend on Nvidia chips. Industry analysts smell an AI bubble brewing. www.morningbrew.com

The meals are manufactured by San Clemente-based FreshRealm, a company linked to an expanding listeria outbreak tied to heat-and-eat pasta meals. There have already been recalls of Hello Fresh products sold at Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons. A list of products included in yesterday’s warning is at this link. The USDA says there have been no reports of any adverse reactions from consuming these products. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hello-fresh-listeria-spinach-usda/
Illegal crossings along the U.S./Mexico border are at their lowest level since 1970 amid the Trump administration’s sweeping clampdown. U.S. Border Patrol agents recorded nearly 238k apprehensions during the fiscal year that ended last week. 60% of them were during the last three months under President Biden. Three years ago, during the humanitarian crisis, apprehensions were as much as ten times the numbers from the past 12 months. A record was set in 2022, when Border Patrol made 2.2m apprehensions. A spokesman for the Migration Policy Institute – a non-partisan Washington think tank noted that illegal crossings began to fall sharply just over a year ago when the Biden administration enacted strict limits on asylum. Asylum has since been cut off and the border sealed and militarized under Trump’s second administration. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/illegal-crossings-immigration-us-mexico-southern-border-lowest-level-1970-trump-dhs/
According to the Surfrider Foundation, 70% of California’s sandy beaches will be gone by 2100 due to climate-driven sea level rise. Beach erosion is a natural process, but climate change is accelerating and compounding its impacts. At the same time, coastal development is squeezing beaches from the other side. Beaches would normally migrate further inland, but can’t due to buildings, roads and sea walls. Surfrider’s latest report cites nine case studies including San Clemente and San Onofre. The Foundations was created in 1984 by a group of Malibu Surfers dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans and beaches. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/surfrider-foundation-70-of-californias-sandy-beaches-to-vanish-by-2100
