LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Palomar Health is partnering with UCSD to “stabilize and expand health care services” in North County.  Palomar’s CEO, Diane Hansen will be in charge of the new joint powers authority.  There will be six board members – three from Palomar and three from UCSD.  Palomar Health, which operates medical centers in Escondido and Poway has had financial difficulties for the past several years.  UCSD has been under financial pressure as well, announcing the layoff of 200 employees in June.  Plans for the new combined entity include a comprehensive cancer center on the Escondido campus.  Less than 50% of Palomar’s assets will be assigned to the new entity, to be known as Palomar/USCD Health Authority.  Palomar will get a $50m revolving line of credit with the with the deed for the Poway campus used as collateral.  UCSD says assuming any of Palomar’s debt is not part of the deal.  https://voiceofsandiego.org/2025/10/22/north-county-report-palomar-healths-new-partnership-with-ucsd-health/

On Tuesday, notifications began going out to CalFresh recipients that they might not receive their November payment due to the government shutdown, if the shutdown continues beyond today – which it almost certainly will.  CalFresh is the federal food assistance program known as SNAP and is commonly referred to as EBT or Food Stamps.  It is 100% federally funded, managed by the state and administered by local counties.  Local food resources and information is available by calling 2-1-1 or through the 211 San Diego webpage which includes interactive maps for resources including food banks and pantries.  About 395k individuals in San Diego County receive CalFresh benefits. https://www.countynewscenter.com/federal-government-shut-down-could-delay-calfresh-benefits/

In response to the destructive wildfires in Los Angeles this January, San Diego County is strengthening the region’s aerial resources with the purchase of a firefighting helicopter.  The Sikorsky S70 Firehawk adds to the region’s existing fleet of 12 firefighting helicopters and planes.  It’ll be able to fly at night, which can be a vital first line of attack.  It carries up to 1,000 gallons of water and will have a hoist for rescues.  The Firehawk flies faster and longer and drops more water the county’s other smaller helicopters.  It is the same model used by CAL FIRE since 2018, and City of San Diego as well as in Los Angeles and Orange counties. https://www.countynewscenter.com/county-acquiring-firehawk-helicopter/

Researchers at the personal finance website, WalletHub included three San Diego cities among the top one third of 2025’s Safest Cities in America.  Chula Vista came in 23rd, San Diego ranked 39th, and Oceanside ranked 49th according to the new report.  Last year, Chula Vista also ranked 23rd, while Oceanside ranked 37th and San Diego ranked 43rd.  The rankings included the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/3-cities-san-diego-county-rank-among-safest-america-report

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 was up a half percent.  And the Nasdaq rose 8 tenths.  After two days of retreat, gold shot back up today, with futures trading $86.50 higher on the Comex $4,151.90 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $3.28, or 5 ½% to $61.78 a barrel.

The US Department of Agriculture will reopen about 2,100 field offices around the country today, in spite of the ongoing government shutdown to help farmers and ranchers access $3b in aid from existing programs.  Each county office will have two paid workers, while most workers in other government jobs remain on furlough.  A spokesperson for the USDA says the move reflects President Trump’s commitment to helping farmers and ranchers who are traditionally some of his strongest supporters.  Some have expressed displeasure with recent actions by Trump, including importing more beef from Argentina and this month’s $20b aid package allowing Argentina to sell soybeans to China – sales that might hav otherwise gone to American farmers.  www.apnews.com

The national debt has reached $38 trillion with the last trillion accumulating faster than at any time outside of the pandemic.  We surpassed $37 trillion just two months ago.  Nine months before that, the debt was $36 trillion.  Economists say that over time, a growing debt leads to inflation with borrowing costs rising and wages declining as businesses have less money to invest.  https://apnews.com/article/trump-treasury-debt-ceiling-bessent-09575f13ca95c2f1beb38234b2cbe85b

A sell-off of Treasury notes today, one day ahead of the latest Consumer Price Index numbers may put any further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve this year at risk.  Today’s sell-off sends rates higher after three consecutive declines.  The Fed will decide on rates next week. https://www.wsj.com/articles/jgbs-edge-higher-tracking-gains-in-u-s-treasurys-a14f06fc

Mortgage rates have fallen to their lowest level this year.  The average for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage dropped to 6.19% this week, down 8 basis points from a week ago.  It had been over 7% earlier this year.  This could improve the housing affordability picture for first-time buyers.  Redfin reports that the typical home sold for 1.4% below the asking price in September.  That’s the biggest September discount in six years – before the pandemic surge in demand caused prices to spike. https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/23/economy/us-mortgage-rates

After a ten-year absence, United Airlines will resume service out of Carlsbad’s McClellan-Palomar Airport beginning March 30.  United Express, operated by SkyWest Airlines will have twice-daily flights from Carlsbad to United hubs in Denver and San Francisco.  They’ll be flying Embraer E175’s.  Tickets can be purchased now.  United is the second major U.S. airline this year to announce service from Carlsbad.  American Airlines began daily flights to Phoenix earlier this year.  United last serviced McClellan-Palomar in 2015 until it discontinued flying that model of commuter jet.  Since then, the airport has a new terminal and modernized facilities.  There is a lawsuit pending against the county for allowing commercial flights by American without consulting Carlsbad city officials.  The advocacy group filing the suit says the city’s involvement is required by a 2021 court order. https://thecoastnews.com/united-airlines-returns-to-carlsbad-airport-in-2026/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

EV-maker, Rivian is planning to lay off 4% of its workforce.  That’s about 600 workers.  Rivian and other EV makers are facing marketing challenges amid changing regulations and the elimination of the $7,500 federal incentive for buying an EV.  Though sales were up in the third quarter, Rivian’s projected total sales for the year was revised from as many as 46k units to no more than 43,500.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/23/rivian-layoffs.html

Tesla just announced the recall of 63k Cybertrucks because the front parking lights are too bright.  It’s caused by a software defect.  So, affected vehicles will be fixed with an over-the-air software update. https://www.pasadenastarnews.com/2025/10/23/cybertruck-recall-headlights/

In spite of record sales, profits are down at Tesla.  A lot of people raced to beat the expiration of federal tax credits last quarter, pushing revenue up 12% compared with one year ago.  But costs soared too, leaving profit down more than one third compared to a year ago.  In speaking to investors, CEO Elon Musk pointed to a future where he expects to build AI, humanoid robots, and full self-driving cars.  And he still wants that new $1 trillion pay package with more control of the company.  He said, “I don’t feel comfortable building that robot army if I don’t have, at least, influence over it.”  Oh, Elon … do you really think robots are going to care how much money you have once they launch their revolution and take over the world?  (Ask Dr. Lanning) www.morningbrew.com
