LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Vista Wednesday evening. It happened around 7p in the 500 block of North Melrose Drive. An SUV entering the northbound lanes hit the motorcycle, ejecting the rider who was pronounced dead at the scene. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4321874802033-motorcyclist-ejected-killed-in-north-county-crash
The intersection of East Mission Road and Live Oak Park Road in Fallbrook has been placed on the county’s Traffic Signal Priority List. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 October 22. Priority points based on operational and safety improvements rather than the length of time the intersection has been on the list will determine the next intersection to be signalized. The priority list is updated when funding is budgeted for traffic signals. There were five reported accidents at that intersection over the past five years – all of them resulting in injuries. Because Live Oak Park Road meets Mission at an angle, realignment including the acquisition of private property may be needed before installing a signal. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/30/news/e-missionlive-oak-park-placed-on-traffic-signal-priority-list/80311.html
Oceanside Police report successfully locating five missing persons including two juveniles in less than eight weeks using artificial intelligence. The platform they used is called IREX AI. The significance is that it was integrated using 23 existing city cameras – no additional equipment required. By scanning camera recordings, the IREX system quickly matches images with missing persons, generating leads for investigators. https://northcountydailystar.com/oceanside-police-department-using-ai-finds-5-missing-people/

A reminder to drive with extra caution today. There will be a lot more pedestrians than usual, many of them children, and many of those wearing Halloween costumes that may limit their vision of vehicles.
We’ll have nice weather in Pala for Halloween. We’ll begin a slow cool off from the upper 80s tomorrow to the mid-70s by the end of next week. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – Game Six of the World Series is tonight at 5p in Toronto with the Blue Jays leading three games to two. They’ll send Kevin Gausman to the mound. LA will have Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is coming off two straight complete game wins. Game Seven, if needed will be tomorrow at 5p on Fox. There’s talk of the Dodgers playing Shohei Ohtani as either starting pitcher or as an outfielder tomorrow with possible assignment as a relief pitcher. It’s a little complicated. But Ohtani can stay in the game as designated hitter if he is also the starting pitcher. If he comes in as a reliever after starting as DH, he’ll have to play a position to remain in the game after his mound appearance is over. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46786524/dodgers-mull-ohtani-roles-potential-world-series-game-7

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 2 tenth of a percent. The S&P 500 was up a little over a tenth. And the Nasdaq gained a half percent. Gold fell back below $4k on the Comex, trading down $17.10 to $3,998.80 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 36 cents to $60.93 a barrel.
So, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates Wednesday and the market went down. Crazy, right? No. It went down because the decision to cut a quarter percent this week was not unanimous among the dozen Fed governors, and because chairman Jerome Powell, in announcing Wednesday’s cut cast considerable doubt over whether there would be another cut at the Fed’s next meeting in December. Powell only has four more semi-monthly meetings before his term as Fed Chairman is over. Meanwhile, President Trump could announce his choice to replace Powell before the end of this year. It’s a cinch it’ll be someone who wants to cut interest rates at least as much and as often as recent board addition, Stephen Miran, who broke ranks with the other governors and pushed for a half percent cut this month. Two of the governors wanted no cut. www.morningbrew.com
The average rate of a 30-year fixed rate mortgage increased twenty basis points over the past two days to 6.33% yesterday – the exact opposite of what rates were supposed to do following a rate cut by the Fed. The reason was simple. The bond market had already priced in Wednesday’s cut by the Fed and didn’t like the pessimistic commentary from Powell. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/30/mortgage-rates-fed-cut.html
A federal judge in Rhode Island blocked the Trump administration from discontinuing SNAP benefits during the government shutdown. Yesterday’s ruling came the day before the administration was set to cut off food stamp benefits to 42m Americans. In his ruling, Judge Jack O’Connell ordered the use of $6b in contingency funds set aside by Congress to continue the SNAP program. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/31/snap-trump-judge-food-stamps-shutdown.html
President Trump says he and Chinese leader Xi Jinping “agreed to almost everything” in yesterday’s two-hour meeting in South Korea. In exchange for concessions on rare earth export restrictions, the US will cut tariffs on Chinese goods from 20% to 10%, bringing the total tax on imports down to 47%. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/30/nx-s1-5590754/trump-china-xi-meeting-lowers-tariffs
Microsoft suffered an outage for its Azure cloud computing service Wednesday that disrupted companies including Alaska Airlines and Vodafone and workplace productivity software like Microsoft 365. It was probably caused by what Microsoft called an “inadvertent configuration change.” Azure is the second largest cloud computing service behind Amazon Web Services, which also had a major outage a week ago. www.morningbrew.com

