LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
There was a crash involving a school van and a sedan at S. Stagecoach and Brooke Roads in Fallbrook yesterday morning, just before 8a. Initial reports said children on the van were injured. That proved false. The driver was the only person in the van. The sedan had two children on board. It ended up on the grass in front of Christ the King church. No one was injured. The van driver later went to the hospital for a precautionary checkup. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/09/news/collision-involving-school-van-in-fallbrook-involves-no-injuries/80134.html

A developer is moving forward with plans for 571 homes in a mixed use setting on the site of the old Valley Drive-In and Swap Meet in Oceanside. An application has been filed with the city. When first proposed last year, Ocean Kamp was going to have up to 700 homes, a 300-room hotel, retail shops and a wave lagoon. The latest application shows compatibility with neighboring properties, access points at Foussat Road, Street B, Alex Road and Ocean Pointe Road with the addition of roundabouts at Foussat and Alex Roads, and at Loop Road and Private Street A. Two of the access points already have traffic signals. The developer says the project will not interfere with operations of the adjacent Oceanside Airport and will be pedestrian-friendly within its boundaries. There have been no formal applications yet for the commercial portion. The developer’s goal is to have Ocean Kamp under construction by April or May. https://thecoastnews.com/ocean-kamp-project-advances-with-571-new-homes-proposed/
Meanwhile, the Oceanside City Council has approved an 83-home subdivision near Guajome Lake. Opponents plan to appeal that decision. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/location/california/san-diego-county/north-county/
Tuesday’s storm left between about four tenths to ¾ of an inch of rain in most North County and Southwest Riverside County communities. Rainbow reported the most among the foothill areas with 1.1 inches. Palomar Observatory had 1.87 inches. But that’s it for the near future. Beautiful weather in Pala for at least the next week. Just how beautiful is coming up. (below)

A federal judge in San Francisco yesterday ordered the Trump administration to halt mass layoffs of federal workers during the government shutdown while she considers claims by unions that the cuts are illegal. Two unions petitioned to block the layoffs at more than 30 federal agencies while the case proceeds. https://www.reuters.com/world/us-judge-says-she-will-likely-block-trumps-mass-layoffs-during-government-2025-10-15/
The administration is also taking advantage of the shutdown to withhold billions of dollars approved for transportation projects in New York and Illinois. The official White House position is that its checking contracts for any diversity provisions. But Trump has muddled that story with open comments about targeting Democrats and feuding with party leaders in those state. The same is true for energy projects being terminated in 16 states – 14 of which are led by Democrats. The Energy Department says the projects in line for $7.6b in grants were “not economically viable” or did not advance Trump’s agenda. On the flip side, Trump says he’s “identified funds” to allow the government to continue paying more than a million active-duty military troops during the shutdown. Troops normally don’t get paid when the government is closed. www.NYTimes.com
Nestle, the Swiss-based maker of KitKat and Nespresso announced today it will cut 16k jobs. That’s a little less than 6% of its total workforce. Some of the workers are being replaced by automation. But the majority of the cuts are white collar jobs. Their new CEO Philipp Navratil made the comment as the world’s largest packaged food company seeks to cut costs and win back consumer confidence. Today’s announcement caused stock in Nestle to jump 8% in early trading. https://www.reuters.com/business/nestle-reports-better-than-expected-sales-growth-with-new-ceo-helm-2025-10-16/
The J.M. Smucker Company is suing Trader Joes, saying the chain’s new frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are too similar to Smucker’s Uncrustables in both design and packaging. They’re claiming trademark violations related to the pie-like crimp markings at sandwich edges as well as colors and graphics on the packaging that are too similar to Uncrustables. Smucker is seeking restitution and wants a judge to order all product and packaging be turned over to Smucker to be destroyed. Legal experts say the biggest issue here will be whether or not the copycat product deceives consumers. Smucker claims that is indeed what’s happening, referring to a social media post claiming that Trader Joe’s contracted with Smucker to make the sandwiches under its own private label. Such cases usually end up with a settlement since neither side wants an expensive trial. https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/15/business/smucker-sues-trader-joes-pbj-sandwiches-hnk

President Trump on Tuesday honored slain political activist Charlie Kirk on what would have been his 32nd birthday. Meanwhile, the administration has revoked the visas of six foreigners that U.S. officials deem to have made derisive comments or made light of Kirk’s assassination. The six were from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Paraguay and South Africa. According to the State Department, “Aliens who take advantage of America’s hospitality while celebrating the assassination of our citizens will be removed.” www.apnews.com

If you’re worried about the cost of healthcare insurance – and you should be since it’s projected to surge 6% to 7% next year, know that there are employers who pick up the entire cost of employee healthcare benefits. The rest usually range from matching to paying the majority for their employees. According to benefits consultant Mercer, about 12% of large employers offer at least one medical plan with free upfront coverage for an individual worker. But only 2% cover dependents for free. Reasons include enticement for recruiting new employees, reducing turnover, and the belief that healthy employees make for a more productive workforce. It’s expensive for employers. And there can be some hidden costs for employees, like high deductibles and co-pays or other forms of cost-sharing, though that can still be a good deal for employees who don’t need much in the way of services. But even some small companies, once they get over the shock of just how expensive the programs are, think zero-premium health plans are worth it. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/16/nx-s1-5561051/health-care-costs-premiums-companies-cost-of-living
