LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A bicyclist was struck by an SUV during a nighttime ride near Oceanside Harbor Monday.  It happened around 10:42p in the 300 block of South Harbor Drive.  The 52-year old victim was airlifted to Scripps Memorial in La Jolla where he died of head trauma and other injuries.  The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.  Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/bicyclist-fatally-struck-suv-near-oceanside-harbor

A DUI and license checkpoint will be held from 6p tomorrow through 2a Saturday at an undisclosed location in the city of Carlsbad.  https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/dui-checkpoint-scheduled-friday-north-county-0

Carlsbad Police are investigating the discovery of a hidden camera found in a bathroom at The Shoppes at Carlsbad, along the 78 freeway at El Camino Real.  A mall customer found it over the weekend concealed below a diaper kit dispenser aimed at the toilet in a unisex bathroom.  https://thecoastnews.com/carlsbad-police-investigate-hidden-camera-found-in-mall-bathroom/

San Diego County Supervisors have approved a lease for United Airlines that will allow the carrier to operate out of McClellan-Palomar Airport beginning in March.  The 4-1 vote allows United to proceed with plans to fly a 70-seat Embraer 175 twice a day out of Carlsbad to Denver and San Francisco.  American Airlines already got county approval to fly out of Carlsbad back in January.  But a citizens group filed suit against the county “for violating state environmental laws.”  It’s possible there will be a suit against the United decision by the same group. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-diego-county-supervisors-ok-lease-for-united-airlines-flights-out-of-carlsbad

Western-wear and boot store Tecovas is set to open a new location in Old Town Temecula in the summer of next year.  It will replace the Old Town Antique Faire which closed earlier this year.  The ten-year old Tecovas chain has 50 stores nationwide.  Other new businesses coming soon to Old Town Front Street are Gaucho Grill, an Argentinian steak house going into the former Bank Building, and Tabu Shushi in place of the former Devilicious restaurant. https://patch.com/california/temecula/new-cowboy-business-slated-old-town-temecula-what-know-when-it-will-open

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1 ¼%.  The S&P 500 was flat.  And the Nasdaq fell 6 tenths of a percent.  Gold shot up over $89 an ounce, trading on the Comex at $4,313.70 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil plunged $1.16 to $57.32 a barrel.

On a 9-3 vote, the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by another quarter percent – the third rate cut this year.  That brings prime lending rates into the 3 ½ to 3 ¾% range.  The Fed also indicated there may be only one rate cut all of next year.  Experts are saying the cut won’t have much effect of the budgets of average Americans.   https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/10/business/consumer-interest-rates-savings-debts-fed

Market analysts are saying today’s rally on the Dow is the result of yesterday’s interest rate cut, but the decline in the tech-heavy Nasdaq is due to worries over slumping numbers released yesterday by Oracle, whose stock fell 14% this morning after revealing soaring quarterly AI costs.  Oracle reported capital expenditures of $12b for the fiscal second quarter – up from $4b the previous year and $4b higher than analysts expectations.  Though Oracle’s revenue for the quarter was up, it didn’t meet expectations. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/oracle-stock-sinks-as-ai-costs-jump-past-wall-street-estimates-200454370.html

Resale home prices nationwide have gone negative for the first time in about 2 ½ years.  That was when the Federal Reserve first brought interest rates up from zero, causing mortgage rates to spike by more than 3 percentage points to about 7%.  According to Parcl Labs, the nationwide average price fell less than 1% from a year ago.  But it was off by 1.4% over just the past three months.  Some housing markets dropped more than others.  Austin, Texas was down 10%.  Denver was down 5% with Tampa and Houston not far behind.  Cities where prices are still rising include Cleveland – up 6%, Chicago and New York both up 5%.  And Philadelphia up 3%.  Inventory is still historically low, but not at record lows.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/11/us-home-prices-negative.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Pala Alto-based EV manufacturer Rivian today announced new AI tech, an in-house chip and ambitions to enter the robotaxi field.  The advances will enable sophisticated new self-driving features.  New AI models will power Rivian’s Automony+ subscription service, which it intends to roll out early next year.  It’ll cost $2.500 up front or $50 a month.  By comparison, Tesla’s premium FSD (supervised) program costs $8k up front or $99 per month.  Rivian says there will soon be a software update to Autonomy+ that will allow “Universal Hands-Free” driving on the majority of marked roads in the U.S.  Unlike Tesla, Rivian will use lidar, or light detection and ranging systems as well as radar.  By SAE standard definitions, Rivians will have the same “level 4” capabilities as Waymo, the current robotaxi leader in the U.S. – meaning Rivian will be positioned to enter the robotaxi field. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/11/rivian-autonomy-ai-day.html

AI itself had been the odds-on favorite to be name Time magazine’s 2025 Person of the Year. But at today’s announcement, it turns out the distinction is being shared by a bunch of people, who the publication refers to as the “Architects of AI”.  Holy Matrix … The Architect?  Really?  According to the editors, “2025 was the year when artificial intelligence’s full potential roared into view, and when it became clear that there will be no turning back.  For delivering the age of thinking machines, for wowing and worrying humanity, for transforming the present and transcending the possible, the Architects of AI are Time’s 2025 Person of the Year.”  On the cover are the likenesses of Mark Zuckerberg from Meta, Lisa Su from Advanced Micro Devices, Elon Musk from xAI, Jensen Huang from Nvidia, Sam Altman from Open AI, Demis Hassabis from DeepMind Technologies, Dario Amodei from Anthropic, and Fei-Fei Li from Stanford’s Human-Centered AI Institute. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/article/times-2025-person-of-the-year-the-architects-of-ai-172342364.html