Dictionary dot com’s Word of the Year isn’t really even a word and it doesn’t have an actual meaning. It’s more of a social media inside joke. It’s become viral among teenagers, and leaves parents and educators just scratching their heads. It’s 6-7, and even its spelling is up for debate. Is it the numerals 6 and 7? Or is it written out with the words “six seven”? One thing it’s not is the number, 67, and it has nothing to do with the old English phrase “sixes and sevens” which means a state of confusion, disarray or disorganization. It seems to trace back to rapper Skrilla’s song from last year called “Doot Doot (6-7)”. The song started appearing on TikTok videos with basketball players, including the NBA’s LaMelo Ball, who stands 6-foot-7. Then there was a viral video this year with a boy, now known as “The 6-7 Kid” shouting the phrase at a basketball game while another kid next to him juggles his hands. And that’s all it took. Nobody really knows what it means. Dictionary.com suggests it could mean “so-so” or “maybe this, maybe that” because of the juggling hand gesture. But they also say it’s not important whether or not it’s a definable word, but rather that it is having an impact on culture. Meanwhile, kids just use it whenever and laugh. https://apnews.com/article/6-7-word-of-year-dictionarycom-f905630f251cc8969100853d7e64ca79
First comes Trick or Treating. Then comes tallying up the loot. This year, there’s likely going to be a lot less chocolate in that Halloween bag. Or in Charlie Brown’s case, more rocks. As the result of tariffs, inflation and a global cocoa shortage sending the price of chocolate up 30% this year and 78% over the past five years, shoppers have shifted towards cheaper, trendier candies like gummies and sour treats. According to research firm, Circana, chocolate’s Halloween market share has now dropped from 52% to 44%. If you get full-size chocolate bars in your Trick or Treat bag tonight, you really scored! https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/31/chocolate-prices-halloween-tariffs-inflation-candy.html
On this day in music history – October 31,
- 1952, St. Louis bandleader Johnnie Johnson hired 26-year old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for three more years.
- In 1959, The Quarry Men changed their name to Johnny and the Moondogs to audition for a show in Liverpool. The group featured future Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
- Exactly four years later in 1963, The Beatles returned to London from their first overseas concert tour in Sweden to hundreds of screaming fans and a mob of photographers and reporters at Heathrow Airport. TV host Ed Sullivan was catching a flight there and witnessed the event, which convinced him to get the group on his show. It would be almost two more months before the first Beatles hits broke on American radio, and four months until their first appearance on the Sullivan show.
- In 1964, The Supremes began a four week stay at #1 with the single, “Baby Love” – the second of five consecutive #1 hits for the group
- On the same day, Ray Charles was arrested at the airport in Boston and charged with possession of heroin. It was his third drug charge, following incidents in 1958 and 1961. He avoided a prison sentence by entering rehab in LA, then spending a year on parole in 1966.
- In 1969, David Bowie performed “Space Oddity” for a Halloween event in Gravesend, England. After the song, he proceeded to read poems from a book and was booed off stage.
- In 1970, Led Zeppelin began the first of four weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Led Zeppelin III”.
- In 1974, Led Zeppelin held a launch party for their new record label, Swan Song. The party was extreme – which is saying a lot for a band known for excesses.
- In 1986, Roger Waters went to Britain’s high court to try and stop David Gilmour and Nick Mason from using the name Pink Floyd for future touring and recording. The following year, he was granted ownership of certain conceptual rights, including “The Wall” and the flying pig, but not the name Pink Floyd.
- In 1990, in a round of pranks between concert tour-mates, Billy Idol dumped 600 dead fish in Faith No More’s dressing room. They retaliated by walking on stage during Idol’s set … naked.
- In 1993, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea was there when actor, River Phoenix had his fatal collapse in LA.
- In 1996, Slash announced he was quitting Guns N’ Roses. He and Axl Rose had only barely been civil to each other for two years.
- In 2004, R. Kelly was kicked off a tour with Jay-Z one day after claiming he was attacked with pepper spray by a member of the rapper’s entourage. Jay-Z’s publicist denied it. The two were in the middle of a 40-city joint tour.
- In 2005, the white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album sold at auction for $188k. Some of the proceeds went to Amnesty International.
- In 2013, Marvin Gaye’s family sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement over their song, “Blurred Lines” for use of elements from Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”.
Born on this day …
- In 1937, folk singer Tom Paxton, whose songs have been recorded by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, The Seekers, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and others.

- Also in 1967, Ad Rock, guitarist with the Beasty Boys
- In 1968, rapper Vanilla Ice.
- In 1970, Rogers Stevens, guitarist with Blind Melon
- Also in 1970, Malin Berggren from Swedish pop group Ace of Bass, who had early 90s hits with “All That She Wants” and “The Sign”.
