Authorities have made an arrest in connection with the deadly Palisades Fire in January. He’s a 29-year old Uber driver. Jonathan Rinderknecht from Melbourne, Florida was arrested yesterday at his home on suspicion of destruction of property by means of fire. That charge relates to a smaller fire one week earlier that smoldered underground, eventually reigniting into what would become the Palisades fire. The Palisades fire burned over 36 square miles, destroyed 6,800 structures and killed 12 people. If convicted as charged, he faces a federal prison term of not less than five and up to 20 years. He may face additional charges. https://patch.com/california/pacificpalisades/uber-driver-purposely-started-fire-destroyed-thousands-palisades-malibu

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained a quarter percent. The S&P 500 was up more than a half percent. And the Nasdaq increased by 9 tenths of a percent. Gold skyrocketed another $66.60 an ounce to a record $4,071.10 as investors seek a safe haven during federal funding uncertainty. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained a dollar to $62.73 a barrel.
The White House has suggested it may try to deny back pay to some furloughed federal workers. It was Trump himself who in his first term, signed a law making those payments automatic. www.NYTimes.com
In spite of dire warnings about federal job loss and denied back pay in the middle of an already precarious jobs condition, stocks have continued to set new records over the past week. The streak only ended yesterday because of a weak financial report from Oracle. It seems Washington disfunction is not the only thing investors care about. Though the financial world loses some important metrics during the federal shutdown, like reports from the Labor Department, it’s clear that artificial intelligence companies are making deals and the economy is still growing. Though little has been done to end the shutdown, economist predictions are that it’ll last about 20 days, making its effect negligible and easily contained – even if some federal workers are permanently laid off. Investors are relying on history – and historically, stocks generally keep going up. They recovered from The Great Depression of the 1930s at least a half dozen years before employment did. www.NYTimes.com
The price of gold is up more than 50% this year. It’s a traditional go-to when alternative investments seem too risky. Though Wall Street seems to no longer care as much about the erratic economic policies of the Trump administration, including upending global trade and threatening the independence of the Federal Reserve, the soaring price of gold says otherwise. Gold rises when the dollar is weak, and the dollar has fallen about 10% this year. Gold hasn’t done this well since the 1979 energy crisis. The problem with investing in gold is that it just sits there. It doesn’t pay dividends. So, unless its price keeps going up, it’s only a good investment if everything else is going down. Except for the dollar, that’s not the case right now. So, this time, it may be going up mainly as a hedge that stocks won’t continue their ascent. In other words, some investors are smelling a potential bubble burst. ahttps://www.npr.org/2025/10/08/nx-s1-5566666/gold-hits-record-best-year-1979
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
You’ve seen photo frames and ornaments titled “Baby’s First Christmas” or Baby’s first this or that. But have you heard of Baby’s First Scholarship? Hospitals, county offices and groups like the United Way have been notifying every recorded newborn’s parents about the program. But some either thought it was a scam or have forgotten … newborn parenthood tends to make one lose focus. Every baby born in California in the past three years has up to a $175 scholarship waiting for them. More than $8m has been set aside for children born in San Diego County alone. It’s administered under CalKIDS, the nation’s largest children’s development account program. The state makes available $100 for every baby born here since July 1, 2023, or $25 for those born in the 12 months before that date, plus $25 when parents claim the account online and $50 more for linking the account to a ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan. Claiming the account can be done for free at www.CalKIDS.org . You’ll need the 13-digit registration number on the child’s birth certificate. It’s a jump start for a child’s college education fund which can later be accessed for tuition, books, supplies, and computer equipment at accredited institutions of higher learning nationwide. Attention shopaholics – Amazon Prime Deal Day ends tonight at midnight. The traditional warm-up for Black Friday holiday sales includes deals on a portion, but not even close to the majority of items carried by the online retail giant. Yet, there are plenty of deals with special Prime Day prices about 30% to as much as 40% or more off the normal price. The sale began yesterday and some of the best deals have already sold out. Many of the deals are on everyday supplies including AA batteries and name brand cleaning products. And of course, the special prices are only for those with an Amazon Prime membership, which is $15 a month, or $139 a year and includes perks like free shipping on most items. https://www.nbcnews.com/select/shopping/best-amazon-prime-day-deals-october-2025-rcna236304
